“Rockhouse”

Rockhouse Hotel

May 5, 2008

Recently spent a few days at the Rockhouse with a couple of girlfriends for some R&R, and a little partying (just a little). This was my third stay at the Rockhouse and I enjoyed my time just as much this time as each of the others. The staff are courteous and attentive to all the details. We particularly enjoyed spending our time at the pool; we made use of the bar & grill each day. special thanks to Richie, Randy, & Shane for their wonderful bar talents and for Tony and his expertise with the snapper sandwich. The staff at the pool bar and grill made our brief time there very enjoyable.

Our last night at the Rockhouse, we decided to eat in the main restaurant; the atmosphere and food were both enjoyable and the staff were pleasant, professional, and attentive as usual.

We are already starting to wonder how soon we can return.

Hats off to all the staff at the Rockhouse who show their excellent customer service skills on a consistent basis.

Thanks for making our time enjoyable; keep up the good work; we are looking forward to seeing you again!

The taxi ride from Montego Bay Airport to the Rockhouse takes about an hour and a half. It'll cost around 70 bucks. Give Rocky a buzz before you leave your departure city and he'll take care of you. Very friendly and on time. Google Negril and Taxi. If he asks how you found him, tell him the Chinaman who gave him the watch.

If you are the type that gets bitten by mosquitoes, BRING BUG REPELLENT AND CITRONELLA CANDLES! They will make your trip that much more enjoyable. I came prepared and my legs still got molested. The hotel carries them, but of course will charge you more than what you pay at your local Target or Walmart.

The staff is very helpful and friendly. The food at the restaurant is excellent but pricey. Highly recommend the crab tortillas and Old Synting seafood stew. For the best food outside of the hotel (and with much better prices) you gotta eat at Sweet Spice. The portions are generous. I could've eaten their lobster salad three times a day. Sweet Spice is located in downtown Negril almost across the street from the Texaco gas station.

Bring your laptop so you can watch movies or a thick book to read just in case. On my second day the island was hit by thunderstorms all day and the rooms have no tv's and I was bored out of my mind.

For those of you willing to venture outside the confines of the hotel, walk right as you're leaving the hotel and go down maybe a mile or so and you can rent scooters, bicycles, and motorcycles from Banmark. I think they do money exchange to. I rented a bicycle for 24 hours for 10 dollars US.

I wish I could give tips on shopping but I'm not the shopping type. I spent most of my time taking pictures and laying out in the sun.

Make friends with the staff and other hotel patrons. Being on vacation puts fellow tourists in a good mood. Summon the courage to say hello. While staying there I meet some really interesting folks from as far away as Russia.

Oh...if you get to 7 mile beach and some chubby Jamaican named Trevor offers you a mountain horse ride for 40 dollars American, AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. I got ripped off. It wasn't a scenic ride at all. I was led through the hilly slums of Negril riding a horse that was so emaciated it should have been put to sleep. When we got to the top I was led through a "tour" of a burned out plantation that was littered with garbage and horse feces. Instead of coming down the way we came (which included being growled and stalked by the neighborhood dogs), Tarzan my guide took me down a narrow and a steep path in which I fell off my horse and sustained a palm sized gash on my right butt cheek. As I recall Trevor's business card says "The Horseman". Just say NO. If you want to ride horses, pay the extra money and go to Rhoades Hall Plantation.

I took some great shots but instead of attaching them to this review I posted them under the general photo section.

“4th stay at Rockhouse...keeps getting better!”

Rockhouse Hotel

This was our fourth stay here and it was fabulous! We stayed April 16-22 2008 and had the best weather ever. We were so worried that it was going to rain because of all the weather reports we were watching. It only rained once and it was for an hour. The rockhouse has really got it together. The same staff is always there and they treat you like family. The restaurant has really great food and the service is spot on. The reefs around the property have really grown and there is so much more sea life. Snorkeling was much better than it was two years ago. We also saw numerous dolphins there and even a waterspout! We will definitely return as soon as the airlines get their $%*^ together. Thank you again Rockhouse for a memeroable stay.

I stayed at the Rockhouse in March with some girlfriends and I still can't stop raving about my stay! We booked one of the Standard Rooms, which is great for people on a budget. We had a good sized room with a queen sized bed and a twin bed. Our unit was on the end, so we had a side patio and a front patio, each with two Adirondack chairs. Next time, I will definitely splurge on one of the villas, since you get your own patio with lounge chairs (plus easy ocean access). The Rockhouse Restaurant was excellent and very affordable (I highly recommend the crab turnovers!). We had dinner at a few different places (including Norma's), but nothing was as good as the food at the Rockhouse. I was worried that the pool would be crowded and we'd have trouble finding chairs, but that wasn't the case at all. We were always able to get a good spot with an umbrella (very necessary in the hot Caribbean sun). The water is exactly as pictured online, possibly even nicer! Oh yeah, don't miss the spa!

The reviewer who complained about the lack of a beach should have known this before she booked the trip; after all, it's called the "Rockhouse". It's true that you shouldn't venture off the resort alone, but that's true of all resorts in Negril (and probably most of Jamaica). Over all, we had an amazing time and will definitely be traveling back to the Rockhouse! Hopefully next year!

“Loved the Rockhouse”

Rockhouse Hotel

Save Review
5 of 5 stars
South Brunswick, New Jersey

We loved the Rockhouse. The property is beautiful and well maintained. We often saw the management/owners on property "checking things out." That is always a good sign.

We stayed in a loft villa, number 9, which was situated right on top of the water, and we were actually surrounded by water on 3 sides.

The restaurant food and service was excellent, although a bit pricey.

My one piece of advice for anyone looking to stay here... we went with our two children who don't usually get involved in kids clubs or that sort, but my 12 year old son was a little bored. I had been warned of this, but thought it would be fine. As long as the ocean wasn't too rough and the ladders to the ocean were open, we were fine, but one day the ocean got too rough and the only swimming option was the pool. Apparently that was not exciting enough for my boy... Compared to other hotels we;ve stayed at where they have a larger pool, the Rockhouse rectangular pool was too plain.

My 15 year old daughter on the other hand, loved the property.

I have a map of the property, which I made up, and the hotel doesn't provide one, so if anyone has questions about the layout, please contact me. I have tried to include it here as one of my pictures... not sure if it wil turn out.
