“Come back to Jamaica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

This was our second trip to The Caves and it was wonderful. The laid back, casual vibe is what we love... and the food! The food is amazing here because they stick to what they do best, real Jamaican fare, no fancy fusions attempts or ridiculous concoctions. Curry goat, jerk chicken, roast lamb, incredible snapper! The breakfast is fantastic, made to order, whatever you want. This is not a resort. The pool is tiny, the rooms are funky, but very comfortable with good linens and pillows and comfy beds. Romantic, with candles, a fridge stocked with goodies... no TVs... that's a good thing! It's about the views, the sounds of the waves crashing, the free-flowing Blackwells Rum, the food, the spa, the privacy and the cool caves. The staff is very friendly and will always make you smile. My favorite thing about this place is you are never, ever asked to sign a bill or presented with anything that even reminds you that it costs a thing, its relaxing not to have dollar signs ticking before your eyes while trying to relax on an indulgent vacation! You can help yourself at the bar if nobody is there, you can raid the minibar every single day. There are freshly baked brownies and cakes set out in the afternoons. It is like going to visit your eccentric uncle who retired to Jamaica and told his staff to indulge you. The only thing you will see on your bill at the end is for the fabulous time you spent in the tiny spa listening to the waves crashing against the cliffs as you are pampered. Yeah, we love this place!!

My husband and I decided we needed a short break -- escaping February weather, work and kids for a long weekend of simple relaxation. The Caves looked like just the place and was a non-stop flight away. Turned out to perfectly fit the bill.

We tend to stay at small hotels with local character and neither of us had ever done an all-inclusive. Well, the Caves oozes charm and has plenty of character. Those little cliffside bungalows are just as wonderful in person and, when you venture out of your cottage, you'll find a dozen different little nooks and crannies in which you can curl up on a sun lounger, sip your drink and forget all cares. Moreover, going all-inclusive meant we had nothing to plan or worry about while there. Staying on-site for all meals also allowed the guests to get to know the staff. Generally I would feel pretty indifferent about that, however the staff at the Caves are truly exceptional in their seemingly genuine friendliness.

I was seeking structure-less days to laze around, but thought my husband might get a bit stir crazy. Turns out we both did just fine. During our stay we did snorkeling with Paul, which was fun but there's definitely more to see in waters elsewhere in the Caribbean. My husband also enjoyed doing an extended kayaking trip with Paul. And we both took advantage of the on-site spa to get excellent massages.

Below are few things I was concerned might be issues before the trip. I tend to over-think things just a bit.....:

Bugs: I am a mosquito magnet and thought I might get mobbed by them while there. Wasn't an issue at all during our late February stay.

Food: I'm pretty picky about restaurants and the food here ranged from good to very good. Soups and daily banana pancakes were the highlight, desserts were consistently disappointing. Overall, though food was just fine.

No A/C: We stayed in a room with no A/C and never missed it. Of course, might be more of an issue during warmer months.

Charter flight from Montego Bay: Since we were only staying 3 nights, I booked the short charter flight to Negril to get us to the resort ASAP. Wasn't worth it. We ended up sitting around Montego Bay airport for over an hour before taking off. And the little plane was ancient. Next time I'd just have the Caves arrange a car/driver both ways.

One suggestion for the hotel: Get better mattresses and pillows! Both were rock hard and took their toll after 3 nights.

Hope that info helps. Truly, the place is just amazing. We plan to return soon!

Room Tip: We stayed in Moon Shadow -- a whole house for the price of an upstairs room. Just know that it is a...

Dear Ash5704,

Thank you for your wonderful review and great feedback. We truly appreciate it as we are always trying to improve our offerings and it is through these invaluable comments from our guests that we are able to do so. We are pleased that the "charm and character" of The Caves was exactly what you were looking for and that we exceeded your expectation.

To note since you were here last February, AC units have been installed in our three remaining cottages that did not have so the summer months will be more comfortable for all guests. We have also added WIFI to the rooms as well. Our desserts have been revamped and we are stilling working to expand our repertoire. We have included desserts such as oatmeal fried bananas, apple-cranberry crumble and spicy chocolate molten cake to name a few. These are all mouth-watering and definitely worth a try on your next visit. Thanks for the tip regarding the mattress in your room; we are looking into that currently.

Our aim is for all guests to feel at home and like they are staying with friends as oppose to being at a resort and that you left feeling this way means that we have truly done our jobs. We look forward to welcoming you home again.

The Caves Team.

We just returned from our second visit to The Caves. We loved it so much last year that we chose to take our sons and their girlfriends with us this year for a well deserved family holiday. We live in different cities and don't get to spend enough time together and The Caves was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy each others company. We were greeted at the gates like old friends and our family quickly understood what it was that drew us back.

Thank you to everyone, staff and guests alike who helped make this a vacation we will remember always.

See you next year!

