“Quick trips to P.R with the ladies!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Never been to P.R and the ladies and I decided to vacation there for a quick 3 day get-a-way---and that is exactly what this hotel is----get-a-way from the work life!!! highly recommend this hotel...(1) My favorite part---private beach/pools/pool bar--wow! There are tons of beach beds that you can find everywhere to all sun worshippers. Pools are awesome but they have an amazing pool bar with the very best frozen mango mojito i have ever tasted---must have!!!! Towels are provided, the sand is soft and friendly for adults/kids and there are fish swimming in the beach water which is very cool. They even had beach hammocks under the palm trees which was so relaxing while you hid from the sun and felt the cool breeze on your skin. (2) Room was a slight issue as the a/c was leaking water on the carpet but the staff was amazing and moved us along with our luggage into an upgraded room----thank you! The room had a very big bathroom with double sinks, huuuuuge shower with tiled seating, and rain like shower head. They had these free mini amazing products for shampoo/conditioner/soaps which we ordered each day as we loved them!!! Beds were super comfy feather like, we had the balcony room which had an amazing view, and the place was clean. No complaints on the room at all. (3) The food in the hotel was great---we had the breakfest in the outdoor patio near the pool but opted for ordering on their menu as we are not buffet people. The breakfast was great! appx $15-20pp. However in the lobby of the hotel there was a starbucks for all those who need their coffee lol. The lobby was awesome by the way---stores galore and a small parrot cage!!!! Although they have restaurants in the hotel such as morton's we wanted authentic puerto rican food so we ventured to old san juan for food. We heard about walking/busses---we just opted for taxi's...about $12-15 each way which adds up but it was the fastest/safest way. YOU MUST HAVE MOFONGO at Mojito's---OMG we went there 3x during our 3 day vacation lol. Amazing plantains baked with either pork, seafood or chicken. We also walked around old san juan as they have tons of shops.
**** Overall i will return to this hotel and recommend everyone----and possibly will consider my future "beach wedding" at this location. While on the beach we saw about 6 weddings, they were beautiful. They even have a beautiful venue in the hotel for weddings which i wanted to crash just because the music playing was great. The hotel lobby had great music too--karaoke night which i was shocked at the amazing talent singing that night. I read everyone's complaint on the prices of food/drinks----and i guess since we are from NY--they felt the same. $10 drinks, $30 cheap wine bottles, but you are on vacation---who cares and just enjoy yourself at this hilton!!!!
** oh yea my only complaint came from my sister---she went to the spa and the a/c broke and had the door open which meant a noisy massage while she sweat. not fun.

Room Tip: the higher the floor the better the view!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

I just stayed with my girlfriend July 5th-9th, short break, first time to Puerto Rico. Wishing rather we did stay elsewhere...

The pics shown online are spot on, impressive building, great ocean front views, pools, palm trees, huge main lobby, great exercise facility, nice little beach for guests only, but everywhere you look the place is old, worn, dirty and tired. I felt the whole time this place was stuck in the 60's, you know where my parents played when they were twenty somethings. We upgraded to Honors before arriving and requested a room up high and landed on the 15th floor, we didn't see the horribles this place has to offer and am greatful. We like to travel and unfortunately have stayed in worse, but with no name and paying a lot less.

The room was dirty and old, crooked and worn furniture, sliding glass door had some drywall screws screwed into the door frame with a pin lock thing, smelled mildewey, closet handles loose, clothes drawers loose and didn't close properly, luggage stand was broken but worked, TV was messed up but worked better when warmed up, the carpet was damp and never dried- suspected A/C drain leak, shower leaked, no accessible power outlets except near coffee maker, but the A/C worked, the hot water was quick, the beds were comfortable, we slept well, but the rest of the place was dated and tired and in need of a lot of work. The photos online of the property and surroundings are correct, but our view of the communicatin array was sad too, please install a screen. And don't expect the doorman to open a door for you, don't expect anyone to do anything except exactly what you tell them to, actually expect a mild rudeness no matter how much you smile, express courtesy and greet people, with exception for the front desk whom can't do anything to make things better, the consierge who told us about the two good restaurants across the street, Marmalade restaurant, local tours and trips, the lobby greeters who asked us where we were going and directed us by taxis directly yto what and where everytime and whomever is handing you something in hopes for a tip. Have no idea about the first drinks on the house, we paid $15 a piece for them. It wouldn't have been so bad if the overall feeling was not that 'you are not welcome here, you are stranded and you are going to pay, take a taxi or get nothing', so we paid, got smart quick and adjusted.

The Il Giardino is a total rip off for breakfast, $16 a piece for a couple sausage links, scrambled eggs and buffet style continental breakfast, The Atlantico was also a rip off with $12 mixed drinks and $7 Medallas just get a 750mL bottle Bacardi rum for $17 at the local shops or Medalla 12 pack for $10.50 at CVS, don't sit in the poolside bar either, there is mold and filth that hasn't been cleaned in some time all over the counter and all over the edges of the pool and water clarity is cloudy at best and is probably full of bacteria.

