“Recommend you stay at the Hotel El Convento”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2014

The Hotel El Convento is a beautiful old building in Old San Juan next to great food and excellent shopping opportunities. The staff will bend over backwards to assist you in any way they can. The food at the hotel is amazing and the wait staff is first rate. One waiter in particular, a guy named "Tony", by his own admission a weekend waiter, treated us like we were his best friends right from the start. He was so friendly that my wife even had to get her picture taken with him just to show people who she was talking about. We never missed a breakfast there just so we could enjoy his company. Thanks for everything Tony.

Most wonderful place we have ever stayed. It was magical and the staff were exceptional. They went out of their way to make us comfortable and ensure that all of our needs were met. The room was luxurious and so spacious. Food in the restaurants at the hotel was incredible. We can't wait to go back. Old San Juan was beautiful and very romantic-great destination for our twentieth anniversary.

This is absolutely the best place I've stayed off the mainland states. The staff was top notch with everything, the place was beautiful, and convenient to Old San Juan. I will be going there again with my wife, when it is cold and snowy in Philadelphia.

The location in Old San Juan was perfect for restaurants and sight seeing. They have a partnership with a hotel in Isla Verde so you can use that beach which is awesome (El Convento, itself, is not near any beaches). You need to provide your own transportation to get to the beach. The service is lightning quick and all the employees are so fun to talk to. The daily wine and cheese reception from 6-7 is fun. Its such a cultural hotel, and is not like your stereotypical hotel experience. I would highly recommend El Convento to anyone.

You would be foolish not to stay at the Hotel El Convento. We stayed there the first week of August. First of all, the hotel is absolutely beautiful. It's amazing the structure dates back to the 1600's. The rooms are updated but still have the old world charm. The rooms and entire hotel are very, very clean, housekeeping was extraordinary. All the staff is so friendly, you feel like your in your own neighborhood. They will do everything to make sure your stay is pleasant. Carolina Blanco was so helpful in suggesting great day trips and restaurants for us. We took her suggestions and went on some great trips and ate at awesome restaurants she suggested. Reuben was very nice, he talked to us every day and made sure everything was good with our stay. The hotel bellman was wonderful. When we arrived they immediately took our bags from the cab. They were very friendly every day when we would see them we would take time to chat. When we left to go back home, they immediately got our bags and took them to the car. The complimentary wine and cheese was unexpected and a welcome surprise. The quality of the cheese and wine was awesome. The complimentary water and fresh fruits was also refreshing and appreciated. When we arrived we went to the bar and Vanessa was our bartender. She was fantastic. Very friendly and made awesome drinks. The hotel itself is stunning. You can tell the staff wants your stay to be wonderful and without worry. I know this sounds to good to be true but believe me, the quality, service, friendliness and caring of everyone at the hotel was incredible, they went above and beyond to make for a very pleasant vacation. We felt very welcome and I don't think I have been in a more friendlier environment than at the El Convento while on vacation! Thank you all!

First off, this Hotel looks and feels every bit of Old San Juan. Incredibly charming and romantic.

This Hotel is much more than we had expected. Entire Hotel staff were all helpful, friendly, and professional. Our Room was located on 5th Floor, and it was clean and spacious. Just because the Hotel is of another time, don't think you are left without modern amenities. In fact, you will find standards such as Iron,Hair drier, in-room safe, as well as a fridge, flat panel TV, Bose speaker system for your devices. Modern Shower, and Free Wi-Fi throughout room. Our room had a beautiful view from the windows that had working shutters.

Our room had a foyer complete with love seat and chairs just before you entered room. The air conditioning was powerful and offered an oasis from a humid summer day. The rooms have original Spanish clay floors and the room as a whole itself feels majestic.

During our time here, we were plesantly surprised to learn that complementary bottled water was suppled to Hotel Guests who cared for it on the third floor 24/7. Also was very impressed with the complementary Wine, Cheese, and crackers available nightly at around 6PM. This was also on 3rd floor and was exclusively for Hotel guests. It made our stay even that more special. There are plenty of places to relax at the hotel.

You can visit Pool and hot tub on third floor, or simply sit by one of the many two seater tables lining the balcony walkways in front of the rooms. They have a pricey but tasty Bar/Restaurant on the premises, and This place is magical at night.

I fear I am completely spoiled by El Convento and have no desire to visit any of the other hotels here in Old San Juan on future visits. If El Convento is not available during my next trip to San Juan I may have to re-work my days until it is available. It is a very special place.

The Location of this hotel central and I found it quite easy to navigate back to no matter where I was in Old San Juan. OSJ is small. I find it akin to Florence, Italy as you can walk everywhere and see it all in a few days. El Convento was just perfect. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this Hotel.

While staying here I recommend shopping and dining up and down Calle San Francisco.

Bonus Breakfast tip: I tired a lot of recommended places while in OSJ, but here are my favorites for Breakfast: if you are on the run.... have a Majorca w/ Cafe con Leche at the Little green hut at the corner of a park at Calle San Jose & Calle San Francisco. The woman making the Majorca & Coffee treated my meal as a craft at a cost about $5. If you have time to relax and want an excellent tasting experience go to Cafecultura further down Calle San Fran.

El convent is a really nice boutique hotel with a great location in the heart of Old San Juan and is priced accordingly. If you book online you can sometimes find great rates, but the stay is well worth the rate you pay! One of the highlights is the nightly free wine and cheese reception. It is a great opportunity to meet the other guests and enjoy you good wine on the poolside terrace. There isn't any self parking available and we had some trouble finding the valet lot (it's not right in the front door, but just to the side). But the staff is very attending, incredibly friendly and willing to help you no matter what you need. The hotel has the feel of a romantic stay in the colonial Caribbean and the amenities are very modern. You also have free access to the beaches at two properties in Isla Verde and condado which I definitely recommend using. The location is also a good base point for exploring all sides of the island if you have a car. Great hotel experience and cozy romantic way to be a part of Old San Juan!

Room Tip: Higher floors have a better view and some rooms have a balcony, but all are fully furnished.
