Be careful what you look for, you may not get it. FIREFLY on Negril Beach sounded delightful, looked delightful from it's website...we like clothing optional, but didn't want Hedonism or any of the other packaged, processed resorts. We like to make our own way, like we do in the Greek Islands, coast of Turkey, Hawaii. I mention these to not so subtley indicate we ARE experienced travellers. But carefree, independent travel is NOT a good idea in Negril, as Firefly is a good example. Hottub hardly working, clothing optional beach means NO PRIVACY as ill mannered people walk by and stare down at you...and security at Firefly is a farce...we were attacked one evening out of the shadows from the derelict place next door to FIREFLY. We were saved by our own resistence and the timidity of the attackers. When told of this the management responded "Did our securiity guard help you?" The only time we had seen the fellow that turned out to be the security guard was when he was going into and out of one of the female manager's residence on the grounds...late night and early morning. In between, no appearance on the beach, that's for sure.
Prices were also high for what we got: a "chalet" type cabin behind the bar. $95.00 a night in August. AND we were charged twice for it, processed in the UK on our credit card. Took expensive phone calls on our part just to straighten it out.
Also be very careful of going round on your own. There's a great deal of animosity toward Americans due to our trade policies.
All in all, the word is be very careful, stay inside Beaches or Couples or whatever guarded enclave you choose. Negril's FIREFLY type of places can sting.

I would like to reply to the review dated August 3rd 2005.
While each is entitled to state his opinion, reviews should not be deliberately misleading. I was away from Jamaica in August 2005 and when I saw the review last week, it just did not sound like Firefly.
After quite a bit of searching it has become clear that the guests were at Firefly in 2003. It seems odd that they waited 2 years before writing.
Our beach is clothing optional and many naturist guests visit us year after year without any problems. However, for one weekend each August there are large numbers of visitors from other parts of Jamaica who may not be used to seeing naked persons on the beach.
The complaint about security seems unreal - there has never been a derelict place next door to Firefly in the 25 years we have been in business and it is the police who provide security on the beach. Our staff could hardly have asked our guests if our security guard helped them, as he would never be next door.
The security guard does, of course, report to the live-in supervisor, but the insinuation in the review is totally unfair. Further, it is not his duty to be highly visible, but to be as insconpicuous as possible while doing his job.
It is untrue that the reviewer was overcharged, as is implied. We charged 50% deposit plus 50% balance, hence two charges.
$95 a night for two persons with accommodation right on the beach, including a small kitchen, nice veranda &c. - you don't get that at Beaches or Couples, even if you pay $100's more.
I believe that most people love Negril because it is good to move around, walking miles on the beach where they can meet people from almost everywhere, can buy almost anything small and be glad that they are not locked in a 'guarded enclave.'
I can assure everyone that there is no animosity whatever towards American individuals in Negril.
At Firefly we always try to provide our guests with a high standard of care, excellent cleanliness and a unique experience shown fairly on our website.