It's dirty, worn and dated. but it was only $1200 for five days/four nights, plus round trip airfare Jet Blue out of Orlando. Consider also for $30/day taxi to Old San Juan and the $25 trip to and from the airport, yes you HAVE to taxi, they have no shuttle and nothing is within 'walking distance'. Strongly suggest you get the taxi ride in to stop for bottled water too, they go for $2.50 each here as if it has some deeper nutritional value.
I do recommend Native Sauce around the corner for a great meal and the Sandwich Shop across the street, no not the 'sewage reeking' Subway.

Actually skip this place all together, it's dirty, worn and dated!
It needs a lot of work.
As I write this I am reminded the place next door is abandoned, there is trash blowing around everywhere, everything smells like a dumpster, urine or a backed up sewage! Thank God there is a non stop tropical breeze off of the ocean or this place would be a ghost town, skip it, that is unless you only spend your time in a bed and the balcony only and get the heck out of there as soon as you wake and you pay less than we did, a lot less.

We've been to many places and know better than complaining, if things are that way blame the management and complaining will not help or fix anything, so cheer up, you made it to Puerto Rico, the land is beautiful, the food is great, enjoy your stay!

Very nice hotel, but 1 hotdog and 2 sodas for $20 is bit too much for me. If money isn't an object then you'll love this place. But for the average joe, it's not the place for you. Also not much around the hotel. Denny's is about a 10 min walk and old San Juan is about a 40 min walk. The bus transportation is unreliable, make sure you have exact change (.75) and if you see the bus you want make sure you wave it down or else it will just pass you by. We were on our honeymoon which one of the staff members said he would note that in our record, I don't know why though it's not like they did anything for us or even say congratulations. We were supposed to get 2 welcome drinks per registered guest, well apparently I didn't have my husband on the reservation so we only got 2 drinks for free instead of 4. I even told em we were on our honeymoon when we were checking out, and the lady at check out said she would take care of the drinks for us...well she still only gave us 2 free drinks not 4. So if you get the rate that offers welcome drinks make sure you have everyone registered.

My wife and I stayed here from July 6th through the 9th with nine other friends. The first room (#626) was very clean with a comfortable bed and was one of the "renovated" rooms. However, we were right across from the soda and ice machines, two service elevators and the two regular elevators. We had to change rooms after the first night as the noise of the elevators going up and down was very annoying and very frequent, and sounded just like a car driving over a metal drawbridge. The front desk staff were very friendly and allowed us to view a room that had not been renovated yet, and as it was clean we took it. No other complaints about the rooms. We found nearly all of the hotel staff were friendly, especially the front desk. However, the pool bar and the wait staff at the pool were extremely slow. My wife and her friend waited 20 minutes before a bartender finally took their order at the pool bar, and another friend waited 45 minutes for her drink to be delivered by the wait staff in the pool area. If you try to sneak drinks into the pool area, be sure they are hidden as the staff will stop you and not let you in and then you will be asked to open your bag the next time! Granted, it was a very busy weekend but I did not feel bad taking our own drinks after the first day of poor drink serice. The drinks are not cheap at the hotel, Medalla Light was $8 per 10 ounce can and a small stoli vodka and soda was $12. The lobby and bar area were nice as well as the two pool areas. Snorkeling was pretty good in the lagoon to the west of the main pool. Our friends had a room in the tall tower on the 19th floor and the view toward the ocean and beach to the east was spectacular. We took cabs to Old San Juan and they were reasonably priced around $12-15 total for 7 of us. Took a van taxi to the El Yunque rain forest with 10 of us for $45 each, though we gave the driver a tip on top of that as he was our personal tour guide. We left the hotel at 11:30 and returned at about 7:30. The hotel wanted $80 per person, so we walked over to the cabs and started asking. The cabs must have a permit to enter the park, and many of them did not have it so be aware that many will say they can't take you. We started with a stop at a local bakery to have sandwiches made, then the rain forest, then a drive along the beach route where we stopped at a local street side barbeque (Kiosko Boriqua), then a stop at the grocery store to end the day. Call Martin Rivera Cruz at 787-398-6441 (prtransportation.com) or email at prparadise@yahoo.com and tell him the crazy group from Tampa recommended him. An EXCELLENT restaurant with great atmosphere is called El Livin, located in the Luis Munoz Rivera Park across from the stadium just west of the Normandie Hotel and upstairs in the concrete building (5 minute walk from hotel). The short ribs melted in our mouths as well as the ceviche. Tried the Perurrican Restaurant Condado on our last night, and all 11 of us were overwhelmed by the salt in the dishes! It was like drinking sea water. The patio atmosphere, the ceviche and the view over the beach were great however. You must visit the two main forts in Old San Juan and walk Old San Juan to see the history and beauty of the city. Would stay again at the Caribe Hilton, but would not pay more than the $220 per night, which included taxes.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms and a room in the tall tower. Do not get a room by the elevators.

