“Beautiful and absolutely worth the cost.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012 via mobile

It's a beautiful (although certainly not new) property. There are ammenities for the whole family and it's very close to popular sightseeing locations. No taxi I took cost more than $15. The staff suggested great restaurants and activities. Interestingly, a tropical storm arrived while I was there and the staff kept us informed and assured they were prepared. I would absolutely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Hilton Caribe after a cruise. We arrived very early and our room was not ready. Even though we booked through priceline staff were very helpful and found us a room that was ready and even upgraded up to oceanview with king instead of 2 double beds. The hotel is very beautiful and has plenty of areas to relax at the pool or beach. The only downfalls were that we found the food and drinks to be very expensive so we decided to spend the extra money on a taxi to eat outside the hotel. Also, the hotel is not in Old San Juan so you will need to take a taxi to go pretty much anywhere (expect the subway across the street). Thanks HIlton for a great end to our vacation!!

We just returned from a 4 night stay at this lovely resort, and I have to rank this vacation among our top five ever, largely because of our experience at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan.

I'd read many of the reviews before we got there, good and bad, but kept an open mind. The only action I took in response to the bad reviews was to request a renovated room upon checking in, and the woman who checked us in changed our original room assignment to accommodate our request without any fuss. Our room was clean, attractive, nice-sized and had a view of the old fort just east of the property. The bed was amazingly comfortable, with a fresh white duvet every day. The bathroom had plenty of big fluffy towels and high end toiletries on the marble counter.

The property itself is quite beautiful. You enter into a spacious open-air lobby with plenty of comfortable seating areas. There's a really pretty tropical garden in the center of the resort featuring a big koi pond. The garden space is also home to swans, peacocks and a family of turkeys. A walk through the garden leads you to the Lemon Grass restaurant with its covered outdoor dining patio and fabulous pan-Asian menu. There's free wi-fi in the lobby, and it was kind of funny to see people sitting everywhere, spending their vacation engaged with their iPads, mobile phones and laptops.

We loved the private beach, with its abundance of lounges and umbrellas. The water was clear and warm with gentle waves that are buffered by a breakwater to keep the surf from getting rough. We rented snorkle equipment one afternoon and were able to see all kinds of interesting tropical fish right inside the breakwater. There's also a circular sundeck jutting out over the water, a couple of floating platforms you can swim to, and an area between the pools and the beach with hammocks strung between the palm trees. We didn't use the pools because we prefer the beach, but they looked pretty and clean and had multiple levels and a swim-up bar.

The restaurants were priced a little on the high side, but were no more expensive than going out for a nice dinner anywhere, and there were a number of choices. If you want cheap eats, you can grab breakfast, lunch or a snack at the Starbucks, and there's a happy hour menu at the lobby bar with a few tasty plates between $3 and $7.

We'd never been to San Juan before, and found it to be a great place to visit. Old San Juan has plenty of shops and museums and little parks and restaurants of every description. It's a very pretty place just to stroll around. The Hilton is an easy walk across a bridge to the Condado area that has many more shops and restaurants, with every cuisine imaginable including Asian, Tapas, Peruvian and traditional Puerto Rican food (and for the less adventurous there's a Denny's, a Chili's, and an Outback Steakhouse, Subways, Baskin Robbins and Coldstone Creamery).

We found the Caribe Hilton well maintained, with friendly, helpful, competent staff. It was busy, but didn't felt crowded. We got an excellent price through cheapcaribbean.com, so for us it was an incredible value. I never wanted to leave, and would return in a heartbeat.

We stayed at the Caribe Hilton for three nights. The hotel is beautiful with the lobby overlooking the pool and ocean. Our room was in the renovated part, main tower, and it was beautiful and clean. Our small balcony overlooked the front entrance and lagoon. Big swimming pool with areas for children as well as adults. No lifeguard on duty. Inviting area with hammocks under the palm trees overlooking the swimming beach and ocean. Nice garden area with gazebo, pond, koi, turkeys, and one small rooster (didn't hear him making any noise). Very expensive food at the restaurants ranging from $17-22 for pasta up to $40 for meat or seafood. There is a Starbucks in the lobby that offers fruit, yogurt, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches ($6.00) that is open early until 10 pm. There is a Subway one block away. Forget buying drinks here. $16 for a drink at the bar. We bought our own rum and coke and had drinks for four days which cost us $8.00. Daily parking rate is about $16 and don't forget the daily resort fee. Good service except for checking in which made us wait four hours to get our room which was very frustrating.

You can walk to the Condado area where there is a lot to do and many restaurants. The walk is about ten minutes. We didn't walk there, but it seemed longer. Traffic in Condado is very busy. It's easier to get around by walking than driving.

It was a bit of a challenge to find an affordable connecting two bedroom option on the beach with lots to do and a convenient location, but the Caribe Hilton fit the bill! We were in the garden area, 5th floor, with two rooms with ocean views overlooking the garden - every night we heard the coqui (frogs) serenade us to sleep, every morning the peacocks and rooster would wake us up. While the girls slept in, hubby and I enjoyed coffee on the balcony (coffeepot in room) and the sunrise. Here we spent time at the pool, swimming and snorkling ($) in the lagoon, the girls did Snuba ($$) there with a certified guide and saw a ton of fish - they offer this right at the hotel, so we could see where they were, though they were 17 feet down at times - feeding the fish at the end of the dock (in the am, they had old bread/bagels at the towel stand), hanging out in a hammock, sitting by the ocean reading - all so very relaxing. they also had a nice fitness area, a basketball court, a putting green, volleyball, a giant outdoor chess set, a small playground - all very family friendly. The pool service staff were fantastic - very attentive, very nice. While in the 90's & humid, we loved the ocean breezes and We enjoyed several of the restaurant selections including the hotel restaurant and the italian restaurant for breakfast (though the hotel restaurant had much better service and friendlier staff), try Happy Hour at Morton's (we did so twice!) for great food/drink options and the girls loved Starbuck's. The location was great for hopping on a bus and 5 minutes later we were in Old San Juan. We were also able to rent a Jeep (Michael at Hertz is the best!!) right from the hotel to go to the rain forest. What kept this from a top rating was the concierge service (I had sent no less than 5 emails to the Eric whose email I was given and NEVER received a reply - made me a bit nervous before the trip to get such poor service), finally Giselle tried to answer as many of the questions as she could and then tried to get Eric to respond (still nothing) and when we arrived at the hotel, a couple of the concierge staff handed us phone numbers (one, she gave us was not even the full number) instead of calling for us - just not what I am used to (I typically book via Marriott's and never have this type of issue). We did have one excellent concierge who called a restaurant and booked a table for us which was greatly appreciated. And, the rooms were tidied every day, just not completely vacuumed.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the ocean - well worth it!

We stayed in Caribe Hilton 1 night. The room was very average in old pard of the hotel. We stayed there 2 years ago and had room in the newer part on higher floor and the views were amazing. This time room was on lower level just above roof and balcony was very overlooked.
Swimming pool was very inviting even we weren't able to use it because of time isue.
For 1 night stay it's ok but I would't want to stay longer than that in the room we had this time.
I though that location of this hotel was pretty good. We managed to see old town which is only short drive by taxi.

Room Tip: Choose rooms in new part of the hotel on higher lewel

I have to admit, I am spoiled now! They upgraded my daughter and myself to a 20th floor suite that was amazing! Aside from the amazing suite, the rest of the facility was great. The pools, the beach, the restaurants, etc. All were very well done!
