“Wonderful staff and hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

We had a wonderful stay at Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. The hotel is beautiful and in a wonderful location. What particularly stands out is the staff and the welcoming service they provide. From being greeted and helped by Uriel, the Bellman and by Annette at the Front Desk, to our interactions with other staff during our stay, the gracious staff made our stay incredibly special. We returned from dinner one night to find a bottle of champagne and truffles in the room (Annette had sent them up after learning that our anniversary was later in the week).
Our rooms were beautifully painted and comfortably sized, with juliet balconies overlooking a small square and the Cathedral. On Christmas Eve and Day we could hear the choir from the church. An old man sits in the square and plays beautiful guitar. The public spaces are great. There is a lovely terrace with a tiny plunge pool and a nice jacuzzi. The floor below has another terrace as well as an indoor lounge which has tea and coffee available all day and complementary wine and cheese each evening. It is very nice to have common spaces to be able to sit comfortably with family or friends.
We loved staying in Old San Juan because it is a great place to walk and explore. There are two old forts - we particularly enjoyed San Felipe del Morro which sits on the tip of Old San Juan. Wonderful vistas and fun to watch families flying kites on the green parkland in front of the fort.

Room Tip: Rooms facing west on higher floors have a beautiful view over the bay and sunset. Our rooms faced th...

This hotel was absolutely beautiful! The rooms are extremely clean, the staff is friendly, and so are the other guests. The hotel keeps it's historical feel, but is updated with the comforts of a 5 star hotel; it's incredibly unique and charming! It is right next to the San Juan Cathedral and during mass you can hear the music flowing from the church. It is in the heart of old San Juan and is within walking distance to many shops, restaurants, forts, mayor's house, and the entrance to San Juan. This is a must!

I like the hotel a lot. It is clean, has a fantastic patio and from 6pm to 7pm they serve complimentary wine and cheese on the 3rd floor, which is a must. The best free wine I ever had!

The only reason I am not tilting full stars is the pricing. We paid over $500 per night for the double queen room with a view to the church, which is nice and quiet. The size is not very huge. As an old monastery the room feels like 2 old tiny cells have been combined to one. All is OK for 5 stars: bathroom clean, big TV (which you will not use much in this vibrant city) and the interior is nice. But $500 per night compared to rates of $300 or less for the other rooms is just not justified.

Enough of the complaints: the good parts are the fantastic building, the excellent restaurants and the top location in Old San Juan. The staff is nice, but not on the level of a Four Seasons or a Ritz Carlton.

I would come again and probably choose one of the cheaper rooms.

The roof terrace is great, too. The pool is tiny, but good for a refreshing dip. The hot tub is hot, grab a wine and chill for sunset :-)

Room Tip: Do only upgrade, if you are staying in the room a lot. The extra money is better spend on food and d...

El Convento is located in the heart of old San Juan. The minute you walk in the door, you feel at home. The ambience is peaceful and charming, the staff friendly and attentive. I stayed here two nights before a cruise and a night after the cruise. They remembered me and made sure I was taken care of. I was able to store my luggage upon checkout for several hours until boarding my ship. Upon return the same service until my room was ready. My room was incredible! First floor opening onto the courtyard. Beautiful hand carved headboards, original tile, marble bathroom and housekeeping service morning and evening. The wine and cheese reception every night at 6 pm was exceptional. I loved hearing the church services and music on Sunday mornings drifting across the courtyard. Short walk to the forts, food and shops. Lovely hotel and I will be coming back with my friends next fall!

Room Tip: Loved the first floor as it opened onto the courtyard.

There is a reason why this is a five star hotel. Great location in old San Juan, a charming building, and fantastic services. They offer a second house keeping service in the evening, they fixed our beds, cleaned bathroom, and emptyed trash.
We were late for wine reception, but the staff was kind enough to fix a cheese plates for us.
They were very quick to address any issues. I certainly will stay again next time.

A beautiful hotel with wonderful old world charm. It's also one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights of our week long anniversary in Puerto Rico. We loved it. The rooms are on the smaller size, but it's definitely made up for in location and character. All parts of Old San Juan are within walking distance of El Convento. As far as location, I wouldn't stay anywhere else. The hotel restaurants offer a good selection of food in the patio area and there's also a plunge pool and spa on the upper level. We stayed in an upper level queen bed room with a view of the bay which was amazing. The rooms are air conditioned and also have special doors to shut out the sounds and humidity. All around, we loved it and hope to be back soon.

El Convento was as charming as Old San Juan itself. As soon as you enter this boutique hotel you're transported to another place and time. A 350 year old converted convent will do that. The rooms, pool, outdoor atrium, bar, restaurant....all had an old world style. Without exception, the staff were friendly and accommodating. Side note: if you like Mojito's ask Margaret to make you her own special version that includes fresh ginger and passion juice; it's amazing. Several of the staff members were helpful in directing us to some great spots for lunch and dinner. San Juan is a great place to explore (El Morro is awesome) and El Convento is a great hotel to start and finish each day.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor which is the same level as the plunge pool and sun deck. Very convenient fo...
