Just returned from a 6 night stay at Coco La Palm. This was my 4th trip to Negril, I have stayed at Rondell Village and Sunset at the Palms previously. Overall we had a good time. We arrived around 4 pm to check in and our room was ready. We were told when we booked since there were two of us traveling as friends, we would have a room with 2 beds. Upon check-in, however, we were given a room with only 1 king bed. They said there were no rooms available with 2 beds, which I found strange since we were told later by numerous staff that the resort was only at 1/3 capacity. Maybe more were coming later in the week? I asked if we could have a rollaway, and they said yes but for a fee of $20 a night! Come on, the least they could do was give us the rollaway since we were promised two beds when we booked. Anyways, they gave us a "beachfront" room, and while it was close to the beach, the front of the room actually had a view of the coco inn next door, not the beach.
The room itself was adequate, however it did have some quirks.
The air conditioner started making a horrible noise 10 minutes after the bellhop turned it on for us. A maintenance guy was there immediately (he heard the noise outside while walking by) and said he would change the air conditioner right away but due to hotel policy we had to stay in the room while he did it. They worked really hard, they had to hammer the whole thing out to remove it, but it took 2 HOURS. Just what we wanted to do after we arrived was sit there for 2 hours in the hot room. It was nice talking to the guys though, about their families and other stuff. And the new air conditioner was great, and I was glad we had it. The bathroom light was difficult to turn on--I had to hold the light switch 3/4 of the way up for 5-10 seconds for the fluorescence to turn on, you couldn’t just flip the switch. It was a pain, we ended up just leaving it on all night once we got it to turn on with the door closed. Neither of the reading lights on the headboard worked, nor did the light on the wall, the only light we had was from the overhead fan. Also, the TV was completely broken. I didn’t go there to watch TV, so wasn’t a big deal, but would have been nice to listen to music or watch the news at night while getting ready for bed. Lastly, they were fixing a pipe in the room above us, so from about 10am-3pm during the day we heard very loud drilling and hammering. We are not late sleepers, but I was a little annoyed when I wanted to take a nap one afternoon. I mentioned all these things to the front desk and they basically just shrugged.
On the plus side, the room was extremely clean and our housekeeper Marie was so nice and friendly and did an absolutely wonderful job.
The food at the restaurant was pretty good, we had breakfast there 3 times with our coupons, they do tend to use a lot of oil when they cook eggs or anything else for that matter, but it was tasty. The coupons are for continental breakfast but you can apply them to anything on the menu, so our breakfasts only cost a couple of dollars every day. Lunches at the beach bar were good, the turkey reuben was awesome, good jerk chicken (although not as good as Best in the West across the street) and good fries. However they were out of a lot of items on the lunch menu on a couple different days which was disappointing. We had dinner there once, which was just ok and kind of pricey.
The beach was awesome and I think is Coco’s best feature. They definitely have one of the nicest, widest places on the strip, with lots of trees for shade. Since the resort wasn’t full, it was easy to get a shady spot during the day, but I’d imagine during high season you’d have to get up early to claim a spot. Water is gorgeous and the security people do a good job supervising the people coming by to sell stuff. A couple of mornings, they were out of clean beach towels, and many of the beach chairs are stretched out and very uncomfortable with a plastic bar sticking right into your tail bone—they definitely could use some cushions. I sat on an inflatable raft on the chair and that was much better. We had pretty good weather for this time of year—every morning it was beautiful, and then sometime in the afternoon it would cloud up and then downpour for 15 minutes to an hour, then clear up and be beautiful again.
The pools and hot tubs were clean and nice and never had anyone in them. The grounds are very pretty and the staff (minus a couple of the front desk people) are all very nice and genuinely friendly. Ricky was nice enough to fill up the rafts we brought and Conroy the bartender is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and good at what he does.
We ate pizza at Chances down the beach (with the Jamaican bobsled in front) and it was wonderful and very reasonable. We also went to Seastar Inn on the cliffs end on Saturday night—they have a live band and an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet for $12. What a bargain. The food was awesome AND they have a free shuttle that will pick you up and bring you back. I would highly recommend checking this place out if you are there on a Saturday. Fun Holiday had good 2 for 1 lobster specials every day, and For real bar next to Coco has the cheapest drinks.
Overall we had a good time. We wanted relaxation and to hang out on the beach and that’s exactly what we got. The stuff with the room was annoying but I don’t sweat the small things. I just wanted to write an honest review. I love Negril and will return again. It’s the people of the island that make this such a wonderful place to visit. I would consider staying at Coco again but only for a low price. For the price we paid it was close to what I was expecting. However, in the high season, I know the room we stayed in goes for close to triple what we paid and if I had paid that much I would have felt slightly ripped off.
