We spent a week at Couples Negril from Dec 4th through Dec 11th. We really enjoyed the resort and had a great time. We booked through Dream Makers Vacation Services and all went well. This was our 6th trip to Jamaica. We’ve previously stayed at Sandals Royal Caribbean (twice), Couples Swept Away, RIU Tropical Bay, and Sandals Whitehouse. Overall we’d put CN at or near the top of the list.

The bus ride from the airport was more grueling than usual due to road construction and traffic. About 2 hours total without a stop. It made us very happy we booked a TimAir flight for the return. More on that later.

The warm greeting we received on arrival set the stage for a wonderful week. Herbert greeted us, brought cold towels and champagne and got us and our luggage quickly to our room. He smiled and waved all week wherever we saw him. What a great ambassador for Couples.

Herbert was just the beginning. The service and attitude of all the staff was CN’s best attribute. Everyone was friendly, eager to please, and we were repeatedly asked how we were enjoying our stay. The few minor issues we had were addressed quickly. We had no liquor in our minibar on arrival. One phone call and it was delivered within the hour. Housekeeping didn’t service our room until 6pm on our first day. We mentioned our preference to the housekeeper when she arrived and our room was cleaned before noon the rest of the week. We did not receive our spa and gift shop vouchers at checkin, so I went to the customer relations desk to inquire. He printed them for me immediately and greeted me by name for the rest of the week.

I wasn’t sure we’d like the smaller layout of CN compared to CSA, but as it turned out we loved the small and intimate feel of the property. Everything was just a short walk from our room in bldg 7. The resort was full for several of the days we were there, yet it never felt too crowded. We never had any trouble finding chairs, floaties or shade on the beach. The high occupancy in this economy was a surprise. Couples must be doing things right. The neighboring properties were not nearly as full.

We were very happy with room 7208, on the 2nd floor in bldg 7. Yes the rooms are a bit dated but we found ours clean and charming. We had a surprisingly good view of the pond, wedding gazebo, beach and sea. Much better than we were led to believe from previous reviews. In fact this was probably our favorite balcony among all our stays in Jamaica. We had no issues with hot water or road noise.

We tried all the restaurants and found the food uniformly good though, honestly, there were only a few “wows” among our meals. The lobster at Cassava Terrace was fantastic. Giant lobster tail, perfectly cooked. The appetizer and sushi platters at Lychee, and the fish entrée’s at Heliconia were also highlights. Despite the hype, we found nothing special about Otaheite. For lunches, we really enjoyed the patties, jerk chicken and snapper sandwiches at the beach grill. Plenty of lunch options at Cassava Terrace too, and the breakfast buffet had plenty of variety.

The Repeaters Dinner on Monday was held out on the pool deck due to the large number of repeat guests. There were 80 returning couples in a resort with roughly 240 rooms. What amazing loyalty. The beef tenderloin and salmon combination was delicious.

We didn’t do too many activities but we liked the cat cruise and the opportunity to slide off into the water and swim through the caves. It’s always fun to see all the other resorts along long bay and the cliffs. We also really enjoyed the kitchen tour. We were able to meet Chef Misja and learn about his background before the guided tour of the kitchen facilities. One can only imagine what it must be like during dinner service. We also took advantage of the spa and gift shop credits included in our booking. Our first-ever massages were wonderful and won’t be our last.

I must say we were surprised at the number of groups present. The property had a much less romantic feel than anticipated. Wherever we went there were groups of guests having fun, but rarely did we see couples walking hand in hand, sharing a floatie, or sitting alone in a private spot. We did, however, encounter a group of guys throwing a football on the beach and “rating” the women walking by and a raucous hot tub group serenading us during dinner at Heliconia. I looked around one night at Cassava Terrace and there were far more tables of 4, 6 or 8 than tables of two. Oh well, to each his own. Clearly everyone was having a great time at CN, as did we. But we found CSA, Whitehouse and Sandals Royal to have a more romantic feel.

