Last year I went to Mexico, RIU Playacar, where it was good but sea wasn't quite enough to enjoy it fullest. This year I decided to go to Jamaica where Montego bay was described as a quiet place with beautiful beaches. It was my first time in RIU Negril (Club Hotel), and it was arranged by my travle agent through Apple vacation. Apple representatives in St.Louis were visible and greeted us. In Jamaica, Montego bay airport we were directed to buses and then, after tips were collected, waited for bus to arrive. It took about 2 hours to get to the hotel, partly because of the extended family on the bus that started their "beer" fest during the trip and asked the driver to stop at the store to buy drinks (even if at the resort they are free and wait was only 1 hour). At the hotel nobody was greeting us and you have to just go to the service counter and wait until somebody will talk to you (not for long though). We were given rooms on a third floor, no elevator, with a kid in a stroller and my mother in-law, can't believe there was no other choice since hotel wasn't full at all. Only next day we were moved to a different building on a first floor. I had to move all the stuff myself or wait an hour for somebody to do it so I did it myself. Extra workout is always good thing, especially with all the food they have.
Later I heard stories that if you give $20 at front desk you can get the room you want right away., no personal experience to verify that.
Common problem in jamaica this year is the sopa, more exactly lack of it. I had to ask service desk to get some and it was the only bar of soap I had for the next 4 days (had to to take it with me to the other room since all promises to bring it there from 3 different people were worthless). Same thing with shampoo, body wash, wash cloth. I asked for air freshener since my room had a strond smoke odor but nobody did anything. People from other resorts complained about shortage of beach towels which we had plenty.
TV in one room wasn't woprking well, in another room had no remote.
Tips doesn't change much what you get so give them as you wish without hope that you'll get what you need.
This hotel beach is not a part of 7km Negril beach, has less sand but good enough. Water was calm an clear, you can swim and watch sometimes fish under water. Last couple of days it started to rain, windy and water became murky. Still not too bad to swim a bit. Food generally oversalted, beverage too sweet but it is common thing on the resorts here so it is too bad either. To get a reservation to a restaurant you need to get to the lobby @8am or you miss it. You get there a better steak but generally buffet is almost the same without all the hassle. Personnel is generally friendly but many of them look like they have personal life crisis. If it is so hard for them while resort is hlaf empty how they will survive really busy time during the holidays?
There is a free wi-fi in the lobby if you have your own laptop, Internet cafe is $9 for 30 min.
Now on the topic of local vendors. You can't stay there and not be constantly bugged by boat owners, braid makers, "sigurette" sellers, etc. If you do get a ride once(which is a great thing to do, me and my wide rode jet ski for a "special" price $50 for 30 min) you are not bugged that much after that.
You have to be mentally ready to go to a flea market, especially if you are a part of a big crowd. I've done my shopping at Times square, normal stores owned by guys from India and then was left, with my family, on a flea market. I felt like I'm in a war zone under enemy attack. They cross your path, shout at you, any possible way to drug you in their shacks with exactly the same goods in any of them. Some would some give you junk "presents" and then ask for a present back. And it's not just a dollar. Luckily when I offered a buck back guy got offended and left me alone with his strings he was tying around my wrist.
If you buy a tour from resort try to avoid multiple stop shopping tour which invloves flea market for the reasons I've described above unless you really want it. You might want arrange your own ride if you have few people with you or you will pay $25 per person to do that. Watching sunset at Rick's cafe is a nice thing, mayfield waterfalls trip involves 2-3 hrs roundtrip, 1.5 hrs in the water with a guide and photographer following you, attempts to sell you souveniers once again. It's nice time in the river going up through water streams, you get personal driver, guide and photographer (watch what they try to charge you after). Disk with recordings was offered for $40, when I got it in the hotel it had $65 tag on it (2 disks - dvd with movie and CD with pictures). Still paid $40 at the front desk. It suppose to have jpeg pictures and mpeg movies on it but there were no mpeg files, just one folder with VIDEO_TS (some video software) files that you can't play everywhere. Make sure you check them before you buy. Usually they add nature shots but it wasn't there this time.
To round it up I just want to mention absense of Apple rep at the airport on our way back,
Bobsled restaraunt where we were charged $3 for a cap of tea although it was $2 on their menu. Lady who sold it to us explained that it is like a coffee that was listed above tea, with one price, $2, for a small cup and $3 for large, and then brough us a receipt where it was listed as 2 large coffee. I wrote email to the address on the receipt and already got response from foodtravelexperts.com Executive Administrative Assistant so hopefully they can clean this place up.
Bottom line - nice place to stay, not even close to 5 star resort service. If you get a good deal to go there, go! Just bring your own shampoo, etc.