We stayed here for 4 nights in July, 2012. Check-in went very smoothly and we were assigned rooms in the towers. There are only two elevators for the tower building, and there are lengthy lines at times; the doors shut fast so you have to be quick. Our rooms were OK, spacious, clean but were definitely showing their age. The views were great and it was very nice to have a mini refrigerator. It was fairly crowded, and late into the night/early morning you could hear the doors slamming up and down the hallway as people went into their rooms. The concierge was wonderful and set us up on some nice tours (half the price of online!) and the restaurant/bar service was great but pricey. I agree with an earlier review - go to a CVS or Walgreens (if you take a taxi to the pier in Old Town, there's one right there where they drop you off) to stock up on Food, Beer, Wine, Liquor. The liquor/food stores close to the hotel are very expensive and a little scary. There's a good sushi and localfood restaurant close to the Subway around the corner from the hotel. In Old Town, there's a free trolley that stops at several locations in town; highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Get a room somewhere other than in the towers.

The thing we liked the most about the hotel was the private beach. Service was good and the staff was very nice.

Things that could be much better:
When we got to the room the sheets didn't have a good smell.
The people that cleaned the pools in the morning didn't care much about the kids pool and I think that's one of the most important pools.
I would also recommend more security, due to the fact that there is a public beach near to the hotel and anyone could easily get in.

It is so incredible how the Caribe Hilton insulted my intelligence,i can not believe they are permited to advertise this place as a 4 star hotel, and the pictures from there website must have been taken in 1970...... Trust me i may seem a bit stuck up but the truth is i am a very down to earth person and tolerate many things, but after everything and i mean everthing going wrong at this place i have to tell the truth !!! ... Day 1 (2 rooms ) 1 in tower,1 garden view i decided to take the tower room for the ocen view WOW what a mistake, the pic was my view of the construction and many workers ,3 am i woke up the room was so hot i could not sleep but i stayed calm thought if i would open the door maybe i could feel the breeze, oops the door did not open.. ok so once again i tell myself stay calm ,at 7 :49 am BOOM ,BAM i jumped up look outside thinking somethin really bad was happening pepole where yelling that is when i put my shoes on called front desk (stupid me so concerned about everyone in the tower) when i tried to explain my concern I was told sorry for the inconvenience we are under construction.I was so confused that i did not even answer,8:30 am after the BOOM shock i called front desk to report that i had no air conditioner after 3 calls finally a young man came to my room and told me that i had the balcony door open and that was the problem ..... I was not as calm when i told him WHAT the door does not OPEN ,but he did not belive me until i insisted he open it himself ,once again sorry for the inconvenience, and 30 min. later my air conditioner was fixed an my door was opened ,that is when i saw more then 5 workers walking around (my ocean view),so the door and curtains stayed closed, well with 3 hr of sleep i whent to the infinity pool (also made in 1970 ) scary!!! Once again i kept calm did not look back and went to the beach, after walking around for 15 -20 min. looking for a chair I asked for help and was told in a minute ,Dont get me wrong they have many chairs, but they where already taken and the other ones where tied together, soooo after waitng and walking around like an idiot i just sat on my towel (never saw the young man again) or anyone else that could help .Finally i just gave up went to my daughters room and we left for dinner and a ride arond town 11 pm got back very tired !!! long bad day !!!.... 4 am my cell rings ,my daughter her air conditioner was not working and she had called front desk 3 times (she was with her 4 year old son ) 4:30am she has to go to the front desk and once again ... sorry ...... as u can tell i have not even mentioned the condition of the rooms ,That is another book!!!!..well after the first 48 hr we decided that we would spend the rest of r hellcation walking around old SJ ...Finally we are leaving july 9, 2012 and that is when i get a bill for over $200.00 for the Bar and Restaurant ....... unbelievable ,yes i called front desk told them it is a mistake i did not use any amenities at the hellhole (yes i am very upset ) after waiting for a phone call for almost 1 hr (7:12am) i went to front desk and guess what ..... sorry ,but they still had not fixed the problem at 11am 4 hr later that was resolved ,but know I am being charged over $500.00 for parking (4 days) we where informed our checkout invoice did not say we were GUEST !!!! .... OMG i can not wright what i wanted to do at that point ,but i will say everything i have wrote is the truth and once again,i am a very down to earth person have traveled to many places, learned many cultures and this is the first time i have been in complete shock of how deceiving The SJ Caribe Hilton Website is !!!!........