For the first time in 6 trips we chose to book a Timair flight for the return to MoBay. What a fabulous experience! We left CN at 11:30, took off from the Negril airstrip at 11:45, and were checking in at MBJ at 12:15. It was a gorgeous 15 minute flight along the coast. The alternative would have been a 9:15 departure from CN on the bus! It was a great way to end the trip versus another grueling 2 hour bus ride.

Finally, our thanks to a few extra-special staff members: Herbert (mentioned above); Tennyson and Ivylin, who took good care of us at the swim-up bar; Courtney, the Asst Maintenance Manager who sat with us at the Repeaters dinner and had a small maintenance issue fixed for us the next morning; and Ayana, a trainee who brightened our days at the Cassava Terrace salad station with her smile and friendliness.

Overall, we had a great time at CN and would recommend it to others. We are likely to return.

My wife and I went to celebrate our 30th anniversary on Nov.16 - 23. Nice enough rooms. Appreciated all the included activities. Had a great time on a fantastic beach with warm calm waters and great floaties. Chairs were always available which was real nice. Pool is nice but spent most of our time on the beach. Have been to the Bahamas and Mexico and this was by far the best place we've been too. Enjoyed the friendly people and awesome staff on the catamaran the snorkel trips and the waitstaff in the restaurants, grounds, beach and bars. Food,Drink and atmosphere at Cavasava Terrace, Helliconia Grill and Lychee (Hey Jason!) was all very good. Didn't care as much for Otahitie, a bit overblown, (just personal preference). The live music at Cavasava Terrace everyday and at night was awesome. The piano bar with Paul was a lot of fun. P.S. get him a couple of cordless mics instead of trying to stretch the cord around. Charlie & boys on the catamaran cruise were a lot of fun. Went to Ricks Cafe, (not bad), Margaritiville, (once is enough), and the craft shops across the street for souvenirs. Also checked out Swept away one day. Liked Couples Negril better. Grounds are well taken care of and security is good. Entertainment staff Travis, Lascyleles, Shanique were great and did a good job of making everybody feel welcome. Great atmosphere. Met some great couples of all ages from England, Chicago, Maryland, Colorado. Enjoyed the guys on the beach coming by and playing Reggae music. Hated to leave even if the guy loading the bags in the shuttle to leave was a little grumpy. Definitely want to come back and do the golf next time.

Last year we went to Couples San Souci and loved it. Returning to Couples this year we decided to try Negril after reading all the reviews on Trip Advisor and the Message Board posted on the Couples website. The reviews were exact, you couldn't have asked for a more beautiful beach location with crystal clear water for swimming, diving and snorkeling on famous Bloody Bay off 7 mile beach.

Negril won us over! While my husband spent time with Craig at the Dive Shop getting certified in Advanced Diving and racking up 12 dives in one week, I was being pampered with all the free credits at the spa. We did the night snorkeling and had a really exciting time. The Inclusive Catamaran ride was so much fun swimming in the caves, going down the sliding board off the back of the boat what a blast !!. The grounds, service, beach and attention paid to every person was top notch. Please don't believe any bad reviews as some people will never be happy. If you enjoy a beatiful beach, swimming, snorkeling, diving in paradise go to Couples Negril. We were in a garden suite in building 8 that had a beautiful room, large balcony with a hammock and the largest bathroom I've ever seen at a hotel. The rooms are not luxury, they are comfortable with topical decor. If you look at the pictures before you book you will see exactly what you are getting.

We had one issue on service at a restaurant and before the night was over a chilled bottle of champagne and chocolates were sent to our room with a card from management apologizing for less than perfect service. We really didn't think it was that big of a deal but man did management take care of us. Karen , the Manager left a message on our phone and came up to us at breakfast to ensure everything was all right. I've never had such customer service thank you very much Karen you are doing a fantastic job. We've already booked for next Thanksgiving and can't wait to return. We met some really nice people mostly from my husbands dive boat. We had dinner with a couple from South Carolina and spend alot of time talking to a couple from Emerald Island NC. Hope to see you guys next year enjoyed your company.

