“Beautiful, New and Clean!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We took a trip with close friends and actually got married at this resort. Although still considered new, this resort is one of the nicest and friendliest places we have visited over the years.....laid back but excellent.

We visited this resort for a family wedding. I was very excited since this was my first visit to Jamaica. I was definitely not disappointed in Jamaica, the property or the service. The food was excellent at all the restaurants. The bartenders were super helpful and always happy to "create" a new drink for you. The service staff, from maintenance to servers at restaurants to the cleaning service...everyone was wonderful! We booked through Air Canada Vacations, and I do recommend them. The rest of our party booked through other vacation providers and didn't get the great additional service we did. Our rooms were better, the on-site staff was very helpful and our check-in was very smooth.

So, here is the "but..."

1. The Grand Bahia also sells timeshares. EVERYWHERE you go, there is someone stopping you to make an appointment to see the "vacation property" opportunity. They are aggressive, and will let you know they are working off commission. It got to the point where I was very uncomfortable walking through the lobby because I couldn't stand being badgered anymore.

2. The property is beautiful, but the best spot by the pool, the one with the nice lounge chairs, is only for "members". So, you are made to feel like riff-raff while the members get a nice area. Don't get me wrong, the whole pool area is nice, but if you want a quieter area away from shouting children, in a comfortable chair, it would be nice to be able to sit at that end of the pool.

3. The property is HUGE! Be prepared to walk! Our room was at one end (newer end) of the hotel. We liked the far end of the beach, the opposite end. It was almost a 15 minute walk from one end to the other.

Aside from that, it was a nice vacation. If they stopped selling timeshares, I would definitely go back. Until then, next time I visit Jamaica I will look for another resort.

We had a 4 day/5 night package booked through Air Miles. (Side note: I thought it was funny the resort had never heard of Air Miles when they interviewed us for their 'contest' (marketing giveaway left in our room to get our email/feedback) but the majority of guests were European.)

The forecast showed rain each day with 10-60% chance so we got worried as we were traveling but as guests and the hotel staff assured us there is rain each day but mostly just a quick shower in the afternoon. For how hot the weather was we welcomed the sprinkles...

Montego Bay airport customs was a nightmare...2 hours in non-AC room with hundreds of other travelers. Maybe book to arrive NOT on a Saturday? Once we got outside we had a refreshing Red Stripe @ Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville bar and only waited 10 minutes for our transfer. We had a private van with quite the driver...Coke! He stopped for us along the way (1 hr drive?) to get beer and took a cut from the bartender for himself. I guess that's the way...

Check-in was OK...thick accents and quick, rambling speeches by staff who are bored repeating so we only caught half of what Patrick said. Don't be shy to ask questions. We could have upgraded to Don Pablo section for $500 ($25/day/person) but as the room quality/amenities were no different and it was just services (private pool/lounging areas, butler etc) we declined. Might have been worth it to a couple, not a family.

Our room was great from the start...ocean view as promised, 2 doubles and clean. Chambermaid was prompt every day and did a great job only missing washcloths 1 day. I think tipping and kind words go a long way with this staff. The safe is $6/day but worth it and the fridge is just a glorified cooler so pop/water/beer are only kind of cold. Could never get more than a couple beer/day but that's OK b/c you can get as much as you want everywhere else.

Grounds are massive so be prepared to walk. They are well maintained by landscaping. The only functional issues we encountered were backed up pool toilets (near towel hut) from overuse and some off-season repairs being done of chiseled marble tile. Annoying sound but it's got to be done sometime...and the hotel was very good about safety.

The Orchid buffet was the only open for breakfast as the hotel's volume was down b/c it's offseason. It was clean and well stocked and the staff seating you and servicing you no matter what area were great. No we did not get our napkins laid on our laps like the Don Pablo/Gold/Platinum club wristband folks did but who wants that anyhow for breakfast!? Ralston was my favourite server...he seemed to be a Supervisor and always greeted us with a smile each morning! The native food offerings as well as typical Western breakfast foods were great and there is a vegetarian section and a kids section to the buffet. I loved my daily Mimosa and there was a smoothie bar too. The only bummer was the long line @ the omelette station but that can be avoided if you go early.

Lunches we had either on the patio outside Orchid or at the Snack Bar near the beach (once we found it!) for Jerk chicken and BBQ. Great steel band played one day and despite the roaming crows and kitties looking for scraps it served well for lunch. Great view of the beach for lunchtime!

We had a buffet dinner the 1st night (we tried curried goat, jerk chicken, salt fish and yummy callilou), then tried Dolce Vita (Italian), Mikado (Japanese with teppanyaki table service) and finally Garden Grille (steak). All service at the dinners were very good. Praise to Garden Grille for a relaxing atmosphere. Praise to Dolce Vita for great antipasto buffet and welcome drinks. Praise to Mikado for humourous staff. Garfield our chef needs some work with this performance so don't expect flames or flying food as in other teppanyaki places but his server Gavin was fabulous as was the fried ice cream.

