“Can't wait to return! Outstanding resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

We just returned from Jewel Runaway Bay. We stayed from March 21-27, 2013. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, ages 12 & 15. We traveled with another family of 4 with kids ages 13 & 16. We can't wait to return next year! I am thrilled to write this review because my friend and I searched these reviews in great detail before we booked our trip!

Just a note, getting through immigration, and getting luggage does take longer than you would hope. Once we had our luggage we did wait about 30 minutes on the bus before we left for the resort waiting for all the arrivals. Our bus made 1 stop before arrived at Jewel. So on to the resort!

We were greeted in a beautiful open air lobby by big warm smiles, and drinks for our family, including fruit punch for the kids. Next we were offered cool towels to freshen up. A guest services person sat with us in the lobby, appointed with beautiful furniture and checked us in while we enjoyed their welcome to the Jewel. We were checked in quickly and our luggage was brought along by a friendly bellman. We did change rooms, as our first room only had 2 twin beds and we needed 2 double beds. We had also requested that we have a room next door to our friends. The next day our friends were able to move to a second floor room near ours---again the staff were very accommodating! We did have a chance to see some of the rooms in building 3 and these seemed a bit larger than ours but we really loved our second floor location that was near the tennis courts and very quiet.

The resort is beautiful! Coconut palms, flowers and wonderfully maintained grounds. There are hammocks throughout the property and lots of places to relax in and take in the view. There were always staff working on raking, or pruning the grounds. There was also always some improvements going on. Fresh paint everywhere, a nice golden color with a soft sea green trim and even a new set of foldable doors at the coral terrace stage were put in while we were there. They were also creating a beautiful water & fire fountain that should be done soon. Across the road was a beautiful golf course that you can either walk to our they will take you over on a golf cart. Near the golf course is also the "Red Ruby Ranch" also part of the resort. They have horses here and a great play area for kids of all ages. This is also where they have laser tag (ages 12 & older), be sure to bring long pants for this game. They offer this 3 times during the day. They have an entire outdoor layout for this laser tag, lots of obstacles to hide behind and far different than anything our kids have done here in the states---they loved it. They also had an outdoor movie and a bonfire at the ranch one night complete with s'mores. Our kids were thrilled when they went over for the movie and when they asked the staff if they could play laser tag the staff just said ---yah mon. The nite tag went on for 2 hours. During the day the next day the kids also got to do archery at the ranch.

Everyday a long list of activities is posted so there is something to do every half hour. A great mix of family friendly games. The entertainment staff were enthusiastic and really encouraged people to play. They gave out Jewel money if you played and at the end of our trip we were able to turn it in for prizes. There were wacky pool games, trivia, horseshoes, bocce ball, cricket, jamaican baseball, beach and pool volleyball, ping pong, pool, checkers, basketball, tennis, golf, tye dye(bring your own shirt or buy one in the souvenir shop), and arts n crafts with Clive--my daughter made a beautiful painted shell. One nite we had a dive-in movie (an Ice Age movie so great for all ages) near the infinity pool and a bonfire on the beach and more smores. We also did the hobie cat and the glass bottom boat rides. They had kayaks but we never found time to fit these in. The snorkeling right off the shore was awesome. Delroy took us out snorkeling one afternoon and it was rough so he took us again the next morning and we saw beautiful coral and fish right outside the swimming area. They also can arrange for snorkeling trips by boat and scuba for an extra fee. We hope to try scuba next time we go. The beach swimming area is beautiful with soft sand and crystal clear water....Great for swimming and great for sand castles. The beach is long enough for a nice walk and you can walk next door as well. There is also a beautiful chapel right on the beach.

The pools were great, one with a volleyball net and a swim area and the other with a swim up bar and infinity edge. The swim up bar area did seem to be a hub of games and activities. All pool areas are close to the beach so you can enjoy the awesome sea view from all locations. We got to do reggaesize with Omar, this was great fun. Getting a pool towel was a bit challenging and we did place flip flops on chairs every morning so that we could get a nice place to sit near the infinity edge pool. I do think they could use more lounge chairs near the pools. There seemed to be lots of lounge chairs at the beach, it would be nice if there were more hammocks down at the beach and maybe a few more near the pool. They did have cabanas that you could rent for the day. There is another pool area in front of the waterfront building that seemed nice but smaller and had a large terrace and hot tub area. This pool area did not seem to get used much while we were there. There is also a Spa in the center of the property with an outdoor hot tub. We did not use the spa but the were staff roaming to ask if you wanted to use the Spa.

