“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

After reading all the negtives about this hotel. I was a little concerned after i had booked for a three week stay for a surprise for my wifes 50th. I write this from our balcony of room 27 just as our first week has ended. On arrival at around 10.30pm we were welcomed by royston and the lady on front desk. Both very helpfull. Royston showed us to our room switched on the air con and left to unpack. The next morning we had breakfast at the hotel, there was plenty of choice and reasonably priced as is the lunch and evening meals. The security staff are all good and very helpful as are all of the bar staff. As for dogs roaming around the hotel have two that cause no problem to anyone, yes there are other dogs roaming around again causing no nuisanse to anyone. No matter were you go in the world you will always get animals roaming. If people dont like animals dont go away. So reading some of the reviews before we arrived i think are misjuged. I think some people want to pay for a reasonably cheap holiday and expect 5* luxury. We would have no essitation in booking this hotel in the future. We still have just under two weeks left of this vacation and really enjoying every bit of it. Phil moran from England

We stayed at Shields in January 2014.

1st Impression - The lobby was rundown. We get to the desk, and while they had a record of us registering. They had no record of us paying our deposit. (which we did) It was a little frustrating. We ended up double paying the deposit and the rest of the balance.

Mrs. Shields was very nice and apologetic later in the week and offered us credit at the bar and restaurant since we paid extra.... The only issue is: We had to schedule our meals? When we go to Negril, we pack a backpack for the day and take off. We dont really make plans. I am not sure why we couldnt have just run a tab at any time. This lead to confusion one morning, where we had assumed that a breakfast we were eating was part of our credit at the restaurant and bar. We left a 500JA tip and took off for the day. The reason why we didnt wait to confirm this, was because the waitress was nowhere to be be found. The restaurant and wait staff at Shields took "Island Time" to a whole new level. I feel bad, as the waitress ended up paying for our breakfast... Which we reimbursed her for, and then some..

This led to us not using up all of our credit, because frankly, on a short trip... There's far better options to eat throughout Negril.

The room was OK... They were charging 100 a night during high season, but I have stayed at other budget hotels for the same or less, and the rooms were better.

The room really would benefit from some new paint and some updated curtains and bed covers.

I have been to Negril 8 times since May 2012. So I am a frequent visitor.

I cant say that Shields will be at the top of my list, unless there is a great special going on.

I stayed here with a friend for 10 days during the high season.

Let's start with the pro's

- Staff were very welcoming and we were showed to our room quickly and efficiently.

- Rooms were clean and spacious for the most part (only 1 issue see cons). We were located on the ground floor near the bar and beach which was handy as we were always popping back and fourth for various reasons.

- Bathrooms were modern enough, water was hot and although pressure was low at times it did the job intended.

- Cleaners where lovey, chatty and helpful. They did a good job cleaning and replacing towels.

- bar staff were great, drinks were strong and service was as fast as can be be for Jamaica!

- Security were good, always present and always encouraging us to keep safe and use common sense.

- the lady at the desk was helpful when I had a banking problem and allowed me to use he phone at the front desk for free. I felt this was very kind and I was very grateful as I could have ended up stranded had she not

- the front desk where also helpful when a tour bus we had arranged was very late and kept us informed of when it would finally arrive

Now for the cons

- Cockroaches!!! We noticed a huge cockroach in our room, I was very surprised as it seemed clean, and was cleaned daily. We complained to the front desk and where moved to a new room. However we where moved to a room that opposite the previous room and connected by a locked door. I knew that we would experiance the same problem here and low and behold we noticed another giant cockroach a couple of days later. By this time, we decided to brave it to the end as the staff were becoming less helpful and the security guard was useless (he killed to roach with a shoe!!) This issue really did impact negatively on our trip as we were always on high alert for the critters. Yuck!

- The pool was not enticing at all. It had a green tinge to it and we didn't even bother to dip a toe in. Luckily you have the beautiful 7 mile beach centermeters away so it was no problem mon'

- The hotel was very far from everything. Right at the end of stretch of beach. It took us a long time to walk the beach everyday and although at first this was okay, it became tiresome. Our legs where always sore.

- the food was average at best. Overpriced if you ask me, but not the worst. The staff were wonderful though.

All and all a good stay, but we wouldn't return as there are much better options along the beach. I do believe we got what we paid for though. shields is a cheap option so expecting luxury would be foolish.

I have stayed at Shields several times over the years and always feel like I am a welcomed guest! Even folks who do not stay at Shields find themselves there, drawn by the good vibes! The staff is professional, well trained and fun to be around. The security is great and not invasive.
I want to rant about the lunch I ordered the other day. It was called Rasta Fish and it was a whole red snapper, stuffed with calaloo and other yummy things and then served in a coconut milk based sauce of carrots, scotch bonnet, herbs and spices. I can't remember when I've eaten anything better anywhere!!! If you go, ask Janice to cook this for you! You'll be glad you did.

We stayed in one of the kitchenette rooms and it had everything we needed. Rooms were nice and clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Security guards were very good at keeping the grounds secure. Very nice pool, great little bar with good food. The only down side we found to this hotel is its location. It is still part of the "7 mile beach" but its right at the end of it. Would be a little nicer to have been situated in more of the action.

We spent 3 weeks in this beautiful villa 2012-13. The staff and owner were superb. The room too. If you want a studio with kitchenette, book early. There are only two. But they are worth it as Jamaica is expensive. It's worth it though. The area is typically carribean. Air&water about 25-30°C. Perfect for us. It's a developing country so be prepared for an experience. The people are so open and hearty. Hustlers are just earning their existence but accept a clear no thanks. So no problem. A car is necessary if you want to see something. It's a big and beautiful island.

It's a middle class villa and we can highly recommend it. No luxury but clean and safe. There was never a problem with the locals in Negri even at nightl. Very nice and helpful. Fish market very close. Shopping in the supermarkets. Everything else is highly touristic. It is typically loud and jamaican. At least sometimes. Sometimes water pressure problems like showering evenings. Beach is great. Lots of shady tress too. If there are any problems, the staff really does their best.

HAPPY HOLIDAY
