We had a great time! Friendly staff, clean resort, the food was delicious and entertainment and shopping was good. Only complaint i have is there was some repairs being done at night and kept us up a little from banging of tools

Just got back from a family wedding at the Grand Bahia, what a fabulous week! The resort is beautiful, well run and clean. I was with a large group that were scattered throughout the resort and no one had a bad thing to say about their rooms.
The buffet was good, different food themes every night (make sure you try the home made donuts). We ate at four a la carte restaurants; Picasso, The Grill, Dolce Vita and Mikado (we chose the “cooking show” option which was quite entertaining). The food was good in all 3. I do recommend that if you like to eat early that you make your 3 or 4 reservations when you first arrive. Two of our dinners were at 9pm which was a bit of a pain given we were traveling with kids.
I recommend booking your excursions with the folks by the pool, Gina was a terrific help and very friendly. We did a group excursion to Dunns River Falls on the catamaran, what a blast. The climb up the falls is amazing (a bit of a workout), the crew of the catamaran were very entertaining and the snorkeling was terrific. We also took a car into Ocho Rios for shopping, Gina arranged a driver and he was great.
There is nightly entertainment at a shopping complex located within the resort, this is also where the partying takes place after the bars close in the hotel (11pm).
The beach was amazing, plenty big enough and the sand was great. All in all it was a fantastic week. If you are on your way there lucky you and make sure you make the most of the 7 days as they will fly by far to quickly!!

Overall: an excellent resort and good value for money. The guest rooms are large and well designed. There are several à la carte restaurants from which to choose, and the food is up to par for this class of hotel. The beach is in a sheltered cove and is great for wading, swimming and playing with children, and snorkelling over sheltered reefs. There were no beach vendors to interrupt our peace and enjoyment. The staff are very friendly. At least in the week we were there, there was plenty of space around the pools and on the beach to be able to find either sunny or shady spots with loungers. Unlike many resorts, it wasn’t necessary to get out early before breakfast to reserve a spot for the day - a very civilized alternative.

We can pick holes, though. Only one of three sail boats was in commission, and with no reservation system it became a matter of luck to get on the water. The room cleaning was good but missed details. Sometimes we were without towels for several hours. We twice reported minor problems in our room but nothing was fixed in the week we were there.

Room Tip: Best to be on the ground floor as the elevators are very small and often slow to come.

I live in Kingston, Jamaica and driving to the country is one of my hobbies, I have passed this hotel many times and had no interest because of the things the locals said happen while construction was being done and the outside design is just OK. But let me tell u.......i'Ill be back!!!!

Every year for the past seven years i have been going to the Jamaica Jazz and blues festival. Anyway for Dec 2012 i exhausted my funds in travelling extensively for the Christmas, Nevertheless my good friend talked me into going even one night. I agreed, it was next to impossible to find accommodation at last minute but we did at a certain hotel in runaway bay. On the 26th of January on our way down that hotel called to tell us they were overbooked and could not host us. Can u imagine how flabbergasted we were? We were frantic, angry and we were just lost. To do the three hour drive back to Kingston in the night ,Oh boy!'

At this point my friend remembered that she stayed at Gran Bahia Principe Jamaica, i was very apprehensive to say the least, but at that point we had no choice. So she called a work colleague of hers and she put on us on to an angel (literally) Rosie who worked at the hotel but was not at work but in return she gave us a Guardian Angel Sandra in sales, Wow!!! The top class service began at the security.

When we went in the guardian angel greeted us with a diamond smile and from there i was sold. The area we were checked in "The Don Pablo" was brilliantly decorated, airy, it had a waiting area, a lounge and a bar(that actually had premium liquor). The hostesses were assuring, knowledgeable, and affable.

After check-in, which was long but not unbearable given the short notice, we went to our room. The rooms are average in decor(or comparing to the hotels i have stayed in the past) very very clean, bed not as stately as i like but comfortable, stocked bar, room service, butler service, and the view was spectacular !!!!!!!

I cannot end this without talking about the staff, they know what service is all about the hotel was packed at maximum capacity and i still felt like royalty. Sandra in sales, the team in Don Pablo check in, housekeeping, the bartenders at the pool, dinning rooms esp Juan and Mr Lewis, Big up!!!! Thank you very much.