The 3 interconnecting pools were reasonably clean for how many bodies used them slathered in sunscreen. (Unfortunately I only found 1 outdoor shower that worked all week or else I would have rinsed prior to swimming...) The towel hut opened promptly @ 8AM and don't forget to ask for a card or a replacement towel as their system was one of the things @ check-in that was explained too quickly. There is a kiddie pool nearest the lobby/spa which then turns into the adult party pool with bar nearest Garden Grille/towel hut and then at the far end is another quieter section with jet spas inset and even further the 'private' Don Pablo pool. We swam in there all week without incident.

The sports beach that is most central and closest to the gazebo and piers is shells so do take sandals or water socks. We didn't do paddle boats, kayaking, jetting this time...
The nicer, larger beach beyond Building 118 and nearest the snack hut is FABULOUS for swimming, lounging, snorkeling, walking. We didn't find it until end of Day 2 and wished we had used it more. There are vendors in the water but you can easily ignore them and the clear water and soft sand provide for hours of fun! Bring your own gear so there is no time limit.

The evening entertainment at the outside lobby bar was great...piano, R&B/reggae, funk bands and we enjoyed that after dinner each night before retiring with our kiddos. We would have liked to see the International Show as the players came around to entice us but it didn't start until 9:45PM. Might they consider a 9PM start so families can enjoy? There was however kids shows earlier at the outdoor stage in the marketplace. We liked that we could get a drink at that bar and shop while sipping. Great idea!

Photographer with tropical birds takes pretty good photos and the cost to get a CD was reasonable to get that memory. We really enjoyed our stay and experience, even without seeing Jamaica off property. Next time...

Room Tip: 5 stories and there are elevators. Consider the temperature for the amount of walking you want to d...

I'll start by saying it wasn't a bad place at all. Its a nice grand resort in beautiful Jamaica (biased because that's my heritage) and definitely a nice getaway. While on vacation, you need to 'slow down' and that's what Jamaica is all about - 'no rush man' - jus chill :) The lower than expected rating may be harsh but still deserved. The resort could be so much more - a true 5 star experience if they'd just get their 'ish' together.

Check in was fine - the front desk staff expedited us through the process and even served us a glass of 'something' - maybe champagne mixed with fruit juice - really can't say because it wasn't great - a bit too sweet for me.

The room was nice as well. We paid for the sea view and got it. Top floor so the view was great. The room was good too - very big - nice and surprisingly comfortable king size bed, the pillows could be a bit thicker to round that out. The washroom was nice although starting to show its wear. The marble hides some of the aging but looking closely you can see it could benefit from a power washing or some sort of treatment.

The main buffet is a good mix of traditional and local jamaican options for those daring souls. All in all it was 'meh'. I found the Jamaican dishes way too salty (or saltier than what my mom makes). The rest of food was standard resort food - kinda bland - definitely made with volume in mind. The specialty restaurants were good (your package will dictate how many you can access) - we had the Japanese Teppanyaki which was good with a lively staff - the Garden Grill which was ok - not great but ok - and the 'Don Pablo' which was an attempt at 'high-end cuisine' and was about 90% there except for a poor wine list (red or wine - no variation).

The beaches - well just make sure you ask where the beach is. The one directly north of the main pool is the 'snorkel beach' more for that activity. The 'good beach' is just west of the main pool. Its nice, the water is clear and shallow for a good distance from the shore.

So the things that ruined it for me

Dirty Bed Linens - on 2 occasions our bed was made with stained linens. We called the front desk one night at midnight to provide new linens which took 2 phone calls and 45 minutes!!!

Activities - there aren't really a lot of activities and those that are available are run by lackluster staff. Not really engaging, making side jokes with other staff in 'patois slang' which I understand and found a bit rude.

Electrical problems - our room had a faulty electric switch (resorts usually require you to put one of the room keys in to run the electricity while you're in the room - you remove it when you leave to conserve power). Ours didn't work at all - took 2 visits from the on-site electrician. The first just kicked the outlet which worked temporarily but died the next morning. The second guy actually took time to open the switch and essentially bypass the key mechanism so we could run our AC without the key.

I guess I would hope that staff would be attentive to their guests but things seem to be done on their schedule - or 'jamaican time' :)

Room Tip: They apparently have a premium package called 'Don Pablo' which includes a flat screen TV in...

Staff was fine but they seem like they are from a poor community so they friendliness only extends as far as your tip can. There is only 1 ATM on site so bring cash for other things if needed. The room was lovely and the grounds were clean but aging in some places. The dinner at the buffet was tasty and the sandy beach was amazing.

It is far away from places to visit so arrange for cab services as well. The ocean and pool is beautiful.

Room Tip: Stay in a 14-1600 room so that there does not have to be so much walking

We appreciate your feedback and your kind words about the lovely room, cleanliness, food at the buffets, the pool and beach.

On the other hand, we are overwhelmed knowing the impressions with which you left our property and we do apologize for this situation. We traveled August 24 - 31, 2013. I have visited Jamaica five times and this was by far the best resort stay. I loved the property and the service. The staff is wonderful, great food and entertainment. I prefer the location away from the city - Montego Bay.

One negative about the stay; the housekeeping staff is great but you do not receive washcloths in a timely manner. I read about this in an on-line review prior to leaving and purchased a package of washcloths to bring with me. That was a smart move.

Other than that, I love this resort and will definitely return.

Room Tip: Rooms with an ocean view; the sunrise/sunsets are the best I have seen.
