“Fantastic Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

This is one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had. We arrived early, and they allowed us to check our bags but still have access to the rest of the hotel's facilities. After checkin, we explored the old city by foot, which is easily done, and returned for the wine and cheese reception at 6:00, which is provided by the hotel. We enjoyed everything about our stay and are planning another vacation to this city so that we may stay here again.

Beautiful hotel, great location, attentive staff. An historic building that has been refurbished tastefully. Easy street access with appropriate room security. Multiple bars with adult beverages. Rooms are clean with adequate space.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel El Convento in late November 2012, and it was one of the best hotel experiences we have had. We had stayed in luxury hotels before, like the Omni and Four Seasons, and Hotel El Convento's customer service was on par with those hotels. The only down-side is that they did not have a shuttle to the airport, but it's probably difficult for them to have one, given it is not a large hotel. The manager's reception was awesome, as was the pool and lounge area, with views of the ocean. We're in our late-twenties, and we would recommend this hotel to people of any age. If we ever make it back to San Juan, we would definitely stay in Hotel El Convento again.

My second visit was better than the first.
The feeling from the staff was like coming home to good family and friends.
Everyone remembers you, it was fantastic.I was in room #511. Excellent view and was great to leave the doors open at night and listen to the Cocqui.
Thanks again to everyone for another great vacation at the best small luxury hotel in San Juan.
Don walter

Room Tip: # 511 great view

Stayed with my boyfriend for 4 nights in November. The property is beautiful, well maintained, and well decorated. Everything in Old San Juan is pretty much within walking distance and this hotel is particularly close to the Catedral San Juan Bautista, Casa Blanca, and the Puerta de San Juan (leading to the Paseo Princesa).

Our room was the standard queen with French doors overlooking the pool area. Aside from the noise factor of being next to the elevator, the room was great. Comfy bed. Tiled floors. Plenty of space. Very clean.

Pool is really just a dip pool, not large enough for swimming. 6 people pretty much fill it up. But the pool area itself, including a small whirl pool and lounge chairs, has great views and is open 24-7, which is nice.

No complaints on the service, other than we felt the desk staff recommendations for dining missed the mark. Most places they suggested turned out to be touristy and clearly caterering to the cruise ship crowd. So just be warned if you're more of a foodie, you won't like their recommendations. (Our favs were the Waffleria, Jibarito, and Cafe San Juan.)

We did dine at the hotel cafe for breakfast, which was fine. El Picateo, their tapas bar, was overpriced and hit or miss with the dishes. We did not try the hotel's pizza place, but it smelled good! The wine hour from 6-7 is a nice idea, but they don't put out nearly enough glasses, cheese/crackers, fruit, etc for the amount of guests they have and it was not replenished. If you want anything, go right at 6:00.

Overall, this place is clearly the best to be had in Old San Juan in terms of atmosphere. Would definitely stay here again. But it's just shy of being a "wow" experience.

Room Tip: 503, and therefore I assume all the "03"s. are right next to the elevator.

We stayed here two nights at the beginning of October. The front desk is always busy and when we arrived the clerk didn't orient us to where we were by providing a map. When we asked later a more helpful clerk gave us a map. We called many weeks ahead to have a room with a crib (we were traveling with a 2 and 1/2 year old). They front desk was very overwhelmed and we had to oddly wait for them to find us a room. They gave us room 310 which was the smallest size room I have ever been in. There was no crib which wouldn't have fit anyway. Before we trudged back down the stairs I noticed a room open that was being cleaned and made note of that room number as it seemed decent size for the three of us and the $200.00 they were charging us. By the way room 310 is as far away from people as you can imagine, it is tucked off the 2nd floor under a staircase and is dark inside. Unless you are a recluse who does not like the sun I cannot imagine anyone "liking" this room. The hotel clerk was a bit flustered and "put out" that we didn't like our room and then a manager made us wait as they"searched for another room". Being exhausted I told them about the room we had seen. They said we could have that room but we'd have to wait for it. After an hour and a half we had a room. When we entered the room for the first time we noticed an interior glass door in addition to the front door. We learned later that night that they had a huge wedding and anyone would need to have the glass door for the noise. We did like the free beverages and the pool. There was also very kind bell hop that helped deliver our luggage to our room as it had been lost by the airlines. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Do not take room 310 or any rooms close to the Wedding reception area. Ask if they are having a wed...

Mr. Travelloveto,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry that your arrival and room accommodations were not as expected. I will work with our guest service staff to ensure that this is no longer an issue. We understand how important it is to make a first impression and we certainly would not like for any of our guests to start on the wrong foot.

I am glad that the front desk supervisor was able to assist you changing you to another room of your preference once it was cleaned and inspected by our housekeeping supervisor who insured that you would not go through further inconveniences. Please contact me on your next visit to Puerto Rico as I would like to personally assist you with your room accommodations and provide you with the best of care.

Best regards,
