“Nice all around stay in San Juan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

My husband and I just returned from a six day stay at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the location is perfect--only 2 miles from old, historic San Juan, the private beach is sandy and perfect for everyone's enjoyment-young and old!! The facility also boasts a tropical wildlife garden, two large pools, a jacuzzi, a couple of seperate children's pools, and great ocean location. The hotel has a variety of restaurants including a Starbucks. There are also a few shopping boutiques on the premises. Our first king size bedroom was very nice with a large marbled double sink bathroom and walk-in shower, but we were nicely accommodated when we asked for another room with an ocean view-although we sacrificed the larger bathroom for it. The only drawback of our stay was the fact that both our rooms in the two separate buildings needed some updating. We recommend the Caribe Hilton in San Juan and would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Great amenities and beach to enjoy. Old San Juan is historical and picturesque with lots to explore...

Just came back from a week stay at Caribe Hilton. The resort is beautiful but like other reviews said the service is terrible. At least I knew what to expect. The checkin process took 45 minutes and of course it was 4:30 and room was not ready. Once we got the room, I asked for room in new tower, I was nicely pleased with a gorgeous room. Food was super expensive, so were the drinks so we had our meals outside the hotel and bought rum and beer and stocked our cooler which we would bring to the beach (allowed). All in all beautiful resort but the service is bad, why stay here when there are sooo many other hotels to pick from.

Room Tip: Ask for the new wing.

Our room was at the very end of a very musky, dingy hallway. And the musky, dinginess carried on into our room. The smell in the bathroom, although it appeared to be clean, was quite unpleasant. The AC vent/door was open. And we could see it hadn't been clean in a very long time. There was a thick layer of dust on the filter. I know its an old property. But it doesn't have to be dirty. The pros of this hotel were the beautiful ocean view. The pool area was very nice. With a wide variety of seating, sunning, lounging areas and the hammocks all made for a relaxing time out doors. The staff were curteus and friendly. Old San Juan is beautiful. With the buildings restore to their original state. It has nice restaurants, shops and the old castle was just amazing!
All in all, we would definitely go back to San Juan. We just wouldn't stay at the Caribe Hilton. again.

Room Tip: Keep in mind the age of this hotel when booking your trip.

My Husband & I stayed here and the resort is lovely. The beach area, pools, hot tubs, are all lovely. It is in a nicer area than some of the casino resorts, (walk to the left on the main road and it gets pretty scary!), but it is a long potentially dangerous walk even to the right, on your way to Old San Juan (which is nice but you'll want to take a taxi for certain at night). The Caribe Hilton had a steakhouse and a cafe/bar downstairs , and a plate of chicken fingers cost $17 before tip & taxes, no side items. You sort of have to decide between paying exorbitant resort prices for food, eating at Subway (the only choice within a mile I would say), our taking a taxi which is going to cost $10 each way to about any restaurant in Old San Juan. We took taxis often but it does get expensive, especially coming and going more than once so you can sightsee early, relax a while, and have dinner in the evening. It would have been wise for us to rent a car, but the other drivers there seem to all have road rage, and the police are EVERYWHERE. Not a bad thing necessarily, but they are. Also there are so many homeless, that was really sad. So expect to be bummed especially in Old San Juan. We enjoyed our stay, and most people speak English, but stop signs are in Spanish and nearly everything at the aeropuerto is also in Spanish, but we didn't have much trouble with that. You don't need a translation book. Order Pizza one night and save the $20 taxi trip, while you enjoy the resort. We meant to dine at the steakhouse, but it was too hot to dress up & very humid every day. We packed dresses and a tux for nothing! Rooms were nice but plain, the resort is very lovely however. I would stay again, & id spend more time lying on the resort and less time in a taxi!

Beautiful facilities (beach, pool, garden area, etc.) and very family friendly. Nice open areas, Oasis bar, lovely Olas spa staff. It was busy all around but very relaxed and never felt crowded. The hotel personnel was very friendly and knowledgeable. Our only complaint was that the hotel room, while very comfortable with amazing ocean and fort view, could have been cleaner. We found an eaten cracker by the curtain and the bathroom mirrors/wall by sinks could have been wiped down but we just did it ourselves. Otherwise room and amenities were great. The Tower area is under construction so ropes were banging against the wall for a while at night and noisy work began at 8am on weekdays. It didn't bother us but it could be annoying to others. The hotel facilities were fantastic and we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Tower building has wonderful ocean and fort views but may still be under construction.

