We had an absolutely fantastic trip to the Royal Decameron. We were celebrating our 25th anniverary and this was the first trip we had taken overseas. Lucky for us we had checked out this website first so we were prepared with some of the activities and suggestions. The atmosphere was unbelievably relaxing and exciting at the same time--you could have as much entertainment as you wanted! There were activities and entertainment at the main bar/pool area throughout the day and evening. Meals at the buffet are open air style and you could listen to the music and the surf while you ate overlooking the ocean. The watersports were fantastic--we took advantage of them every day! We went snorkling, water skiing, sailing on the Hobi-cat, and took in the glass bottom boat. Mr. Big, Fabian, and Nick were a few of the lifeguards that went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. But, it is suggested that you go down to the "Beach Fun Center" when they open at 8:00 in the morning because the activities fill up fast. We chose to only take one trip--the half day to Dunns River Falls, Wasaii Pottery, Fern Gully, Botanical Gardens, and "shopping". We enjoyed this day immensly but realize that a half a day was about 7 hours but well worth it! We specifically wanted to see Fern Gully and Dunns River Falls as well as shop but we did find that we enjoyed the gardens more than we thought. Our guide, David, was very informative and we learned a lot. The Pottery company was very impressive too. Of course, Dunns River Falls was awesome. My husband walked the falls and I followed along side the group on the steps and observation platforms to take pictures. The tips we had read about bringing our own aqua shoes really helped--a family with us had to rent five pairs and that added to their cost. This is a must do. The shopping was interesting. We didn't have much time on this trip--but is was enough. There was a mix of regular touristy shops and a market down the street. It was a little nervewracking at the market but we were firm and it was o.k.--but we didn't follow the advise we had read from another traveler to not say your name--my husband inadvertantly said my name and sure enough the vendor brought out a bracelet with my name woven into it. Clever but I am afraid it didn't work this time. One thing that was nice was that there were two or three vendors each evening around the main bar at the Royal Decameron. They were classier and were not allowed to come to you but you had the opportunity to view what they had. And they expected you to bargain with them but it was not done in a pushy manner. We had spoken to some people from another resort that said the vendors were on their beach daily and that it was very bothersome. So, we really liked the way the Royal Decameron took care of their vactioners. We stayed in a Garden Delux Cabana--it was great. Large in size and clean. WE spent very little time there so it was awesome! People before had complained about the airconditioning. It is a window unit in an open cabana--if you are just smart about it and keep the bathroom door closed and the lights off during the day, the room stayed cool. If you got hot, you only had to jump in the shower(which had great pressure) then you were fine! The food was unique--but there were lots of choices on the buffet. They always had fresh fruit and bread and other things you could try--but that is what vactioning is all about, trying new things. They did have a snack bar open from 12-5 as well as four servings at the buffet each day -- breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night snack. They also had two restaurants that you need to make reservations for--again those reservations need to be made at the front desk around 8 because they fill up fast. Probably the only thing that was a bit of a bother was the hour and 45 minute ride to Montego Bay--but it was in an air conditioned bus and not so bad. This trip was great -- we plan to go back next year and take our family.