The food was amazing and plentiful. We ate at all the restaurants. The Japanese restaurant is great and a fun experience as they cook in front of you. We also enjoyed the buffets at all meals there were many choices and lots of fruits and vegetables of course desserts. Breakfast was our favorite with fresh omelettes and amazing french toast cooked fresh. Eggs any way you want. There was food for all tastes. The open air terrace was shaded and breezy, a wonderful place to enjoy the view of the beach and ocean while trying some great meals. Our kids loved all the food and also loved the ice cream machine. The jamaican grill was a great spot for snacks of jerk chicken, french fries, hamburgers, popcorn and nachos. My only suggestion is that we would have loved to have some homemade salsa with the nachos to complete the snack list.

The drinks at all the bars were tasty and seemed to be well mixed. There was a drink menu so you could try new drinks. Our kids also loved the non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas. The staff were always friendly and attentive.

We did book one trip to Dolphin Cove, about 20 minutes away to swim with dolphins, and snorkel with stingrays. This was a great park with lots to do and see. Our Apple representative, Phyllicia was wonderful and was available at the resort daily to see how things were going. She was a great resource of information during our stay.

The entertainment was fun and family friendly. We never did stay up past 10:30pm so I cannot comment on the late nite events. There were many listed. The entertainment we did see was great, steel drums, a jamaican group, acrobats and jugglers to name a few, Our kids did visit the teen room that has video games, pool table and foose ball and more slushy drinks. Our kids met others here nitely. There were also computers here to access games or the internet. My only suggestion on the kids programs overall is to list the name of the "go to person" for the teens daily on the board so the kids know who to go to for the different events. They did a nice job of announcing all the activities during the day. At night we did not see the teen disco(9-11pm) up and running. We went by on several nights at 9pm but there was not anybody there. We did not ask anyone about it as our kids found other things to do, ping pong, etc but if the disco had been up and running by 8:45pm or so I know our kids would have loved to "hang out" there. It did look like a cool place and I can only assume if there had been music they would have loved this activity too.

So we had a great week! The staff were always smiling and having fun. The concierge desk always asking how our stay was going and ready to tend to any need. We had one issue with our shower door but this too was tended to within an hour of reporting it. We loved that the resort blended in with the surrounding landscape and that it was only 200 or so rooms and not a "high rise" building. We felt safe letting our kids run around the resort and have the freedom from their parents yet, it was small enough that we knew we could easily find them. Our room was simple and comfortable, we only slept here so just knowing it was clean, and the beds fluffy was what we were looking for. We loved the laid back atmosphere of the staff, the caribbean decor and the casual feel of the resort. There is not any area that feels "stuffy" just a great place to enjoy a week of Jamaican hospitality, warm seas and an amazing property with great activities.

We know that next year they intend to build a waterpark for this resort. I am not sure exactly where they are planning to put it but this should be a great addition to create another area that will be great for kids of all ages.

We are hoping to come back next year and bring some more of our family friends with us to enjoy this slice of paradise. Thank You Jewel Runaway Bay for creating a wonderful family resort!

Room Tip: We had room 1200, buiding 1--2nd floor. This is near the tennis courts. Our room faced the empty l...

In all honesty, the resort needed a lot of work. Scott (GM) assured me that the resort was on a trajectory up, not down as my family and I thought. This is our family of 6's third straight year in Jamaica. I give it the highest marks because the service was so spectacular. Blew me away. Service is usually not so high on my priority, but this place was a standout. Never met so many friendly Jamaicans! Whatever issue we had (there were a few), got taken care of immediately (not Jamaican time), and in a friendly manner. I give maintenance / room appeal a solid D.Both of our rooms were very drab. Scott assured me they're working on that. We will see how honest Scott is next year, when we go back!
The food was great. Here again, not high on my priority list usually, but it was so good I had to mention it. If you live near a metropolis, forget the Japanese place. The buffet is much better. Expect a very long wait at the island outdoor beach grill. This was very disappointing, as our expectations were much higher from the other resorts we've been to. The rooms. Lets say if you didn't mind the decor of your college dormitory on check in day, you won't be disappointed. We spend very little time there anyway, since the beach here is so spectacular. Scott promised rubber wheels are on order, so I'll be looking for a responses to this in another review. The kitchen is separate from the dining room. Guess what time they bring stuff back and forth in the middle of the night? Concrete and plastic wheels sound like an earthquake every few hours. Both the main pools were wonderful and fun in their own ways. Lots of kid / family activities for lots of thousands of cheesy dollars that would overcome your vacation if you let it( think chucky cheese coupons). Overall, great time. Like I said, we would go back again, especially with Scott at the helm. I always say words are cheap. Lets see the results next year!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for staying with us at Jewel Runaway bay as well as your feedback.
I have sent off your review to my management team to tackle all that has been mentioned. We took over the property in June and it is an uphill battle with renovationg and retraining but one that we are winning.
We look forward to your return.