If you want a beautiful beach vacations in a nice area with good location, this is the place. The Caribe Hilton is one of the oldest hotel in San Juan. The grounds are beautiful. It is the only hotel in San Juan with its own private beach. The private beach has his own seawall is in a lagoon area, so peacefully and perfect to swim without the large waves of other near beaches and without currents, really safe for teens and kids. The pools are nice and have a poll bar. There are chairs available and places around the grounds to place them. The hammocks are wonderful and a nice touch, that invite to sleep and read a good book. Has a nice well equipped GYM.

The on-property restaurants are expensive but near in the corner you have a subway. In Condado Area and San Juan you have every fast foob and differents type of restaurants that you want. From Sizzlers, Chilis, Wendys to high prices. The Morton's Bar have their Power Hour specials (5-6:30pm, and 9-11pm). They have $6 and $7 "bar bites" like mini filet mignon sandwiches, cheeseburgers, tuna tacos, etc. In the Lobby of the hotel you will find from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. "bar bites specials" Great food and most reasonable prices you'll find.

If its a special occasion my suggestion is to go to - Morton's Restaurant is expensive but with really excellent food and services, if you have the money don't miss this place for a succulent and tender steaks. The scallops with bacon entry is a plus and the Porterhouse is a really good one selection.

The breakfast buffet at Palmeras Restaurant at $25.00, is good, excellent service good omelets, eggs and bacon, pancakes and Oatmeal, pastry, fruits, juice and strong coffee.but need a chesse and hams station.

The staff at the Caribe Hilton was very professional and helpful during our stay. Any requests we had were taken care of immediately. A lot of security guys in the area that i have not seen in other hotels in Puerto Rico.

My room was 649, nice they were large with renovated good bathrooms, and comfort beds with nice pillows y have problems with the air conditioning system don't go below 69 Fahrenheit, I will like 66., Their check-in is at 4pm. Don't expect to get into your room any sooner than that. But you can arrive early they take care of the baggage and have dress rooms that you can change and star enjoin the polls and the beach. Overall, still a 4-star experience. Conveniently located, very helpful staff, gorgeous views, convenient amenities. I wish to return next year...

Room Tip: In rooms search for Ocean view above 8 floor.

The Caribe Hilton is the second oldest hotel in San Juan. Originally built by the Puerto Rican government in the 1950s, Hilton took it over when the government realized it wasn't in the hotel management business. The grounds are beautiful...I was told by a local that it is the only hotel in San Juan with its own private beach. The private beach is part of a lagoon area, so perfect to swim without worrying about undertows, large waves, etc. The pools are nice (although a little crowded). There are a TON of chairs available and places around the grounds to place them...from the very active pool area to some secluded areas where you feel like you're away from it all.

The on-property restaurants are expensive (but comparable with what we found in Old San Juan). My suggestion is to go to the Morton's Bar for their Power Hour specials (5-6:30pm, and 9-11pm). They have $6 and $7 "bar bites" like mini filet mignon sandwiches, cheeseburgers, tuna tacos, etc. Great food and most reasonable prices you'll find.

The rooms in the tower area where we stayed were a little disappointing. They were large with rennovated bathrooms, and a GREAT view, but the rooms themsleves were not what I would consider up to Hilton 4-star standards. Carpet was in desperate need of replacement/updating, and there were some minor other areas where the wood desk was damaged, cracked ceiling, etc. The rooms are 60+ years old...and don't look THAT bad, but not as nice as I expected. Clean, but needed updating. On the other hand, the view was gorgeous and helped us forget some of the negatives inside the room. And the overall area was quiet.

Other negative was the lack of wireless in the hotel rooms. I was surprised at that as well.

Also, as others have pointed out, their check-in is at 4pm. Don't expect to get into your room any sooner than that.

Overall, still a 4-star experience. Conveniently located, very helpful staff, gorgeous views, convenient amenities, etc. Room quality was only thing lacking...and you shouldn't be spending that much time in the room.

Room Tip: Tower areas have better views and are quieter, but rooms need updating. Main building has updated r...
