This review is for my 10 day / 9 night trip to Club Ambiance in June 2008. My wife and I went with another couple. We are a middle-class couple that could afford a more expensive resort but decided to save some money and do more excursions. I’ll breakdown some of the specs of the resort so you know what you actually get.
Staff - 95% are very friendly, but most are not very helpful. If you ask a question that is more than where’s the pool or what’s in a drink, you probably will not get the answer. The front desk women during the first few days were very rude and gave me a very hard time during check-in because they claimed my signature wasn’t the same as on my license. The bartenders were all nice except one and most of the waiters were very friendly.
It was very frustrating getting info on excursions as the person who sets them up is there at various times during the day but leaves for good before 3pm. I found it easier and cheaper to go out to the street and get a taxi.
Rooms – They are dated but clean. A fresh coat of paint would do wonders for the appearance. The showers had hot water and the air conditioning got cold. Our air conditioning did break once but they did a good job of fixing it in a reasonable time. They come in the morning and take all of your towels, then the maid doesn’t come around until 3-4pm and it makes that early afternoon shower very tough. We ended up hiding towels or taking extra pool towels to use for our showers.
Food / drink – The food was decent. Every meal on this resort is a buffet except for the burger grill and a special dinner which costs $25 a person. The breakfast buffet each morning was pretty good. Lunch buffet was a little weak but there was always one edible item. Dinner buffet was solid every night. They tried a couple different themes like an Italian theme, etc. which were pretty good, not five star but not bad. The burger grill was open noon til five pm. Problem is by 3 or 4 they would run out of burgers most days. The $25 five course dinner was OK. The steak was very good but the lobster tail was small and not cooked well and the other courses ranged from decent to disappointing. It was worth doing once. The part that most disappointed me was there was a good amount of fruit at every buffet, but it wasn’t real good. I went to Jamaica in December (different resort) and then fruit was great. It was either the time of year or the resort.
The alcohol is clearly bottom shelf! The only beer choice is Red Stripe draft and the liquor is the lowest quality. Some of their rum drinks were actually pretty good, but being a vodka drinker – I had trouble choking down their vodka. We actually went to the local grocery store (amount a ½ mile walk) and bought some other beers and some good liquor to drink in the room. They have an outside bar that was open from about noon and closed the second it turned 11pm. I was mad the one night a few other couples and us were sitting at the outside bar and they closed it up and vanished without asking us if we would like one final round. At 11pm they open their attempt at a dance club. It is lame and most nights very few people were in there. The bar by the pool was open early but closed up about 4:30.
Entertainment – Very lousy!! They claim to have an entertainment staff, but they didn’t do much. Beach volleyball happened once and wasn’t real good as the sand is all little rocks and I cut up my feet pretty bad. Most of the events listed on the board each day just never happened. They put on a “show” each night, The bands were mediocre and I think it was the same band for most of the nights. They tried a talent show that was so bad it was almost funny. They did a karaoke night which seemed to be going good but after about 90 minutes, they shut down the bar and ended it to leave everyone with nothing to do or drink. They have a pool table and a ping pong table which was most of my entertainment. They also had an outdoor pool table that was severely crooked. The mini-gym had a weight machine and some free weights but the treadmill was broken and the bikes had no tension.
Beach / Pool – Three little manmade beaches with very rocky sand with water that only got up to 4 feet high and full of seaweed. One was closed off for the entire ten days we were there. We tried the beach once and never went again. The pool was decent but much better than the ocean. The nice thing about the resort is it never was crowded and always was room at the pool.
In summary – If you are going to Jamaica in order to go different places each day and you just need a homebase, or if you just want to lay by the pool every day and you are not a big drinker or you can’t afford a better resort – I would clearly recommend Club Ambiance. If you can afford better and want more from your resort, I would say pick a different resort.
