Ok, this may be long, but hopefully thorough! We spent our 15th anniversary here from July 11th through the 18th. The 7 days flew by! We read a lot of reviews before deciding to spend our hard earned money at Couples. It exceeded our expectations!
After arriving at the airport and going through customs, we went to the Couples desk and they had us sit down while they got our names and gave us our first Red Stripes! Be prepared to tip the baggage handlers a few bucks. We chose the bus ride to the resort and it provided a great view of the countryside and the ocean. For such a laid back country, they sure drive like maniacs! After an hour and 15 minutes we arrived and were greeted with very cool towels and Champagne. We arrived at 11:30, and check in is 4:00. No problem, we left our carry on at the desk, changed into swim wear, had lunch and went swimming.
The room was great. We had a ground floor garden view room in building 7. The wedding gazebo was out our patio, and we had a great view of the ocean! Bring CD's to enjoy while your in the room getting ready or enjoying the morning room service. We ordered coffee, juice and fruit most mornings as a wake up call, then had a real breakfast at the Cassava restaurant. the Omelettes are delicious! Try the Crab meat in them if you like that! The fruit is so good too!
Every day was beautiful from sunrise to around 2:00 then it would either rain an hour or two, or just get cloudy. No problem, Mon! The ocean and swim up bar water feels warmer than the rain! One day we spent hours in the hot tub with 3 other couples taking turns swimming over to the pool bar to get drinks! (yes! you can literally jump out of the hot tub into the main pool, swim to the small spillway that slides you to the pool bar!)
Monday night was the beach party. There was a cocktail party then food was served outdoors followed by entertainment on the beach. We went sailing daily on the fleet of Hobie cats they have. I went Wakeboarding and waterskiing a few days. Learned to scuba dive in the dive pool, (Sugar is a great instructor!) then did a 30 foot dive at a reef in the ocean. We took the sunset/ booze cruise/ pirates cave tour by boat twice. That gives you a nice view of the shoreline as you travel 45 minutes to the caves. for $2 you can jump off the 35 foot cliff, or just stay on the boat or swim in the crystal clear water, and watch everyone else! We took the snorkel trip and saw some very colorful fish and reefs! All of that is included in your trip, plus a glass bottom boat!
There was always plenty of beach chairs and floats at the pool, or beach. The red flag service is nice. just plant your flag in the sand, and the staff will take your drink order! The service there was slow at times, but if you were really thirsty, just walk to the pool/beach bar. Omar, Knollis, and Ian will make you any drink you want! Beware too many Omar speacials though! The Dirty Banana's were great, and for the truly daring, have a Flaming Bob Marley! I'm not sure what was in that, but it was 3 layers, red, yellow and green. They light it on fire, and you suck it down through a straw!
We used the free internet access to keep in touch with the kids at home, but found out that a call home was only around $1.20 a minute. Much easier than locating or using a calling card, because they cost a little to use too. They have wireless internet access if you bring a laptop.
The food was always great and what a variety! The Jerk chicken at the beach grill was one of my favorites. Friday was Lobster tail night! We never made it to the fancy restaurant, but heard great things about it. Sign up early for reservations, and guys, bring pants and closed toe shoes. Insulated cups are good for drinks, but we didn't mind the small ones they give you. You need to move around a little if your drinking lots!
They brought people in to sell there crafts one day, but you can walk to a market (about a quarter mile) and they will charge you much less, they expect you to barter with them.
Things to bring:
An extension cord for the ladies if they bring curling irons. There is no plug in the bathroom.
A hair dryer. The one in the bathroom is small.
A candle or a glade plug-in or both!
A few swim suits (nothing dries fast!)
A beach bag
Beach towels (easier than babysitting the ones provided, and easier to find your chair!)
Bring an open mind! Relax! No need to hurry! The staff is great and will always remember you. The bartenders get busy, but wait patiently, and they will get to you in a friendly manner. Everyone is treated the same, must be due to the fact that there is no tipping allowed!
This was our first trip to Jamaica, but we had the best time ever! We plan to return to Couples as soon as we can afford it, and our kids allow us to be alone again! Please email if you have any question!
