Certainly the stay at the Trident was very interesting. The place had certainly seen better days, but on the whole our 5 days were quite enjoyable in June 2003. The rooms were quite spacious and it was wonderful to see the peacocks wonder up to the verandah.
Food was relatively expensive and given the short taxi ride to Port Antonio, we prefered to eat outside the hotel. There is a small cove, which was great for the kids and a swimming pool.
There's no access to a television or even a kettle in the room. The service was efficient without being too spectacular.
Portland provided us with a glimse of the real non commercialised Jamaica. The Trident is a good place to chill out, but also to access some good beaches, Blue Lagoon, Boston, Port Antonio, Long Bay etc.
The Trident is unique in that it is as though it is in a time warp. The hotel kind of fits in with the laid back non-touristy character of Portonio. I'm sure there'll be many more modern hotel than the Trident, but few will be able to match its charm and location.
I'll certainly, be going back to Trident.
