“The website doesn't do this place justice!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2011

We were looking for a perfect honeymoon location and we found much more we stayed in Villa 19 & 2 .(we stayed in two locations because I wasn't sure about the cliffside Villa)
This place is incredible from check in,food, service all the staff the grounds keepers. The place is so green and lush and well landscaped. It's so peaceful who needs electronic devices at this place. I'm not a huge TV fan so not having it in the room was fine with me,afterall you have the Sea to look at.This is a true GEM and we will be returning.
The Ladies who did our Seaside Massage were incredible!!!!! Miss the Push Cart food...Mmmmmmmmm
Thanks to all the Rock House staff!!!

The Rockhouse Hotel was absolutely amazing. The rooms, staff, grounds, service, food, atmosphere... everything was top notch. Laying out and relaxing on the rocks, snorkeling, and swimming in the pool were highlights - We didn't miss the beach at all. We loved our romantic vacation and hope to come back as soon as possible!!!

Room Tip: Even the standard rooms are great!

The Rockhouse Hotel is situated atop a beautiful rock formation and each of the villa/rooms look out onto the ocean. WIth the grandeur of nature surrounding you and a peaceful atmosphere (and spa), you'd expect it to cost an arm and a leg. Instead this reasonably priced hotel fits the budget and offers the experience you never thought you could afford.

While you're there, you HAVE to have dinner at their restaurants.

This is a wonderful boutique hotel, beautifully constructed and maintained, wonderful professional staff who carry out their daily tasks with Jamaican charm and friendliness. The atmosphere is almost other-worldly - it is so magical. The restaurants are very good, and the prices are pretty reasonable. I could go on and on - just stay here!

My husband and I were here for our 2nd anniversary and absolutely loved it. We stayed in Room 9, and it felt like we were the only people there (until we went for dinner & drinks). Truly enjoyed the experience of kicking back & relaxing to the sound of the waves hitting the rocks. This was a trip where we completely unplugged (didn't use phones or Internet) and it really hit the spot.

This was our first trip to Jamaica, and we were a bit skeptical of having to take a 1 1/2 cab ride from the airport to the resort. We used Kenny Tours, and the ride was hassle free and not as bad as we expected. Upon arrival at the Rockhouse, we were given our complimentary rum punch and taken to our room: Premium Villa #3. This was a great villa with 270 degree views of the ocean. I was not sure if the premium villa was worth the extra cost as they are closer to the road, and do not have private sitting areas directly over the sea. However, we didn't hear the road at all, and preferred the sitting areas around the premium villas vs. the rest of the resort. Also, there are many nooks and crannies to sit for the day throughout the resort and the pool area.

Room:

The villa was very clean and included air conditioning. However, the size of the air conditioning unit was similar to a window unit for a small room in the states, drastically inadequate for the size of the villa (can't imagine it working at all during the summer). They have a system that turns the air off when you leave through the front door. We circumvented this by leaving through the far sliding glass door (meaning our villa was unlocked). However, had we not done this, the room would have been unbearably warm for sleeping. It took almost 24 hours of constant air conditioning to bring the temp down inside to be comfortable. The winds were from the east while we were there and therefore, no circulation from nature through the room. Also worth noting.... If you are easily awakened by sunlight, bring a sleeping mask. Otherwise you will be up everyday at 6. I forgot mine, and couldn't sleep past 7 because the room was so bright.

Keep in mind that although the room is technically not open to the elements, as all windows have screens, there are plenty of opportunities for bugs to get in the room. The shower and bathroom are open and bugs easily come inside if you forget to close the doors to them. Also, the sliding glass doors have gaps up to 1/2" in size that can allow mosquito's and other bugs to get in.

The room included an Ipod dock system that was great for playing music while chilling in the room, however, it did not charge the Ipod while it was docked. One other nicety is the fridge with beer, water, soda, and other items. Unlike other resorts, the Rockhouse does not clobber you with ridiculous pricing for mini bar items. They cost the same as if you got them at the bar.

The only negative about the room was the terrible shower heads in the outdoor shower. They are not only cheap, but water sprayed in every direction. For almost $400/night after taxes and fees, I'd expect a better shower than a local YMCA.

Overall, the room was really nice and was worth the extra cost compared to other categories of rooms.

Grounds:

Even though the resort is on the cliffs, all of the walkways are encompassed in thick tropical vegetation, until you reach the pool. Everything was well manicured, and my wife really enjoyed listening to the gardeners sing as they worked throughout the day. As I said before, there are lots of places to plop down and spend the day reading or just chilling out. Supposedly the resort was almost fully booked, but to us it seemed empty. There really is enough space for everyone: no need to get up at 7 and claim a seat like at the mega resorts. Another nicety is that umbrellas are widely available throughout the seating areas. The sun got hot in the afternoons, and the umbrellas were sturdy in the wind and provided a needed respite from the sun.

