My wife and I read all the reviews and were very excited about our trip to Ambiance. We left the kids at home for a 3 day, adults-only getaway. We are both teachers and don't really enjoy pretentious, over-priced places so this resort sounded perfect. I will start with the positive, our trip was a very inexpensive. We booked through Cheap Caribbean and the entire trip was less than $1000 for both. Joseph, the omelet man, made fantastic omelets and is a truly nice guy. Phillip and Junior are great bartenders and very entertaining. The drinks flow freely almost all the time. Now the bad. We expected the resort to be dated, it was, but we expected more from the staff and the activities. The staff was usually friendly but far from superb. Barnswell the bartender is grumpy. There was always food available, unfortunately it was largely the same and not great. The main course at dinner would change each evening but the sides were mainly the same. There is only so much you can make for breakfast and the omelets were excellent. The activities were almost non-existent except for one afternoon of cricket. I did enjoy the cricket lesson. We met several people that have been going to the resort for years and they said that the food and activities have gotten worse. There are no longer scuba lessons in the pool or a glass bottom boat as others told us there used to be. The "gym" is a disgrace. It consists of 2 bikes that don't work, 1 treadmill that doesn't work, a weight machine that dates back before the dinosaurs, and a stereo. The stereo works properly. I didn't expect a Gold's Gym but I thought I would at least be able to work up a sweat and loosen up my back as the king size bed in our room was a torture chamber. Our backs were both sore after the second night. If you just want to relax by the pool and drink this place is adequate. We found that after a couple days we were bored, so we took a trip to Ocho Rios. This was a $24 mistake. If you have been to Tia Juana you don't need to go to Ocho Rios. The street salesmen are very aggressive and don't take no thank you for an answer. We had very smelly men follow us for 50 yards trying to sell us something several times. I guess some people may enjoy this but we didn't. If we were to go to the Caribbean again we would spend more for a resort that has more activities and restaurants as part of their all-inclusive package. I would only recommend this resort for very short stays.
