“anniversary magic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

We have just returned from a two week stay the Gran Bahia Jamaica and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful location. We chose a long haul trip to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the lovely friendly staff and excellent service made it a holiday in paradise. Our room was excellent and we were extremely well looked after. We opted for the golden club and I felt quite pampered by the extras and the turn down service. I enjoyed the food, especially in the beach bar thanks to the staff there for the friendly welcome. I appreciate that some guests were not entirely happy with the food in the a la carte restaurants. I would agree that it was a bit disappointing, but for the most part we were well catered for and we never went to bed hungry. It was lovely to meet and chat to staff who, though living in very different circumstances halfway across the world seemed to understand the irish sense of humour!!. Our very best thanks to the best rep in the world, First choice's Godfrey. He has a delightfully mischievious grin Godfrey has the best patter I have ever heard at a welcome meeting and he certainly can sell his beautiful country. And most of all Godfrey delivered. The few problems we had were instantly solved by Godfrey and he helped to make our holiday magical and above all fun. Whatever they are paying you Godfrey it is not enough.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

We stayed here Nov 3 to 10, 2012. There was 4 of us (my husband and I, and 2 guy friends) and it was all of our first time in Jamaica and we loved it!

ENTERTAINMENT was amazing! The staff were really fun and friendly. Antonia, Kevin and Cheeke were the highlight of our trip! We partied with them all day and all night – by the pool and at the club, Ska. We miss them a lot!

The shows at night were amazing too! We were very impressed with the Michael Jackson show. We could’ve sworn MJ himself was there! There was karaoke night which was highly entertaining.

FRONT DESK was okay. They were friendly but didn’t seem to care too much at our requests of problems in our room. They are understaffed at the busiest of times.

ROOMS were cleaned nicely and fridge was restocked everyday with pop and bottled water. Water is safe to drink in Jamaica. We tipped $2US everyday for house keeping. Our room had problems with the safe and didn’t get resolved. Our friends’ room AC didn’t work and had water leaking issues and a fridge that didn’t work. We asked to switch rooms and everything was okay.

FOOD was great! The buffet was really good but book your a la cartes early on in the trip to change it up as the buffet gets repetitive. Lunch buffets are served by the beach or the restaurant. George was our fave waiter. And say hello to Yaya the chef at Burger Principe, our late night eatery after the clubbing!

POOL was huge! There’s an area at the pool for families with children, the “party” area by the pool bar with was in front of the entertainment booth/area and a quiet area for those wanting space.

BEACH was nice. It was quiet and the water was calm. It is a man made beach but I liked it and couldn’t really tell. No one bothered us to buy anything, just the resort spa representatives trying to get business and the guy in the water selling sea shells! LOL!

OTHER THINGS:

If you’re interested in getting the “free gift if you tour the resort”, it’s the Privilege Club aka time share. We got suckered into it for 2.5 hours but the gift was really nice.

Lots of gift shops on the resort. Our fave was the Pirate Shop (in the entertainment area) with the best selection and best prices. Go check him out!

There’s a mix of people at this resort and suitable for all - singles, families, couples, groups and weddings. There are different parts of this big resort for everyone – kid areas, quiet areas and loud party areas.

The weather was great! We were really iffy going at this time of the year but we were fortunate. It rained once during the day and a few times at night. The night was comfortable and maybe a little chilly for my liking but a very light long sleeve or shawl came in handy.

There are a lot activities to do. There’s a schedule posted by the pool with different activities at different times.

We went on the Dunn’s River Falls tour ($95US) and it was great! Only 20 mins from the resort and it included a catamaran ride, snorkeling, climbing the falls (water socks a must) then back on the catamaran for all you can drink partying and dancing. No food was provided so buy something to eat before you head back on the catamaran.

I brought $300US to cover costs with the day trip, house keeping and souvenirs.

It really depends WHO you go with that will make your vacation an amazing one!

