First off, if the Trip Advisor reviews of the Gallery Inn are any indication, the travelers who write these reviews are extremely accurate in their descriptions of the their stays. This is especially surprising since the reviews of the Gallery Inn range from top of the line to the bottom of the heap. The strange part is that after reading all of the reviews on returning from our 4 nights at the Gallery Inn, I found myself acknowledging the truthfulness of each and every review.
If you are looking for something off beat and authentic, then the Gallery Inn is a wonderful place to stay. Putting aside the specifics of your room, everything else about the place (with the exception of the breakfast and wine and cheese hour) was exceptional. The inner and outer courtyards, the artwork, the views from the third and fourth floor balconies, just magnificent. You are provided with an experience that was unmatched. Where else can you climb to a roof top at night, the highest point in Old San Juan and enjoy a 360 view of the city and ocean, all while gazing at the stars. Our only disappointment was we never were able purchase dinner, bring it back to the Inn, and with a bottle of wine enjoy our own al fresco dining.
We are travelers that do not spend much time in our room except to sleep and wash up. Thus, a small cramped room is not an automatic downer for us, especially when there is so much other room in the Inn to sit and read. The shower was small but clean and the water pressure was fine. There was not room to spread out our cosmetics and shaving paraphernalia but again, we did not go to Old San Juan for that purpose. It was more important to us that the bed was comfortable and indeed it was.
The room was expensive but I did not find anything cheaper in Old San Juan. That being said, for the money spent I would have appreciated a better breakfast but the coffee was good, hot and strong so that makes up for many deficiencies. The wine and cheese hour was enjoyed by many but i would have appreciated knowing ahead of time that I would be charged $7.50 for a glass of wine.
The staff was very friendly, sometimes not immediately helpful, but always with a smile, especially if you treat them the same way. No matter how much you try, you will not be able to get the staff to provide you with an experience similar to what you would expect at a Hilton. If you are frustrated because everything did not work out perfectly, please remember that the staff is not responsible.
