“Absolutely Amazing Hotel in Old San Juan, PR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

This hotel was by far one of the best I have been to. There were some hiccups like the room was not ready until 4pm when it should've been by 3pm as well as our first room had a leak from the AC in the room but they accommodated well and moved us to another room.

The rooms in the hotel are BEAUTIFULLLL... I love culture so this was the perfect hotel to be in PR. You can control the heat and AC in all rooms, our balcony had a beautiful view of the ocean and the streets of PR where natives sat at night playing the guitar, drawing and more. It was so romantic and beautiful!

The wine and cheese is not what it's all cracked up to be unless you just enjoy some free Wine then yes, go ahead a brag. Not that many variety of cheeses (about 5 with one cracker style) but there were several different wines offered, this last from 6-7pm so if you want to enjoy a beautiful view and some free tasty wine get there early, the cheese finished quickly and the 6:30pm you can possibly miss out on some wine.

There is also an open center in the hotel where beautiful trees sprout out and creates a shade over the hotel's restaurant. There is a cool and hot jacuzzi for 24hr use where my boyfriend and I stayed every night. The streets were pretty dead late night like 2-3am so we finished our nights by the jacuzzi a lot. We brought our own bottle of Champagne and with tall glasses and watched the stars in the warm jacuzzi.

The food near the hotel was Amazing! I would highly recommend this place to everyone...

You don't need a car because to find parking is difficult and you can pretty much walk to everywhere you need. **** Ladies no need for heels because there are lots of hills and it will not be comfortable for you to walk in heels all day**** Even Beyonce wore flats... Feel free to take the Trolley it's FREE! (There are two, one that stays in Old San Juan while the other goes in the city), The bus is the next cheap option to travel with paying less than $1 otherwise taxi will work for farther trips.

I have stayed at El Convento four times over the last eight years. The beauty and elegance of Old San Juan is worth exploring for a couple of days and El Convento is the perfect "homebase". The hotel is truly charming with high ceilings, gorgeous architectural features, tilework, and art.

I love the complimentary wine bar every evening at 6pm that features wonderful Spanish wines, cheeses, and fresh fruit. It is held on the 3rd floor library patio and the views over the colorful old city are spectacular. The library also keeps complimentary cold bottled water, fresh coffee and tea, and fresh fruit regularly available. There are two computers with printers also in the library for guests to use. The courtyard is a lovely area for breakfast with potted fresh herbs (instead of cut flowers) at every table. There is a huge herb garden on the top patio that the hotel maintains for their kitchens which is worth exploring. There are lounge chairs there and it a wonderfully smelling secret hideaway.

If you have a car- driving in Old San Juan is challenging. The roads are narrow, corners are tight, the hills, horrible traffic, sudden stops, and random crossing wild cats add more fun. Parking is almost non-existent- but there is a lot directly across from the hotel that charges $20 per day. I prefer taking a taxi from the airport. The rates are regulated at ~ $24 to the hotel. Ask the taxi stand people at the airport in advance. There are always taxis waiting in front of the hotel so returning to the airport or traveling outside Old San Juan is never a problem.

There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and classic bars in the area to explore. One thing to note is many restaurants close early by 10pm... and don't open certain days of the week- mostly Mondays, so confirm times/ hours in advance. I have always appreciated the advice from the staff at the hotel. Last month someone from the front desk suggested Cafe Lolas a true "hole-in the wall" restaurant that we would have never considered. It was one of our favorite meals with amazing sauces and elegantly presented. It was a short taxi ride away but absolutely worth it.

The beautiful blue cobblestone streets are lovely to look at but hard to navigate in heels. I always bring comfortable flats or sandals to explore the city. It is easy to walk the entire Old Town peninsula in one day. Definitely see both of the Forts- El Morro has beautiful views and an informative museum.

Room Tip: The tops floors have beautiful views of the harbor but are smaller with "low" ceilings. Th...