Food:

The food was really very good, everywhere we ate. I thought that the best jerk was actually at the pool bar. The jerk chicken was a large breast of chicken with potato salad and a small side salad. The Rockhouse restaurant was also very good, even for breakfast. Pushcart had a small band at 7 each night that played traditional music. Although, we were surprised at how empty Pushcart seemed to be each time we were there.

We ate a Ricks one night, and it was nothing special. The divers were fun to watch, but the food was overpriced and the service not that great.

One recommendation is to walk past the Pushcart restaurant to 3 dives.... The jerk at 3 dives was awesome as was their homemade jerk sauce. Just be aware that it's cash only, and if the sun has set bring a flashlight or a phone with a light.

Overall it was a great trip, and if we decide to return to Negril in the future, we would definitely stay at the Rockhouse. We also stayed on the beach for one night, and it didn't compare to the chill vibe that the cliffs had. Keep in mind that there really isn't alot of action at the Rockhouse. We took this trip for relaxation, and were back in the room by 9 pm almost every night. Both restaurants were never busy, and we never needed reservations anywhere we ate. However, it was the tail end of low season.

Room Tip: Premium Villa #3 and #10 have the best views.

My 14 year old daughter and I stayed at the Rockhouse Oct. 19-22 in villa 18. We were very pleased with the accomadations. We found the room clean and comfortable. Air conditioning worked fine. The outdoor shower was way cool. Mosquito netting is provided and by using ours every night we avoided getting bitten. Besides the mosquitos, we saw an occasional ant and one very small lizard in our room, which is to be expected when staying in the tropics on such a lush natural setting. The grounds are lovely and well maintained. The views are beautiful. We found nearly all the staff to be friendly and helpful. The housekeepers were great.

The Rockhouse restaurant was good, albeit a little pricey. We loved having breakfast there. The Pushcart was great for dinner. The food was reasonably priced and very good and the live music was very enjoyable. Nice views of the sea at both places Service at both establishments (and in Negril in general) is slow by US standards, probably a result of cultural differences and because they assume that since you are on vacation you have plenty of time to enjoy the view and the company you are with.

The spa was fantastic! I haven't exactly spent tons of time hanging around spas, so I am no expert, but let me tell you that we thoroughly enjoyed our treatments. The ladies who took care of us were wonderful, so nice, and very skilled. I would definitly book a massage were I lucky enough to return.

Oct is the rainiest month of the year in Jamaica and it did rain every day, sort of like Florida, a torrential downpour for 30 minutes and then the sun comes out. Also, the water was very choppy making it impossible to swim off the cliffs, and the pool was closed for 1 or 2 days. During that time the hotel provided a free shuttle to the beach.

We were impressed with the social responsibility displayed by the hotel. There were recycling bins available on the property and the hotel has funded improvements and upgrades at the local preschool and elemetary school as well as the public library. I would be willing to bet that this is not common among the many hotels in the area. The Rockhouse offers a tour of the library and of the schools on Thursdays for any guest interested in attending. We attended with one other woman who had generously thought to bring books, school supplies and candy for the kids, It was a definite highlight of our trip!
They also offer to take hotel guests to a local church for services on Sundays. We would have loved to go, but had to leave early for the airport on Sunday.

A few words about Negril in general...My daughter and I both loved it there. We walked all over Negril including areas that were off the tourist path and by using common sense and common courtesy we had no problems. We found that the best way to deal with unwanted offers was to say "No thanks" and keep walking. We got some great and very reasonably priced food from beach venders, including freshly cooked lobsters for $8, hot vegetable patties for only $1, delicious rum cakes and coconut pies and fresh bananas, sugar cane, and coconut water, delivered directly to our beach chairs. How can you complain about that? Furthermore, contrary to all predictions, nobody tried to sell us marijuana.

If you are looking for souvenirs a great option is Juddy's Variety Store directly across from the entrance to the Rockhouse Restaurant. She is super nice and has cool, good quality, handmade hats, bathing suits, jewelry, crafts and art, along with the usual tourist stuff at reasonable prices. We were very happy with our purchases from her. Her shop has been there for 30 years. Her parents ran it before she took over. Also, Courtney,a rasta guy just down the street from her, does hand carved wood crafts that are really nice. We bought a beautiful carved wooden mask from him. Finally, at Presley's, a little, reservations only, restaurant next door we got huge servings of great food at a good price.

Although it was a definite splurge for us, we would definitly return to Negril and the Rockhouse Hotel!
