“Very nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2010

Nice hotel, staff is very pleasant and provides great service. Food at the a la cartes varies - Don Pablo's and the Japanese restaurant are amazing! The Italian restaurant wasn't so great. The buffet is pretty good but limited in variety - it gets really repetitive after a couple days. The desserts are great. The jerk chicken was wonderful.
The beaches seem manmade and don't compare to Negril but are nice enough. The pool is great, very nice to sit out and relax. Room service is laughable - you can get a grilled cheese sandwich or a fruit plate and that's it for your options.
It's a great resort for couples and families which there were lots of - not a lot of young 20somethings.

stayed here from Nov 26 - Dec 3

Transfer to hotel was excellent. About 1 hour with a stop half way for a beer and washroom break. Bus driver John was the best driver we have ever had. He gave us the run down and lots of info on Jamaica over the PA for the entire trip;

Rooms
Large, very clean all junior suites. We had a wonderful ocean front view on the 5th floor. 21000 block (right next to the construction that didn't bother us a bit). King bed, seperate shower and whirlpool tub. Had the Golden Club option which was well worth it just for the great location, 4 pre-booked a la cartes, free safe, free internet, beach bags and bottle of rum. It was our 25th anniversary so the hotel staff brought us free t-shirts to our room.

Food
Buffet was good. A bit repeatitive but that was ok since we only ate there 3 out of 7 nights since we had 4 a cartes for the rest of the nights. I missed the Italian which my hubby said wasn't the best however the rest were excellent, especially the Japanese. Jerk chicken for lunch at the beach was awesome.

Beach
Snorkeling beach out front was great for snorkelling. Lots of fish (and different fish that we haven't seen other places) Swimming beach to the west was nice and sandy, water nice and clear, one day some waves which were fun but calm for the most part. Very few weeds and no rocks or coral. Not sure what people are complaining about when saying there is a long walk to the beach. Have been to many resorts that are very spread out and this one is very compact considering the large amount of rooms. We were located on the far side of the resort (as far as you could get from the swimming beach and it was less than a 10 min walk - honestly if thats too far for you to walk you need to pick a 200 room resort where everything is right there).

Pools
Nice pools. Very clean. A little noisy for us near the swim up pool. We spent most of our time near the construction end.

Excursions
Did Dunns River, tubing down the rapids and toured Ochos Rios and the surrounding area - a private tour with Peat Taylor Tours very good. Did this on the Sunday so nice an quiet since the cruise ships don't visit that day.

Entertainment
Only went to one show but it was a nice set up but seem to be the typical shows like they have at any other resor.

Construction
No very noticable. New section almost done which will be really nice once open They say another 1000 rooms however counting the windows doesn't add up to that for me. I personally think once all the additions they have planned are done this resort will be too big (will be the biggest resort on the island)

Summary
I got the flu about half way through the trip (which I am pretty sure I caught before leaving home ). It put a damper on my trip and I was really ill for a several days. Staff was really nice and brough room service for breakfast for when I didn't feel well. Saw the nurse who was really nice and supplied me with some over the counter drugs to help. Even though I didn't feel well for part of the trip I would love to go back to this hotel again. It was a really good value for the price we paid.

We stayed at the Gran Bahia for out honeymoon and had a fantastic time. The room was massive and cleaned every day by our lovely maid lola. The balcony was also large with great views over the pool and out to sea. As we were a honeymoon couple the hotel even gave various gifts inc a bottel of Moet and a massive cake! We ate at the al-acarte restaurants which were lovely and the main buffet restaurant was also really good with a large variety of foods. The drinks and bar staff we great and we enjoyed sampleing all the cocktails! The hotel was clean and tidy and the pool was really nice. The cove beach to the side of the hotel had more sand than the one directly behind and we really enjoyed swimming in the sea. We did the Tours to Dunn's River, Bob Marley & the Dolphins and had an amazing time. Worth paying the extra for the club suite though as you get a extra's like a private check-in minibar and room service. There is still some building work but the resort is so large its easy to avoid any noise! I would highly recommend Jamaica and this hotel.

The Hotel was lovely the room great with a spacious bathroom with separate shower, very large bed, room cleaned everyday. The beach are to the front of the hotel poor shale not sand, but the small bay to the side has lovely sand, The al le carte restaurants are good, so is the buffet. Things I did not like were the bar staff were to slow, but some of the waitresses were very good (you just have to find them, Bridget is the best) the main terrace bar shuts at 1140pm but you can get drinks in another bar, they also served some drinks late on in plastic cups which is not good enough for a 4 star plus. Not bad but there are better hotels. There is a new wing still being built so its noisey to the east and some of the music for us is to lud arounfd the pool and if yopu ahve kids shall we say the rap music has a few to many choice words in it

When we first got to the resort I was very impressed. The lobby and grounds were beautiful and constantly being worked on. Check in was very smooth, no issues. The room and the view were beautiful as well. Our room was very clean and cleaned daily. The buffet was not good - especially for breakfast and lunch - the same food every day. We only went there a couple of times for dinner as we had 4 al a carte dinner reservations and we ordered room service one night. The outside Snack Bar was a great place for lunch. It too was a buffet and the same food was served every day, but the view is incredible and the Jerk Chicken that is served just a few steps down from the Snack Bar buffet was fabulous.
Besides the regular buffet, the one thing that disappointed me was the staff. For the most part they were very unfriendly - the women more so than the men. A couple of times I rode the elevator with some chambermaids and they actually turned around to face the wall instead of talking. We called down one night to have soft drinks brought up to the room and I was hung up on once and when I finally spoke to someone, he said they would be right up. We never got the drinks. If you are a woman and want to be served quickly at the pool or lobby bar, wear a bikini.
Would I go back - probably.

got back last friday from a 1 week vacation. i dont know where whats going on with the reveiws??? i thought the food was excellent and in the buffet and restaurants.,,,garden grill was the least favourite but we ate it and it just got beter with each of the four restaurants we got reservations for. we also had them for 7pm each night which was perfect. no problem at all with the buffet. i always the jamaica cuisine which was my favourite but no complaints at all. only the american night....nothing there looked appetizing for me at all, but i still managed to eat and be full...jerk chicken and the outside grill was awesome. watered down drinks??? tip and that is not a problem at all. great drinks, whatever you want and friendly courteous wait and bar staff. if we didnt get served coffe in the buffet we didnt tip, it only happend once. the cleaning staff was awesome towels every day, restock fridge extra chips little note in the room twice hoping we were having a good time. beach was not the best, it was rocky, but whatever wear flip flops for gods sake. couldnt beat the weather all week, check in (golden club) was great and got to our room a couple hours before check in time.for the price we paid we would definitely return.