We just returned home from a week trip to CN. I will try to detail both the good and the bad from our point of view as well as my comparison to CTI.

Diving - We were married at CTI three years ago and decided to try CN simply because of the raves about the diving and the watersports employees. When we get to go on vacation, which with 4 children isn’t all that often, our number one thing we are looking for other than time with each other is to be able to scuba dive. This ended up being one of the biggest downfalls of our trip to CN. When we arrived, we went straight to the watersports huts. We were told that the dives for the following day were all booked but since we had our own equipment, we could show up and see if there was room for us the next morning. We did just that and were able to get on the boat. From here things went downhill. My husband had some problems equalizing on our first dive and I am not sure if it was because there were so many people on the dive or the dive master simply wasn’t paying attention but for about 20 minutes into the dive, he had no idea where my husband was or that he was having troubles descending. We are both advanced open water and rescue diver certified and I could not believe that the dive master simply did not pay attention to the fact that he had a diver who was having problems. I finally descended without him to get the dive master and let him know what was going on. We had both resurfaced before this to try to get his ears cleared out and the boat had left so there was no just getting back on the boat. After this event and the fact that there was a large group of people who were diving together who were simply not friendly to us, I was a little concerned about continuing to dive with the group. If you want to dive at CN, you better plan to be up early and get to the watersports hut by 730 or 745 or you might as well forget about getting on the list also. This bothered me all week as the first day one lady told me she was the designated stenographer and she would sign her whole group up bright and early as to get everyone on the boat together. This was a very frustrating experience and there were a couple of other couples who also voiced their concern with the fact that one person was signing a whole bunch of people up. We’d get there at 745 in the morning with 2 people in front of us and by the time the list got to us to sign up there would be 10 or 12 people on it. Bryan, the dive manager did arrange for a couple of us who were very upset with the issue to go out on other dives that he created which was great. On Saturday, we went over to sign up and were told it was full for Sunday, which was our last chance to dive. I again raised concerns with Robert about one person signing a whole group up because they had said it was not going to be allowed and he argued with me about whether or not it was still happening. It was plain to see the handwriting was the same for a majority of the list of people. Needless to say, after spending a large amount of money to bring 2 extra suitcases with our dive equipment on the plane, I was very frustrated that we only got to dive 4 times the entire time we were there. When we were at CTI, we dove twice a day every day with no problems. Hands down I would take CTI’s dive team over CN’s any day for friendliness, environment, and making sure everyone was getting to dive as often as they wanted.
Beach & Red Flag Service - Due to the diving issue, we spent quite a lot of time just hanging out on the beach and enjoying the beach and ocean. CN definitely has the advantage over CTI as far as the beach goes. It is beautiful and a lovely place to just kick back and relax. The red flag service on the beach was extremely slow almost every day unless you were on the Au Natural side of the beach where you were quickly taken care of.
Au Natural beach – Bar service was wonderful but I definitely missed TI! The environment while we were there was much more quiet and secluded without much interaction between couples. I really like the interaction and find the pool and TI to be much more suited to this.
Rooms – We had a deluxe beachfront room, 1102. I had considered upgrading to a suite and after viewing the suite next door was glad I didn’t. The room we were in was located in a good spot, close to everything and the room was well taken care of by housekeeping for us. The only thing I would have liked better about the room was to have a direct ocean view. Unless you are out on the patio, you could not see the ocean. I liked the fact that you didn’t have a hallway in between rooms and the hotel feel you get at CTI, but the view from the rooms at CTI is much better. We also had quite a bit of noise outside the room after 10 p.m. because we were so close to the bar but I would simply turn the tv up and no problems then.
Dining – We tried every restraunt while we were there. Otaheite is definitely not my cup of tea. Neither one of us liked the meal there. Lychee is fine and some of the food was really good. The beach grill and jerk chicken are to die for! Heliciona is very nice in the evening and our meal was also fine there. My favorite was Friday night at the Cassava Terrace. This was the best shrimp cocktail and lobster. All servers were very friendly and willing to bring whatever you wanted.
Beach Dinner – This was another disappointment for me and I would definitely not do it again. It was very nice sitting on the beach with my hubby and having dinner on our anniversary but we could have grabbed something from one of the other resteraunts and brought it down and been happy. I had set this up as a surprise for my husband before we went. The menu that was sent to me as well as the menu displayed at guest services is not what we were served. I tried to explain to our waitress that we were supposed to be having lobster and chicken but she didn’t understand so we just went with the salmon they brought us. I felt like after spending that much money on the dinner and having planned it way in advanced, it should have been what we had ordered.
Spa – We chose to upgrade our couple’s repeaters massage to an hour massage in the treehouse. We got there and were taken to the treehouse where our massage therapists began their magic. After 20 minutes they quit, told us to get dressed and they would meet us downstairs. We went back to the spa desk and asked if there was a misunderstanding when I told them we wanted to upgrade and they said no, they just hadn’t communicated it to the two girls doing the massage. We were taken back upstairs, told to disrobe again and then they spent another 20 minutes completing the massage. Because of the confusion, we ended up paying for an hour massage and only got about 40 minutes. I also had a facial done at the spa which was wonderful.
All in all, it is probably a good thing that I was there to relax and spend time with my hubby. It seemed there were many mix-ups and confusions as compared to our visit to CTI. We really did enjoy lying on the beach and playing in the ocean but honestly, I could do that at almost any resort in the Caribbean. What had stood out to me in the past at couples was just not there this time. Many of the employees are wonderful including the young man who was taking care of the grounds outside of our room everyday ( I can’t remember his name ), Darin (Otaheite wait staff), and Bryan (the manager at watersports) while others went as far as arguing with me. I am not sure that we will try CN again although I loved the beach. We may start checking into other places/resorts or go back to CTI and see how the changes are.

