“Great week in the Sun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

Went to P.R. for a week to celebrate my birthday. This property was larger than the others that we've stayed at in P.R. It had a really nice pool and beach. The staff were excellent. It was totally relaxing and stressless. It was the first week I spent without my cell phone in 20 years and would do it again in a second. This was a week to remember.

Room Tip: Stay in the main building. IT's closest to the pools and beach.

Booked this hotel as part of a last minute vacation in search of sun and warmth. I was not disappointed. The facilities and grounds are very nice. Probably more family oriented than I would generally look for, but for a long weekend it worked for me. Conveniently located between Old San Juan and the Condado Beach area, it was about a 20 minute walk to each.

The Caribe Hilton is a great place to stay in San Juan. It is located in the Condado section of San Juan, and very close to great restaurants and shopping. The hotel has a great beach and pool, and is good for families as well as single travelers. My only issue is that it is quite pricey.

We checked in at 10:00 am, right after off our cruise ship, and our room was already ready! The atmosphere was very relaxed and the staff was pleasant. It was tremendously windy our first day, but the temperature was in the high 70's. The pool was a little nippy with the wind. There is an abundance of restaurants and eateries right on site. The Pina Colada Club lives up to its name with the BEST Pina Coladas! There is also a Morton's Steak House. Yummy, but VERY overpriced.

The garden courtyard is lovely. The variety of animals is amazing. They had a pond with huge fish as well as peacocks, swans, a turkey, chickens, ducks, iguanas and lizards to be seen. The rooms had a very nice view of the water (once you overlook the rooftop). The beds are EXTREMELY comfortable! We were able to walk to Old San Juan for some sightseeing!

We recently stayed at this property for 2 nights; April 12 - 14, they only thing I could say is that Paris Hilton should stay there herself. The best word to describe this property would be "Dirty" The bar chandelier had dust balls hanging from it "YUK", the carpeting in the bedroom should have been replace. The best feature of this hotel was the pool and beach area, staff was pleasant and accommodating but definitely not like other Hilton's I have stayed at before. Fortunately this was not a week long vacation as we went on a cruise that Sunday. At the end of our cruise we ended up staying at the Marriott Stellaris boy what a difference, impeccable. We booked the Caribe Hilton because the Marriott was sold out, but will never stay there again. At the same rate as the Marriott GO MARRIOTT, food was equally as expensive at both locations but the Marriott was far superior and CLEAN!

Room Tip: GO Marriott!!!!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for a company trip last week and found the hotel to be great place to relax. The drinks are really expensive and the service is slow so make a trip to the liquor store close by if you plan on drinking a lot. A Rum and Coke was $11. The location is beautiful. If you want to sit by the pool there are plenty of seats, if you want to sit by the ocean they have plenty of places in a cool little cove area. We had an oceanfront room in the Main Tower that was nice to wake up to every morning, The room we were in did need some updating though. My wife and I also enjoyed walking through the Garden Wing everyday. They had a ton of wildlife in there to watch.

As for food, we ate at Morton's 3 out of the 5 nights we were there and the food was great. All in all it was a good trip, I would stay there again if I got one of the recently updated rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for an updated room in the main tower.

My take is that this is a very old hotel and while a tremendous amount of money has been put into updating it - particularly in the public areas, there is much still left to be done.

PROS
- Front desk did a great job of accommodating our need to change from a king room to a room with two doubles
- Staff is very friendly
- Gorgeous initial presentation (entrance, lobby area, shops, etc)
- Pool, beach and cove were amazing! Be sure to check the activity board every day for special events, free equipment hours, etc. Also keep an eye out for iguanas roaming the property - very cool!
- Really nice job updating the bathrooms. Loved the huge walk-in shower with double shower heads
- Free basic wifi for Hilton Honors guests

CONS
- Room was small, damp and musty. While some things have been updated, the carpet needed it the most
- Mattresses were very uncomfortable and probably in need of being replaced. No flat sheet on the beds which meant you were sleeping with the "public" comforter right on you. In fairness, I wanted to ask whether the swap them out after every guest but never saw a house keeping person to ask
- Very uncharacteristic of a high end Hilton, there were bad bulbs on our floor at the elevators, a bulb was missing from the headboard reading light, room safe (an important plus) had to be reset by security. The latter two were fixed quickly with a simple call.
- There is a 16% "Resort Fee" each day. I booked through a conference registration so I did not see this (or missed it). I'm not sure I understand why it is a percentage of your room rate rather than a fixed rate. And if I am there on business, I have very little time to take advantage of the amenities which I am paying a fee for.
- There is also a small bellman and housekeeping fee added onto the bill. Wont break the bank but something to be aware of.
- The conference/expo room was horrific - dark, damp, smelled from mold and mildew. Sit too long on the fabric cushioned chairs and your bottom got damp.
- Nothing to really walk to from the hotel (especially at night). Most everything is a cab ride away. BE SURE TO ASK THE HOTEL STAFF WHAT THE FARE SHOULD BE PRIOR - we found a great deal of inconsistency in cab rates and never knew for sure what was true or if we were being ripped off by the driver.
- Very nice, high-end restaurants on site but also VERY pricey. You'll find a very reasonable breakfast alternative at the base of the hotel driveway - Subway, of all things. They make fresh to order breakfast omelet sandwiches for only $3!

Room Tip: Water view is amazing!
