“Charming Dining in Old San Juan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We didn't overnight at Hotel El Convento but throughly enjoyed two meals at El Picoteo and Patio del Nispero. Both charming venues located on the upper and lower levels of the hotel's courtyard. Wonderful Tapas and cocktails at El Picoteo. And a larger menus with a lovely bar at Patio del Nispero. All the staff encounters were excellent. Doorman was very helpful in securing us a taxi back to our Condado resort. El Convento is worth the trip for a meal in Old San Juan.

This hotel just feels genuine - not manufactured. It is pricey but there is a special feeling about being there that you don't find in chain hotels. Ask for a room upgrade - at some times of year you can get a larger room. Don't forget to dine in the lobby restaurant. It is not owned by the hotel, but is terrific. There is a nice lounge on the top floor with an honor bar - really, any kind of adult beverage you would want is there for the taking, You just write what you took on a sheet of paper and it goes on your bill. So why not five stars? Two things. The air conditioner in our unit needed service twice during our three night stay, and the "pool" is about the size of a pool table. If traveling with kids, stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Every room is different. Ask for an upgrade at the desk. We did and got lucky - spacious two room...

My friends and I only had one night at this wonderful hotel, and that was the only problem. The rooms were very spacious, and had lovely amenities like chocolate on the pillow, Aveda products in the bathroom, comfortable beds and soft robes. The property is absolutely gorgeous, with a large balcony facing the inner courtyard to enjoy your morning coffee or tea. I highly recommend!

Stayed here with my fiance during my 30th Bday. We were looking for some place quiet, fancy and upscale during those days. Everybody were very nice, helpful and corteus. Breakfast was amazing!! If you want a great place to stay in Old San Juan with no regrets, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: The 202 suite is great!! Loved the bathroom!!!

Spanish luxury in Old San Juan. This is hotel is in the center of the best part of the city. It is the antithesis of those new construction casino monstrosities close to the airport. Within walking distance of the beautiful 16th century fortresses that line the coast this hotel has the feel of old Spain. The hotel has a wonderful courtyard restaurant and bar where Caroline was especially helpful. Karen can get just about anything done for you at the front desk. It's romantic and the rooms are large and beautifully appointed. Looking forward to going back! -MF (NYC)

Room Tip: 307 is the best in the house. It's sensational.

This is a true five star hotel. It has it all, shops, casino, excellent restuarants, beautiful pools, beach access with service on the beach and multiple night clubs. This hotel is indeed the class of Puerto Rico.

Room Tip: choose a room on the upper floors. Some rooms overlook banquet rooms so that you are looking out on...

Stayed here with my family during the Labor day weekend. Since our arrival everybody were very nice, helpful and very courteous. If you want to be in a historic area and have everything at a walking distance this is the place. Keep in mind that this hotel is a historic building and they kept every room almost unaltered, meaning that they are not big, but are very comfortable, with all the amenities of a modern hotel, even WIFI in every room. There are certain dates that you want to avoid staying here if you are in the plan of resting and/or visiting different areas, and that is during "calle San Sebastian" festival in mid January. If you are young and want to party all night long this is the time you want to be here, otherwise avoid this place or you will be caught in the middle of the crowd or traffic jams for hours. A little bit pricey but a beautiful place to visit.

Room Tip: Not very good for families more than 4
