“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012 via mobile

Stayed at the Caribe Hilton after a cruise and wish we would have stayed longer. The grounds and facility is great and the view of the ocean with the breeze was awesome.
We will come back

If you want to save $ on drinks, walk 10 steps across street and get your beer/wine/rum at one of the little stores on the street. Hotel drinks are very $$$!

Where to start?
-Well, like most Caribbean hotels, we get there before check-in so we wait for 4 hours. We are supposed to have an Ocean View room but they don't have one as they are over-booked for New Years. That's fine. We have a lagoon view and figure we won't be in the room that much to care about the view -- but I was still mad that our trip that we booked through sold us an Ocean Room.

-The next morning we awake to drilling and hammering and loud Spanish conversation coming from across the hall. They are fixing a shower at 8 am with the door open and people coming and going.

-We get up to leave and I walk out in flip-flops only to have stepped on a dirty unwound hanger used for God only knows what?? It punctured my toe to the point that there was no stopping the blood so back to my room I went. The workmen across the hall saw this and called for "security"; a security guard that carries a medical bag. After stopping the blood and certifying that we weren't going to force a lawsuit I just wanted to get out in the sun.

-If you have children this is the playground for you. Everything you can imagine is here for screaming loud kids that like to run and jump and scream all day. It was hard to find a "grown up place" where you couldn't hear children at decibel 10.

-Rude male bartender at the indoor lobby bar that would rather serve men then 2 women who had been patiently waiting for 5 minutes to get his attention.

Good things: it was in a good walking location to Old San Juan (30 minutes) and to the Condado area on the other side across the 3 Kings bridge for food/nightlife. It has a Morton's steak restaurant when you just want a great piece of meat or seafood and you can always rely on it. They do have a beach (small) and nice pool area. The people are very nice, the staff is great and the weather and safety value can't be beat. It's a great cultural, Caribbean experience that is a short trip away from home. If US AIR hadn't lost our luggage on the return flight this could've been your average "get away" to any place away from home...that never will be.
I'll be back to San Juan but I think I'll try another hotel next time.

Room Tip: We had a northeast view out to the lagoon on the 5th floor but we were right over the huge air-condi...

We recently stayed at both the Marriott and Caribe Hilton before and after a cruise, respectively. I will include the same review for both, since it seems appropriate for comparison purposes. The Marriott is closer to Condado and the central action therein. This includes restaurants, Walgreens, and Starbucks. The Hilton, on the other hand, is at the outer limits of Condado and requires a good walk to get to Old San Juan or the rest of Condado. This said, as a hotel/resort, the Caribe Hilton is head and shoulder above the Marriott. The latter is worn and dated, with the exception of the lobby. The casino at the Marriott is not particularly nice—more like a low-grade Vegas joint. The Hilton feels more like a tropical resort with it’s open-air lobby, large pools, developed beach area, and multitude of dining options. The Hilton does not have a casino. I truly believe that the Marriott is WAY over-priced for what it currently offers. The Hilton is closer to a reasonable value. The staff at both properties are only partially helpful. We found most of the service in San Juan to be mediocre at best this trip. People were very disinterested in helping visitors. That was disappointing overall. Late checkout was a challenge at both hotels—Hilton charged me $75 to leave one of our 2 rooms at 3 PM, yet the other room was not cleaned until 2:30 PM. It’s a game with them.

Be warned—if you are coming for New Year’s Eve, the Hilton hosts many parties and the restaurants are booked well-ahead. There is considerable hubbub from local residents attending the parties, so be prepared….it’s not really a family atmosphere.

we loved our week here and it was perfect for kids. Nice retro feel, not too many loud drunken or lecherous types in the lobby and bar area (drinks are too expensive for that). beautiful little garden area with peacocks nesting in the trees. Great beach, sand, pool (warning: no lifeguard in duty, and many unsupervised kids in pools). Close to old san juan which was nice. Good family vibe. Rooms are tired and it was LOUD, particularly on New Years' Eve. I'd definitely recommend eating out; breakfast is OK and the rest is kid food from what I can tell (to be honest we did go into town for dinner every night except one so I can't say anything about the in house restaurants. The Mortons on the property was very sub par, I must say)

The big downside was what I would call the sort of sloppy service all around. Rooms were a bit tired and they could have been cleaner, much cleaner, and this was because they weren't properly cleaned every day. There was no eye contact, no greeting, from front desk staff. The greeter at the breakfast place was very friendly but the other waiters did somehow make you feel like you were in their way and several times staff members ran around us on stairs. There do seem to be some management issues.

That said, this is a great family getaway and honestly the lack of genuine service orientation was a consistent issue with many places in San Juan. Perhaps that is the norm there, but somehow I doubt it. it doesn't seem to fit the vibe of the city. And if you go, expect to supervise your children in the pool and beach area because there are no lifeguards. That was fine for us because we went to spend time with them but many families might have differing expectations.

We stayed for 4 nights in 2 rooms with great views. Rooms were large, very clean and comfortable with good amenities. Can't beat the location and the small but very nice beach. Lots of good sunning areas and beach service for chairs, umbrellas, drinks and food was great. Hotel restaurants had very good food but were a bit expensive. Frank at Il Giardino goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. Starbucks on premises was very convenient. Some nice shops and just a quick inexpensive cab ride to Old San Juan. Overall, if you are not watching your budget, this was a great family hotel. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Would go back again.

There is no other property like the Caribe Hilton. It's private and beautiful. The staff was very helpful and service was excellent. Breakfast was good. Had the salmon with bagels, fresh OJ.

Dined at the Italian restaurant...IL Giardino...these people will make you feel at home. Food was great, service was SUPERB! Try the salmon with the sauce on the side. Even the pizza they got for my child was great.

Also went to Piña Colada Club...very nice place. Hubby watched Soccer game. Burger was huge! Really enjoyed the Piña Colada tasting hour by the pool. They even have a Starbucks on the lobby.

A few pointers...
1) We got 2 full beds for the 3 of us...1 bed really small for two adults. Both got back pain from this. Try 2 queens or 1 king and a cot.
2) They really need to take advice from other Hiltons for children freebies. Our son was very disappointed. The bucket and the Frisbee were nice, but no free t-shirt or pizza or ice cream or water rental. These go a loong way with children and with their parents too ;-).
3) The pool was freezing. All guests (except 3, including my polar bear kid) were in the hot tub or at the beach. I manage to put 1 leg in, but it was too cold!

Overall...this is a very nice property with excellent service and a superb location.

Room Tip: We got the Condado Lagoon view with the old fort they got in the property and the ocean too...pricel...