We were a group of 6 and this was our third visit to Jamaica, but our first at the Jewel. We cannot say enough good things about the staff here at the Jewel-Miguel and Troy on the beach, Barbara in the front office, AJ the watersports Manager to name a few-everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The beach is amazing (previously stayed twice at Braco Village-the beach is far superior) the snorkelling was awesome-saw 2 dolphins while on our glass bottom boat tour too! Food was incredible-drinks were great-and the Silver Birds Steel Orchestra show on Sunday night was THE best vacation entertainment we have ever seen-we came home with one of their CDs! I also had the pleasure of reconnecting with my niece and nephew from Germany who were also vacationing in Jamaica-I bought them a day pass and they also enjoyed their time at the Jewel.
The rooms could use a refresh, but they were clean, comfortable and the housekeeping staff are real gems-big ups to the hard working staff who put in 24/7 effort in to making sure folks have an enjoyable vacation and want to return to Jamaica. We love the Island so much, we plan on retiring there within the next 5 years-mainly because of the PEOPLE-thanks so much to the staff at the Jewel for a memorable vacation-see you next year!

We arrived on March 15th 2013 & the ride from the airport was appx 1.5 hre and very pleasant. We had reserved an oceanfront junior suite & had requested second or third floor (was not interested in having the plunge pool and don’t regret it). We were given room #1025 which meant: 10= Bldg, 2= second floor and 5 is the room # = 1025. Room was super large, furniture a little old fashion to my taste but in great condition & the bed was comfortable. Lots of room & drawers to put your stuff away. The bathroom was just the perfect size with huge shower complete with massage jets. The lighting is quite insufficiant in the room, at night is was quite dark; we took one of the nightstand bedroom lamps and placed it on desk in the living area because there were absolutely no lights there. One or two more lights would be great and our A/C was miserable, they tried to fix it but after a few hours it would get quite noisy again.

The balcony are nice & large, a wonderful place to relax after a full day.

The food is overall excellent, we never had any complaints, lots of veggies & salads, cheeses. The Italian restaurant was wonderful (went twice) Japanese is very good too, the pizzeria was delicious & the fast food place (hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and much more) was very good.
No long line ups at any time of the day at the buffet.

The Nightly entertainment in the buffet area was one of the best we have seen in a long time.

You must take the glass bottom boat tour (free), that was crazy amazing with the 200 feet wall etc., and we even saw a dolphin & many wonderful things. The morning people saw a sea turtle. Lots of amazing creatures & other things. The snorkeling tour from the hotel (15$) is worth your money, you will not be disappointed.

The golf is just across the street and it looked beautiful. We don’t golf.

Entertainment staff is excellent. They do a lot of activities between the pools area and the beach so everyone knows what is going on. It was quite lively.

The only 'complaints or suggestions’ we would have are:

#1 Not enough long chairs at the beach or at the pools. Many chairs are broken & should be destroyed.

#2 Towels are given away freely which causes problems because people put towels on chairs at the beach and at the pool (double reservation on chairs) and they show up when they feel like it, if they do. Or people leaving for the day leave their towels on the chairs so you don’t know if the chairs are available. They should have large baskets a little everywhere so people can drop the towels off or at least have some control and not hand them out freely or get way more chairs.

#3: Outdoor showers are located in the weirdest areas, no wonder the pools are full of sand, you have to stand in the sand when showering? That is when you can actually find a shower. Some people were rinsing the sand off their feet in the pool and you can’t blame them.

