Weeks after our far too short a stay at Lime Tree Farm, my wife and I continue to reflect back on, and delight in sharing with friends and travelers, our extremely fond memories of Lime Tree Farm.
Perched atop a beautiful hill high up in the verdant Blue Mountains of Jamaica, Lime Tree Farm offers comfortable, well-appointed cottage accommodations with a truely spectaular mountain vista of the surrounding mountain ranges, rivers, and down to the sea. The namesake blue haze that floats gently above the panorama is a sight to behold and, unfortunately, one that few travelers and fewer tourists will ever have the pleasure of witnessing because most will not trouble themselves to discover the rich rewards of a destination that is a little more difficult to reach.
While the stereotypical image of Jamaica in the mind's eye of most people that have never actually been to this iconic island is that of rum, reggae, and beaches, the Blue Mountains provide a true glimpse into the real Jamaica and the people that call her home. There is a genuine good-natured hospitality amoung the Jamaicans that you encounter here. Everyone greets you with a warm smile and welcome that has become increasingly hard to find in the primarily over-developed Caribbean of today.
Nowhere is this more evident than at Lime Tree Farm, which is the perfect outpost from which to enjoy all that the Blue Mountains have to offer. Charlie, an expat from the UK who has called Jamaica home for over twenty years, and his lovely Jamaican-born wife, Suzie, along with their good friend and partner, Roger (also originally from the UK), are the owners of the property and take personal care to ensure that you are comfortable and welcomed as if an old friend. Having spent my entire life managing hotels and resorts, I have always endeavored to ensure that guests realize they have met new friends by the time they return home. Charlie and crew are perhaps the only people that I have met in my own travels that have left me with this sensation. I expressed to my wife shortly after our departure that I almost felt embarrassed about how comfortable I was made to feel at Lime Tree.
The farm itself is far more than just a quaint 3 guest cottage mountain-top paradise retreat. It is also a working farm, complete with exotic fruit and vegetables, many of which find their way to your breakfast and dinner plates. Suzie is an extraordinary cook, albeit very humble and modest. She prepared for us many wonderful meals rich in traditional Jamaican ingredients and techniques. Jamaica has one of the richest culinary heritages in the entire Caribbean, which Suzie gave us the opportunity to experience instead of subjecting us to the standard continental fare that most restaurants in the Caribbean serve.
One of the main of many reasons I love to travel is to experience new cultures and geographic regions, which can only be accomplished by meeting the local people, experiencing new tastes and textures through their food and drink, and adventuring through their lands and waters. Lime Tree Farm, and the fabulous staff, allowed us to enjoy all of the above in great abundance. If you are looking for an authentic Jamaican vacation getaway that will leave you astounded and feeling renewed, look no further. If you still do not want to miss the beach and taste the salty sea on your lips, why not plan to spend one week at a Jamaican resort on or near the beach (check out Hotel Mocking Bird Hill in Port Antonio) and one week at Lime Tree Farm up in the Blue Mountains? It really does not get any better than a sea and mountain escape!
