First off, if the Trip Advisor reviews of the Gallery Inn are any indication, the travelers who write these reviews are extremely accurate in their descriptions of the their stays. This is especially surprising since the reviews of the Gallery Inn range from top of the line to the bottom of the heap. The strange part is that after reading all of the reviews on returning from our 4 nights at the Gallery Inn, I found myself acknowledging the truthfulness of each and every review.

If you are looking for something off beat and authentic, then the Gallery Inn is a wonderful place to stay. Putting aside the specifics of your room, everything else about the place (with the exception of the breakfast and wine and cheese hour) was exceptional. The inner and outer courtyards, the artwork, the views from the third and fourth floor balconies, just magnificent. You are provided with an experience that was unmatched. Where else can you climb to a roof top at night, the highest point in Old San Juan and enjoy a 360 view of the city and ocean, all while gazing at the stars. Our only disappointment was we never were able purchase dinner, bring it back to the Inn, and with a bottle of wine enjoy our own al fresco dining.

We are travelers that do not spend much time in our room except to sleep and wash up. Thus, a small cramped room is not an automatic downer for us, especially when there is so much other room in the Inn to sit and read. The shower was small but clean and the water pressure was fine. There was not room to spread out our cosmetics and shaving paraphernalia but again, we did not go to Old San Juan for that purpose. It was more important to us that the bed was comfortable and indeed it was.

The room was expensive but I did not find anything cheaper in Old San Juan. That being said, for the money spent I would have appreciated a better breakfast but the coffee was good, hot and strong so that makes up for many deficiencies. The wine and cheese hour was enjoyed by many but i would have appreciated knowing ahead of time that I would be charged $7.50 for a glass of wine.

The staff was very friendly, sometimes not immediately helpful, but always with a smile, especially if you treat them the same way. No matter how much you try, you will not be able to get the staff to provide you with an experience similar to what you would expect at a Hilton. If you are frustrated because everything did not work out perfectly, please remember that the staff is not responsible.

Although the Gallery Inn is extremely charming, and the lush patio in front is a delight, the service, with the exception of Jose, who was wonderful, was a disappointment. The owner is not very friendly, and her granddaughter, who works at the front desk, acts like she would definitely rather be somewhere else! We spent five nights there, traveled to Vieques, and returned for three more nights. We tried to cancel the last three nights, but would have had to pay for all nights according to their cancellation policy. Our room, called Hector B, the first five nights was small, but OK. Our room, called Amy, the last three nights was a disaster. There were ants crawling up the wall, the water stopped in the middle of a shower, and the construction on the pool next to the room started at 6:00 AM......very loud! We were charged the same rate as the first room, and when we asked for an adjustment, we were simply told, "no, it will be the same price as Hector B, $275.00 (even though the room was smaller, dirty, etc.)!! Breakfasts were also a huge disappointment. They served Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and cold rolls! I have to admit the girls who helped in the kitchen were very nice and sweet! Overall, the place has charm, but is far too expensive for what they have to offer. Annie

“Think twice before staying here”

The Gallery Inn

Feb 23, 2008

You should think twice about staying here. We checked in late and even though we booked a mid range room for $275.00 a night we were put into a room that should never have been let regardless of price.

It was called the Library Room and it had a bed with a sink, toliet and bath tube in one open area with a drap hanging from the ceiling. In addition the toliet was leaking on to the floor next to the bed and the tub had mold growing on the wooden surround. To make matters worse there was no hot water.

On night 2 and 3 they tried had to make up for this problem but did not do much better. The rooms in general are very small and worn. Also if you are having getting around this place is not for you.

While the Gallery Inn has a great location it proved to be the wrong choice.

My husband & I just returned from Puerto Rico and our stay at the Gallery Inn was exceptional. We had a wonderful ocean view room with our balcony overlooking the amazing garden and the ocean. The Gallery Inn is probably not for everyone, but if you're looking for something a little different (funky and artsy,) not your stock hotel room, I definitely recommend the Gallery Inn. Every evening guests gather in the living room for wine and cheese and crackers, and honestly, everyone always seemed to be having a great time. The staff goes above and beyond to make your stay a special one. The owners love entertaining and we absolutely loved their pets (they have the most beautiful, friendly, lovable exotic birds.) Jan Marie, always had the best recommendations for dinner (Barru was a hit.) Restaurants, shopping and exploring the city was all within walking distance. I just wanted to mention a few people by name because they were all extremely nice and helpful; Victor, Jose, Jan Marie, and Jan D'Esopo and Manuco. Thank you for an unforgettable visit!

The hotel offers amazing views from its rooftop (be ready to climb).
It is a dark and intense decor, very intense with all the paintings, sculptors, etc....
The owner's not the most friendly lady, even if she seems to try.
Her staff is amazing and very available.
We liked the bar: Help yourself in the hotel's fridge (in the lobby) and write down your room number and the drinks you took. They trust you!
If you are clostrophobic, stay away from the room called Secret Room. FREAKY! It is an hidden room ('secret'!!!) located behind a tiny wooden gate (that can be locked from the outside.... so basically anybody can lock you up!). Go through this gate, go down 3 stairs and here's your door. I didn't fit through the door and had to go sideways... It is very stylish, but also dark and only a small window looking into a tiny courtyard brings light inside the room.
After a strange first night the staff was nice enough to upgrade us to a beautiful room with a balcony and a great view.
So be ready to spend a little more and ask for a room with a view.
