I researched Negril online and fell in love with the pictures, descriptions and photos of the Rockhouse. I avidly read trip reports gathering tips for our trip. By the time we checked into the Rockhouse, I felt like I had been there before! We took a 4 seater Cessna thru TimAir from Mongego Bay. It was so beautiful flying about 300 ft above the mountains, through sheets of rain to gently come to rest at a small landing strip across from Sandals in Negril. It was an adventurous way to start our vacation and we loved it! The pilot grabbed us two Red Stripes when we landed and we hopped in a cab for the short ride to the Rockhouse.
My husband and I went with another couple, they had already checked in by the time we arrived. The front desk said there was a mix up and we would be in one Villa for the first night and switch to another villa for the duration. We could have cared less, we were so happy to be there! The villa(s) were so romantic! The sound of the ocean was our backdrop for the entire stay. We spent hours sitting on our patio, laying at the pool, snorkeling, just enjoying each other's company. We sampled every frozen drink on the menu and made a point not to miss happy hour from 5-6 for two for one drinks. We ate lunch poolside most days. We had breakfast sent to our rooms (the porridge! the juice! the coffee!) We ate a few nights at the restaurant, but our most enjoyable meals were at Three Dives Jerk Center (lobster and Red Stripes!), and breakfast at Jus Natural, a vegetarian place a short cab ride away where we dined in the garden eating the freshest fruit and yummiest omlettes and french toast. While eating breakfast there one morning, a man walked by with his grass mats and rugs. He said he made the mats in the villas at the Rockhouse (which coincidentally I just told my husband that morning that I loved them, so soft!), how I wish I would have bought one from him!
Next door to the Rockhouse was Sips n Bites, great jerk chicken. All of these places were very authentic Jamaican kitchens at a fraction of the price of the Rockhouse. We ate at Kuyaba one night, but the service and food was nowhere on par with the other places we dined.
Now, around 9pm each night we had the Rockhouse bring dessert to our villas, AMAZING desserts!
We did venture out to Rick's Cafe one night. After being immersed in near solitude at the Rockhouse, it was a shock to see so many people! It was great people watching and the house reggae band was really fun to listen to and watch.
We took a cab to the beach one day and walked in the surf, but we were eager to get back to the Rockhouse.
Negril is such a beautiful place, and as our Kenny Tours drive back to Mo Bay proved, all of Jamaica is poetic. People have blogged about how poor the country is, but that is not what shined thru to us. There was beauty, kindness and definately a one love vibe.
The staff at the Rockhouse was so awesome. They were like friends to us. Kudos to management for treating them well, as it reflects in their work.
I could ramble on about Negril and the Rockhouse forever, but you'll just have to see for yourself!
Oh, a little advice: you only have to ask one time for things. Your response will always be, "yea mon, no problem", sounds cliche but it's the real thing.