We stayed at The Caves for one night. It was a great experience. You choose your sun beds on quiet cliff points and listen to the waves. The scenery was amazing. My best experience was the spa. Olive, the lady in charge of the Spa was excellent. I had the yummy Aveda lavender scrub and facial. The spa is a room with a balcony overlooking the ocean so you hear the ocean whilst getting your massage/facial. It was soooo relaxing. After the Spa we had the cave dinner for valentines day. It was very romantic with rose petals and candles everywhere and the food was very good. So if you want to have a romantic dinner this is definitely a lovely experience.

HOWEVER, DO NOT RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY BY FLYING VIRGIN ATLANTIC. We checked-in online and printed our boarding passes for the flight. At the airport, we proceeded directly to departures, arriving at the gate more than an hour before the delayed departure, but within an hour of the scheduled departure. Arriving at the gate before boarding had commenced, we were told we had been bumped off the flight; lost our seats. At this point we were reminded of the text on the printed boarding pass informing passengers that they should report to the gate 45 minutes before scheduled departure. Interestingly, this sentence is not in bold, whereas 3 other paragraphs are, including one promoting Virgin currency services. However, when I checked-in online a mere 24 hours beforehand, I was informed via confirmation email: If you don't have any luggage to check in you can head straight to departures. Please make sure you check your flight details below, and bring your passport, e-ticket receipt or paper ticket and other travel documents to the airport with you.

We had done this before, no problem. We had paid for our tickest. Check-in is only allowed 24 hours beforehand, so it’s not as though we would forget our international flight! No mention of arriving at gate before scheduled departure.

On the day the flight was delayed and the gate was clearly busy, so we stayed in the Club Mobay lounge a little longer. Eventually we arrive at the gate ‘late’, but over an hour before notified delayed departure and before any boarding had commenced.
We lost our Premium Economy seats for the long overnight flight, and eventually flew economy. WE WERE TOLD FLIGHT WAS OVERSOLD, but IT SEEMED TO US THAT THE AIRPORT GATE HAD BASICALLY RESOLD OUT TICKETS. DO NOT RUIN YOUR HOLS FLY SOME OTHER AIRLINE.

Room Tip: We stayed at the One Drop which was pretty basic with the shower outside and the rates for that room...

This place is amazing. If I were going to Jamaica only once, I would not pass up a chance to stay at this place. The service is amazing without being onerous. Everyone is very friendly. The food is very good. They offer a wide array at breakfast and they varied the choices for lunch and dinner each day.

If you're not familiar with the place, it has a small number of cabins and rooms along the cliffs and caves of Negril. Each cabin or room is named (we stayed in the "Butterfly" room) and you have your own private entrance. The room was spacious with a nice dining area and sitting area. It overlooked the length of the property, the lighthouse and the sea. The rooms are funky -- brightly painted and kind of shabby chic. We had coffee service and a refrig that was stocked with water, wine, soft drinks, Red Stripe and snacks. Most rooms have their own wifi, but there is also wifi for the common areas. There are a number of spots where you can dive from the cliffs into the sea. Some are full height, and one is through a hole into a cave in the cliffside. They have bikes, kayaks, and snorkel equipment available for use. There are nice trails throughout the property and they are lit at night for evening strolls. There are a number of pergolas and porches and a wide variety of sitting and sunning areas at all levels of the cliffs. There's a spa onsite, a couple of hot tubs and saunas and a pool. You can easily find privacy if you want it, especially since there are not more than 20-30 guests at any one point. You should not have trouble relaxing.

Be prepared for a quiet stay. The Caves is at the west/north end of Jamaica, about 1.5 hours from MBJ airport. While you can walk down the road to some bars and restaurants, walking into Negril town center is about 4 miles, and the beach is further beyond that. You should stay there only if you welcome getting away from things, or if you are prepared to invest in transportation. If you want activities off the property you will want to rent a car or take cabs (the latter is not cheap, e.g. $90 each way to the airport and $20 each way to a local golf course). Some places will come pick you up (like the dive shop), but I don't know about other local attractions.

Room Tip: The "Butterfly" room is magnificent. It's right over the "Sea Turtle" which...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Caves sits along the limestone cliffs of the West End of Negril, right next to the famous Negril Lighthouse in Jamaica. Although situated only a few miles away from the bustling town center, this private enclave is a world apart. Eleven handcrafted wood and stone thatched-roof cottages, plus a 4-bedroom fully self-contained luxury villa, are interwoven between ten acres of lush vegetation and naturally formed volcanic caves. Quaint stone pathways wind through the limestone cliffs dotted with palm, sea grape and dogwood trees overlooking the Caribbean Sea. An arrangement of coral stairs and walkways lead to sundecks with uninterrupted views of the sea and sky, and grottos with turquoise water pools and fossilized marine life. A tropical reef system comes right up to the edge of the cliff, perfect for snorkeling. Guests can climb down ladders into the sea or take a leap from several “jump points,” the highest of which is 30 feet! An intimate, private and unique resort, The Caves is perfect for romance and relaxation. The Caves generally does not accept children under 16 years old.