#4 The Oceanfront Suites (Area/Bldg#10) should only be for adults. Mostly honeymoon suites etc. Don't need the screaming kids/parents. The outdoor area is extremely echo with all the cement walls for the plunge rooms and the bldg is shape like and L so when you have loud kids, it will drive anyone crazy. We felt sorry for the new guesses that just arrived on our last full day because we didn’t have that problem all week till then. These are expensive rooms so you expect a little more.

#5 A little more lighting in the Suites. I do enjoy dark but not when you are trying to get ready to go out at night.

Overall we consider this place to be one of the top vacation places we had the pleasure of visiting and we would go back without any hesitation because the staff/people, food, entertainment & scenery was just wonderful and the locals that are on the beach selling are really nice and they dont bother you if you just tell them that you are not interested.

We just had our daughter's wedding at Jewel Runaway Bay and they did a fantastic job!! Victoria was perfect to work with and made the day fantastic! We had 42 of our friends and family join us there and the ceremony was on the beach and then we had a reception over at the golf course. The meal was delicious and the DJ did a wonderful job. I couldn't say enough about the terrific job they did and how easy it was for us. They took care of every detail from the horse & buggy ride for the arrival of the bride & groom, our transportation over to the golf course and anything else that we needed to make for a perfect wedding. Big thanks to everyone!!!!
We have been to BRB about 10 times and even had been to Jamaica Jamaica before it was BRB. This was our first trip to the new Jewel and loved all the improvements they have made. Everyone thought that the food was improved over BRB and the new pizza oven was wonderful. The caramelized onion and goat cheese pizza at night was the best!!!! It's amazing how they did so many improvements to the resort while still keeping the resort running so perfectly. Also loved that the beach grille is open until 7AM which is great when you need a late night snack.
Loved that some of the faces from past years are still there. Delroy at the watersports, Dwayne from the entertainment and many of the same bartenders and wait staff from the past were great to see again. BiBip was a fun addition to the entertainment team. Everyone that works here is so friendly and nice and that is what brings people back year after year.
Omar had some great exercise classes that many of our guests loved to do to work off all the good food that they ate.
You have to take a painting class from Clive who is so nice. I always love to buy his painted items and bring them home every year.
Keisha is always a delight and always willing to help when needed.
I got to meet Scott who is such a nice guy and who is doing a fabulous job with the place. You are so helpful on TA before our vacation with answering any questions that we have. Thanks for everything!!!!
I was so pleased with our week there and how many of our guests who have never been to Jamaica before loved the place as much as we did!!!!!!

Room Tip: The resort is such a perfect size that no room is that far away from everything.

I just came back from a 5 day 4 night stay at Jewel Runaway Bay. We had an terrific time. The staff there couldn't be nicer. It was like coming home to family. The food was great. The drinks were plentiful. Kadron and Ohdane Lemon were two of the bartenders. They were fantastic. The nightly entertainment was well worth watching. I don't know where they got that energy. I will definitely be back again and again. It was worth every penny.

We stayed at the Jewel March 21-26 and I only have good things to stay! it was our first trip to Jamaica.
when we arrived we were given a room facing the courtyard, the Front Desk manager said it would be loud and because we had lilttle kids, we could try and switch our rooms the next day. It was very loud; however our kids slept like rocks because they were so tired o we decided to keep tje room. If you have kids, try and get a room away from the courtyard. Our 2 year old got sick the first night there and our House Keeping staff member Petrona was fantastic and helped us so much during our stay! She created towel animals for the kids everyday and they loved it! SHe checked on our son everyday to see how he was feeling and also made sure our room was clean before we brought the kids in for a nap at 1pm. The staff at the Buffet was amazing. We did the buffet everyday because it was easier, but we had had enough by Sunday, if you stay here, make sure to try other restaurants and reserve early for the Jade, it was completely booked!
The kids camp was amazing! We took advantage of it twice and Mishka and Charlene took great car of our kids! We were so worried about leaving them with strangers but they loved it!
the beach is small but awesome! My husband and son went out on a boat tour and said it was great! All the reviews here about the staff are spot on! Barbara from the Front Desk Mgmt team was such a nice lady and rally made us feel welcome. The Steel drum band on sunday and dinner on the beach monday were both great! Jerk pork is amazing!
There was some construction going on at the fountain just outside our room which was very loud during nap time for the kids but we do understand the resort is undergoing renovations.
Thank you to all the satff at the Jewel for a great experience!