I called the other hotel and thanked them for bumping us, dwl :-))))). If it wasn't for them i maybe would have never been to Gran Bahia Principe.

A beautiful resort in an idyllic setting.

Wish I could add a half star.

PROs

The staff. Outstanding. Everyone was gracious and friendly, and proud of their resort. What wonderful people. We were upgraded (not sure why) and had Leroy Grant (who goes by "Grant") as our butler. Only four days into his current job he was incredible. He immediately made friends with our two daughters and our sun-in-law, and made my bride feel like a queen. If they're smart, they'll get him into the chain's management track before Marriott or Hilton steal him. The other "butler staff" was delightful, helpful and attentive as well. Everyone - bartenders, waitstaff, chambermaids, front desk, and the "green men" maintaining the grounds - couldn't have been nicer.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The pool is quite big and has a swim up bar. We didn't use it much because there was a bar about 30 feet from our recliners.

The spa is very nice as well.

There is a small sports bar, Ask Gregory to make rainbow shots.

Dinners in the ala carte restaurants were quite good to excellent. The buffet was average. The jerk chicken in the beach grill was very good. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly with the exception of one young lady in the Italian restaurant who may have just been having an off night.

Cons

Any facility in the islands needs constant maintenance. Our sleeping rooms were nice in design and decoration, but could are beginning to show their age and would benefit from some refurbishing. We had three rooms and couldn't open the sliding balcony door in one until we figured out the handles were installed backwards. Also, heavy rains one morning caused water to come under the sliding door in another of our rooms. Apparently some work was going on in the hallway because the carpeting was soiled with drywall dust. Also, the floor immediately outside the 7th floor elevator is uneven and easy to trip on. Should be easy to fix. All minor things - but they should be dealt with.

There are safes in the sleeping rooms but keys to operate them have to be obtained from the resort. Because we were upgraded, there was no charge but we heard that others were charged for theirs. A functional room safe is a standard amenity and those at Grand Bahia Principe should be modernized.

Other

While the resort had nothing to do with it, it rained each morning and all day one day. Someone explained the rain was caused by the trade winds in January and February. Don't know that's the case but might be worth looking into before you plan a trip. We had more than enough sun late morning/afternoons - and there's always rum! Beaches were nice but the wind had the red flags up so we weren't able to snorkel. Again, not the resorts fault but weather may be something you want to look into when planning a trip.

All in all it was a very nice place and we would go back. Kudos to the staff - especially Grant - who did their best to "Jamericanize" us. No problems, mon, only situations!

This is the fifth resort I've been to on the island. The buffet is always the same at all resorts.
I expected a lot for a five star resort but was quite disappointed. The party scene was average. The specialty restos lacked any local flavor which is what tourists want. If you're a first timer you might enjoy it. But there's very little Jamaican about it's quite generic. Get out and see this beautiful island try a bed and breakfast or rental property. The star rating often describes how many pools, bars, restos, gym basic amenities you would expect anyway... This is a DOMINICAN owned resort. Keep that in mind if you're looking for a taste of Jamaica. Oh and for a five star you would think WIFI was included. Not!

Room Tip: If you work up a sweat brushing your teeth like me be warned. This a huge resort. Lots of walking.

We had a great time at this resort! The food, pool, and people are fantastic! The rooms can use a little bit of updating, and we were on the main floor and had some issues with mosquitoes, but other than that this resort was the perfect get away we were hoping for. Only 45 minutes from Montego Airport, is reputable, and is well known by all major tour guides there.

The food at the buffet was quite good, lots to choose from and they mix it up every day. They don't make much at their jobs so tip them at the buffet and they will definitely treat you well. The service we got after leaving a few bucks felt like fine dining.

If you're into snorkeling this is the resort you want to be at - the reef comes right up to the beach! The beach isn't great... I prefer soft white sand and this was more like rocky pebbles, but the brightly colored fishes and sting rays swim only a few inches away from the shoreline, and there is plenty more to see from the snack bar including crabs and sting rays.

The tour companies know plenty about the excursions - climbing Dunn's falls is amazing but take the catamaran option instead of the bus. And if you have the time, go to Somerset Fallls, Port Antonio, and the blue lagoon. It's a full day but SO worth it.