Great Hotel, wonderful property at best location. Walk to Marmalade restaurant or Dragonfly restaurant. One block away from outlet store for Coach and DooneyBourke. Two blocks away from the Barrachina where you can sip on the best Pina Colada

We spent two nights at the El Convento from the 11th to the 13th of September. We purchased the Romantic Memories Of Old San Juan Package which included a Queen Deluxe room upgrade, Champagne, and Truffels. The room was under the roof so we had some nice (partial) view over the harbor but no high ceiling though. I guess the high-ceiling rooms are on the first and second floor.
We enjoyed the wine reception, the pool, the bubbling spa, and the terraza with the herb garden for a relaxing tea break.
We didn't have breakfast at the hotel. You get less expensive options outside. Try the Cafeteria Mallorca (300 Calle San Francisco) for some delicious Pan de Mallorca instead. Excellent choice of coffee you get at Cuatro Sombras (259 Calle Recinto Sur).
We did however tried the excellent tapas from the restaurant at El Convento in the evening. Very good choice!
We brought a rental car. Parking is extremly difficult around the hotel. They have valet parking for USD 20 across the street. Nevertheless we were always lucky of finding a regular parking space in the street after driving around for a while. Just make sure the sidewalk of the parking space is marked white. If it is yellow and blue you are not allowed to park.
All in all it was a fantastic experience and we would definitely return!

Room Tip: The Queen Deluxe Room was great. No high-ceiling but a very nice view (partially) over the harbor lo...

We stayed for seven nights and we love it. The staff was friendly and attentive. The room was clean and homely, nice room décor and a comfy bed with clean linen every day. Housekeeping was great!, room was made up twice a day. The wine and cheese happy hour was amazing not only the food and drinks but the venue: a terrace with magnificent views of San Juan Bay and Old San Juan (Two additional terraces and the swimming pool on the top floor also offer terrific views of San Juan). The hotel’s courtyard features “Patio del Nispero” restaurant at the ground level and “El Picoteo” restaurant on the upper level, we had meals at these restaurants, and both are charming and cozy with friendly staff (especial thanks to Carolina and Wilfred from El Picoteo). EL Convento’s beach club is a plus, we enjoyed beaches at Condado and Isla Verde by visiting two different beachfront sister properties, awesome! My only complaint is about the time we had to wait to be served at front desk (regularly only one person on duty), but it was compensated with free Puerto Rican’s candies. Thanks El Convento for this great stay and hope to visit again in the near future.

Room Tip: Room 201 has a balcony just over the main entrance

We stayed here in July. The location couldn't be better. It is a beautiful property. As soon as you enter it is charming and the staff is very welcoming. Getting to the hotel is challenging. We did have a car and traffic patterns are changed daily. Parking is right across the street though so once there it's convenient. You can walk anywhere you need to from the hotel. The room is nice with very high ceilings. The bathrooms seem to have been updated. Our patio was nothing to be excited about as it didn't have a view and was just a table and chairs with 3 walls once out there. They did turn down service every night and brought several bottles of water so you never had to worry about any of that which was awesome. We did eat at the Italian restaurant one night and it was great. We were here for 3 nights and then went to El Conquisatdor in Fajardo which I immediately wished I was back at the El Convento...Also make sure you go to Marmalade for dinner. Best meal I have ever had.

Room Tip: There are large glass doors for an added noise barrier in some rooms so there wasnt an issue with no...

We booked a basic room for the last night of our honeymoon in Puerto Rico. I think that even with the basic room we would have been impressed with this hotel, but their honeymoon suite was available and they upgraded us at no extra charge. The room and views were beautiful. We loved the wine reception in the evening, and the beautiful courtyard in the center of the hotel. The service was excellent and the bed was the best I have ever slept in. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in San Juan, El Convento was charming, historic, beautiful, clean, and comfortable.

Room Tip: If you can afford it go for the suite above the main entrance, it's excellent.
