The good - it did not feel dangerous to be there, the king bed was fine, it is close to the bus stop and to the Hilton Caribe Starbucks. We found it by navigating to the Caribe, that is quite easy, it is a block short of the turn in to the Caribe. The Bad -- we booked a king plus twin. Because I read here that there was a problem with sheets, I called the night before to make sure that the twin would have linens when we arrived late at night, because the pictures made the "twin" look like a sofa. The twin is a futon. There were no linens for it. The front desk clerk, who I believe took my call the night before, said he did not have access to the linen closet (ridiculous) and had to scour other rooms for linens. He was unapologetic. While we were waiting for linens, I realized that the towels were dirty and there was NO toilet paper in the bathroom. More trips for the desk clerk. The floors were also dirty (sticky, hair, etc.) I ignored the hand scrawled sign for tips in the room -- if you want a tip, you should actually clean the dang room. We did not get to bed until at least an hour after our midnight arrival bc of the missing sheets. The clerk did not mention breakfast (?) at check in and there was no sign of it when we woke up. We walked over to the Caribe to get our car out ($20) and went into the hotel lobby hoping to find a coffee shop and happened upon the Starbucks. While we were there, we got directions to the bus from the Hilton Concierge. The Hilton people were some of the nicest I have met. I would never stay at the lousy Park Hotel again.

I found the San Juan Park Hotel to be charming and adequate for our needs. It's not an upscale hotel, but it's cute and clean. It could use a little updating, but if you're just here to sleep and shower, it's fine.

Pros:
Staff - Nicole, the evening front desk clerk, was so helpful. We knew what we wanted to do, but not how to make it happen. She helped us book a rental car and plan our day in the rainforest. She even printed directions for us and recommended what to take with us. When we asked for restaurant suggestions, she did a little research and made us a list. She was wonderful!

Location - the location is great. It's close to the public beach, a quick bus ride to Old San Juan, close to Condado, and close to car rentals.

Price - we stayed here for $71 per night. I couldn't find anywhere else decent in that price range.

Laundry - after 4, you can use the washer and dryer for free. They're a little old and often still full of the hotels sheets and towels, but it's a nice perk. We stayed here after a cruise and tried to pack light so we needed to do laundry upon arrival. After our day in the rainforest, it was nice to take our wet clothes straight to the washer. Make sure that you bring your own detergent.

Atmosphere - the hotel is small and feels like it. We only saw a handful of other guests during our stay. It feels private and quiet here. The sun deck is nice and usually empty.

Breakfast - free and continental style. Not a great selection, but it's free.

Refrigerator in the room.

Cons:
Bathroom ventilation - the bathroom has no ventilation and no way to open the window. It gets really steamy in there and takes a long time to clear out.

Bed - the beds leave something to be desired. The mattress pads are slick and the sheets aren't fitted. They kind of slide all over the place during the night. The pillows are pretty flat, too.

Room size - the rooms are tiny. If you don't need a lot of space, it's fine.

Windows - my husband wanted to open the windows to let some fresh air in, but they're locked.

I booked the hotel through hotels.com and the location map was incorrect--well I just took a look at the map on TA and it's incorrect too :-) The actual location is close to the "25" hwy sign on the map here, about 1.5mi from the old town, and it's not on a beach. We needed two separate beds and this was the only hotel that offers it with a reasonable distance to the old town. Now guess what--when we walked in we found the second "bed" was a couch with no bedding! The front desk said housecleaning is gone after 2pm and he couldn't get anything for us. I found this to be unacceptable and simply call hotels.com for a credit (this is why I trust hotels.com). But the worst about this hotel is noise. It's facing a very busy street and there's constant traffic throughout the night. The window doesn't block anything so even my earplugs didn't work. I think next time if I have to make a stop here before a cruise, I would stay in Condado.

We stayed for four nights after a cruise. The hotel is clean and simple, don't expect anything more. There was three of us in the larger room (with king size bed and a sofa bed). The AC was working well. We made a mistake and turned it off one day when going out. When we came back the moisture in the room was something horrible... But that was our fault!

The location is good, busses to the old town and Condando (75 cents) are a one minute walk from the hotel. Traffic noise is a bit loud though, because of a major road below the windows. So if you are a light sleeper this might not be your hotel.

Breakfast is very basic too. Coffee, juice, toast, cereal, fruit and muffins. But the coffee was good and fruit fresh! Oh, and you can use the free wi-fi in your room.