We had lots fun, and had a great time at this resort Oct 30 till Nov 12 / 2012, but would not go back, as this is a very big resort, and the beach is not great at all.The beach is on the side of the resort, not the front were the pool is. Hard sand, and lots of rocks, and coral. The staff are always willing to help, but the buffet service is almost non existent. You have to get you own coffee, juice, and for the whole time we were there never got any water served. Its like a free for all, at breakfast, but lunch, and dinner, are a bit better for service. The food is great, and the A LA Carts are very good. The rules suck 10:00 am to get a drink, anywhere. You have to wait until the music starts, around the pool, then you can go for a drink, at the bars. Can not take out a nice cup for coffee just outside to have a smoke, has to be a take out cup.Can not eat around the pool. When we were there the resort was maybe half full, and they still the were missing white wine, at one of the restaurants, and vodka, at the snack bar.People were complaining that there was no whiskey, or rye, on any of the bars. They ran out of jerk chicken twice, and had to eat jerk wings for two days. We were early for our check in, and were told that we would have to wait for a while, but I had an e-mail from Helema Gomez, telling us that she would take care of us when we got there. I do not know if this helped, but ten minutes later we told our room was ready, and thanks Helema, it was a nice room, with no problems. A great thank you to Devon, at the lobby bar, you are the best, and Jason, and Alicia, at the snack bar. For the best beach, and a nice resort I would go to the Catalonia Playa Moroma,as we have gone there three times, and we will be going back. I think for the best beaches, are in Mexico, but for fun people Jamica is it.

We stayed at the Gran Bahia Jamaica for one week in November for our honeymoon. The hotel is fantastic and by far the best we have stayed in. The service is good although Thomson's advertise this as a 24 hour all inclusive hotel which isn't the case. The a la carte restaurants were disappointing (slow service and poor food) we actually enjoyed the main buffet restaurants far more. The food was varied and plentiful. There is no excuse for going hungry in this hotel! The room was a deluxe with sea view and was very spacious. Overall a fantastic honeymoon and beautiful hotel. We'll definitely be returning to the Gran Bahia Principe Jamaica.

I travelled to Jamaica for summer 2012 with some friends and stayed here, I had a wonderful time. Me and my friend went to the ala carte restaurant and the food was mouth watering, we couldn't stop talking about it. We had the best room attendant ever. The front desk staff was very helpful and nice...thank you Loraine for your awesome personality, it was a pleasure meeting you. The beach was breath taking and the environment was very welcoming. Altogether I would recommend this wonderful place to anyone who want to have a wonderful time....

After doing thorough reviews on resorts to we have all agreed on the Gran Bahia Principe based on the reviews we read on this website. We stayed at this resort for 5 days from Nov 15-20 as a party of 4. I wish the hotel’s service wasn’t too restricted and they treated their guests equally (not separating white people from colored people) while delivering 5 star service and standards. All in all, I would stay back at this hotel if I am satisfied that they have improved a great deal in their service and quality of customer satisfaction. My comments are based on personal encounters and observations while on our stay at this resort. I/we am/are nowhere close to being picky. We had high expectations of this resort being a 5 star resort and were looking forward to getting better service for the price we paid. My reasons are as follows:

We found the hotel had way too many rules enforced by the management team. It felt as though we were in high school all over again because one had to abide by the rules before getting their way in the resort. Some of these were: cannot enter the buffet restaurant with your swim suit (have to cover your top and bottom which is somewhat understandable for the bottom part but not so much the swim suit top piece); cannot take food out from the restaurant to your room or elsewhere (mind you, room service sucks as it took them over 1 hour to deliver a salad and sandwich); cannot bring the ceramic coffee/tea cup on the patio for a smoke. Everything shuts down at 11 except for the sports bar and disco. The front lobby bar and patio close at 11 so if you wish to relax in that part of the hotel late at night over a drink or two you are definitely on your own. Too many rules are in place for an all-inclusive resort.
I wouldn’t upgrade to the diamond/privilege club as everyone gets treated the same eventually, eat in the same restaurant, have the same food and service. The grounds are beautiful but can do with a little extra maintenance and up keeping. Around the pools should be washed regularly from the many glasses of spilled drinks.

Service:
Some of the local staffs were very unpleasant to our group. It seemed to us that you get better service if you are White. There were several occasions at the swim up bar where we would ask for a drink and be acknowledged by the bar tenders who totally attended to the other white folks that went to the bar long after we got there and gave them their refreshments while we still waited. It was as though we had to remind the bar tenders a second time to give us our drinks. At the buffet restaurant, some of the staff didn’t seem too eager to work at all or they just didn’t appreciate colored people. Here’s why? On our third morning for breakfast we requested mimosas from the waitress who was attending to our table. She told us boldly that we had to get up and go to the mimosa bar located beside the buffet to make our own drinks. When we got at the mimosa bar we had to pour our champagne and orange juice to mix our drink. In the meantime, other guests were sitting at their tables being served mimosas and hot beverages. Requesting a beer at the lunch buffet took forever as the waiter had to go to the bar and get it. At other times they ran out of champagne at the buffet and had to go all the way to the front lobby bar to get more while we waited for our drinks which took forever. Mind you, they always received a tip for their service. We didn’t skimp on the tipping. On our second last day we encountered the most amazing waitress Yanique who just made things so much better. Her service was outstanding and she went out of her way to deliver excellence. Thank you Yanique.