We were married on October 24th and left for Couples Negril - October 26th. We arrived around noon and were immediately greeted with such wonderful hospitality. A cleansing towel and a champagne glass were presented as we awaited the introduction tour. There were about 6 other couples there and our Activity Director made great conversation as he showed us the property.

The rooms are nice, clean, and cool! They are not fancy rooms, rather, quaint rooms. However, everything else about Couples Negril made this a five star stay. We spent most of our time on the beach or restaurant. The food was amazing! We dined at almost all the restaurants, had the lychee martini, and had amazing service. We were greeted and escorted to our tables, had water poured, and asked what else we would like to drink. Our glasses or cups were never empty! We love food and their food was really good! Their coffee was very delicious! We loved the breakfasts because it was always so different every morning, but there were always eggs, which I love. The lobster tail from the Lychee Restaurant (?) was so big & delicious!

The time of year we went is considered the rainy season. To us, the weather was perfect and could not have had a better time. The beach, the water, and activities kept us busy. It did rain, everyday around 1pm or 2 pm. It only last for an hour or so, but it was the perfect time to go grab lunch. When we finished eating, the weather was perfect again for more sun, swimming, & volleyball. The water was warm and so beautiful.

We did not leave the resort, but when we return we will. There were a lot of fun activities at the resort that we were kept busy. There was volleyball, snorkeling (day & night - the latter was the best), catamaran rides, dance classes, couples massage, and so much more!

The best part about our trip was that we were able to have a very romantic time together while being taken care of by the great staff at Couples Negril. When we wanted to have company, there were plenty of other couples to talk or dine with. Many mornings we just laid out on the chairs or floating mats in the water, talking & laughing. Overall, if you are looking for a great getaway with someone special - Couples Negril is the best.

We are very grateful to our travel agent (Mark Hennigan/Dream Travel Inc) that suggested Couples Negril, we never thought of it as an option. He had to share his experience with us and told us to read TripAdvisor.com. I am very glad that we listened because we can't wait to go back.

We have not visited the other Couples locations but we are very satisfied with our Couples Negril vacation
.