The Snack/Jerk Bar by the beach is even worse. Went there for lunch one day, sat at a table for a while until the cleaner lady comes out of nowhere saying to us why we have to sit at the dirty table to eat and walked off. She could have simply cleaned it had she been doing her job properly. Some staffs move very slowly and deliver exceptionally bad service for a 5 star hotel or the hotel needs to employ more staff. Either way, it didn’t feel like a 5 star hotel for the service we got. We sat at our table for quite some time before someone came and picked up our plates. Also, had to get up and get our own beverage to drink, again. We didn’t mind getting our own drinks to drink as we are very independent people but it would have been nice if that service had been offered to us by the local staff. It was pretty much doing self service while there are staff members around who were attending to other “non-colored” guests. At the jerk bar we really enjoyed the hell-fire sauce so we went with a clean plastic glass to take some up to our room for room service later on. The chef saw us taking the sauce and insisted that we leave it behind because if we take it away there wouldn’t be enough for the following day. Mind you, it was a huge container of the sauce and each day it was filled. Still didn’t get his reasoning but it was plain rude and unnecessary.

Food:
It was good. Thought it needed more flavor and spices but there was always a variety to choose. Everyone raved about the Jerk Bar. It’s a must try. Some days they recycled the previous day’s meals. Some stations at the buffet restaurant served cold food, eg., the steamed vegetables. The A la Cartes were average. The Garden Grill a la carte was OK. Found it strange that they had a salad/appetizer buffet bar where we had to help ourselves. The portion size for the main course was tiny. The Japanese a la carte was also average. However, I appreciated the chef’s consideration for my requests as being vegetarian and not eating any chicken, beef or pork products. He prepared my meal first before proceeding to the meaty ones.

We did the romantic dinner for 4 out on the beach front by the Italian restaurant. It costs $100/couple for the extra special service. However, I must say the service didn’t 100% deliver. If you watch the advertisement on the TV in your room there is an extravagant setting outside on the patio to create that romantic atmosphere. None of that was present at our dinner. In addition, the service should come with bottle champagne service but we had only the bucket stand at our table and champagne poured by the waiter. The food was good – surf and turf with fresh lobster. I enjoyed my lobster meal.

24 hour snack bar??????? Where is that again? Still couldn’t find it in the resort.
The resort is very huge. At times it felt like walking two football fields to get from point A to point B. The entertainment section on the resort is not very lively after the night shows end at 11. There is where the gift shops are also located. Souvenirs are very pricy on the resort and not worth your money. Simple things like local hand bands cost an arm and leg ($5-10 US).

Beach:
It’s very rocky on the beach. The water is too calm and doesn’t give off the beach like atmosphere. At times it seemed dirty and yet people swam in it. A few folks were stung by jellyfish while wading in the water. I don’t think the water is deep enough to swim. We spent most of our time at the pool which definitely made up for the beach. The pools could do with a thorough weekly cleaning. The tiles were slippery on the corners and floor.

Upon landing into Montego Bay, the resort is quite a distance from the airport. It seemed to us as if the drive was never-ending after sitting in the bus for over 1.5 hours. The tour operator (signature vacations) could have done better with their bus selection as the bus was very old and had poor air-conditioning. Nevertheless, it took us to our destination spot which was located in the middle of nowhere amongst a forest. Arrival at the hotel was smooth. We were greeted with a very nice tropical refreshing drink as we approached the lobby bar for our check-in instructions. This was apparently 'low-season' for the hotel. Our requests by the tour operator were granted. However, I wouldn't stay in the 'new' wing as there is still construction going on. Had a few encounters in our section such as construction noise (banging, drilling) late in the afternoon, leaking AC pipes which overflowed and flooded our room. DO NOT sleep on the big cushions they place on the beds. Ours smelled stink and very frowsy while the phone made the smell even worse. I would walk with extra Lysol wipes to clean it. The toilets are dirty inside the bowls. Ours had muck under the bowl rim which was absolutely gross.

Room Tip: Stay away from the new building as they are still doing construction and you hear banging and drilli...

We stayed at this hotel in August this year.
We were a party of 7.
The hotel looks like it does in its pictures, nice pool and we stayed in the rooms with the kingsize beds, which were very nice.
The Hotel staff were all very nice and friendly.
The only negative thing that we found here was the food. The food was of good quality but it was always cold. I complained to the resturant manager and also one of the hotel manager's about the food being cold but nothing was done. And it was a shame as the food would have been great if only warm.
To me the Managers at this hotel are letting the customers and their own staff members down.
We will not be returning.
