“Great place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

I spent 2 days in February and would stay there again. I was in the G building and it was clean and nice to have a frig. The staff was friendly and made you welcome. The bar staff was as good as it gets. The food there was good also the open @ 8am.and worth the wait since i get up at 6am.

Room Tip: Great locations of the rooms off the beach Quiet and large rooms

We have been going to Jamaica since 1986 and have made Whitesands our home away from home for several years now. This hotel is Jamaican owned and family run and treat their guests like family. I hesitate to even write a review for fear I won't be able to book our room for future vacations as there may be "no room at the inn" . This little hotel has a loyal following. We have met and made many good friends here, local Jamaicans, staff and fellow travelers. Because of the staff and the way they have treat us and the ragtag crew I've introduced to Whitesands, we would never stay anywhere else. I often wonder why they put with us??? Lol. The fact that you can actually have a conversation with local people including the beach vendors makes this place special. Most of these people are hard working and just trying to make a decent living. You show respect, you receive respect back. People need to visit a school, talk to local people, buy a newspaper from the newspaper guy and a pack of smokes from the cigarette guy. Sit at the bar and have conversation with Tony or Paul. You will truly meet some wonderful people and share some heartwarming moments with them. Ask them about their families and the cost of living in their country, including the political climate. They will be happy to "tune you in" and have an intelligent, lively, friendly conversation with you. The charm of Whitesands is that it ISN'T an AI. The only people riding around in a golf cart is Mr. Moo & Judy. And if you don't think that the owner isn't watching over the property...rethink that, because he knows everything. I feel perfectly comfortable with security, especially Lidon. He looks after us well. We love the hugs and warm welcome we get from Francis, Henry, Kay, Peaches, Janet, Valerie, Kerri-Ann and all the other staff at Whitesands when we arrive and some even shed a tear when we leave. They may be tears of joy, but we prefer to think that they are sad to see us go. No one needs a wake up call to go home. Use your cell phone, they all have alarms on them and if you miss the call...no problem, you get another day in paradise. Francis - make sure we're booked in for 2014 because we'll be back! Everyting is Everyting! And Whitesands is everyting to us!

Room Tip: Don't sweat about no room safes. Lockboxes are in office. Who's going to break into your r...

That is such an amazing trip review and post that I am a bit speechless. Thank you for taking the time and for such kind words. We have been hosting clients for over 40 years but there are times like these when you read such wonderful words that you need to take a step back and appreciate all our amazing clients and friends who have stayed with us. Stay warm this winter and we so look forward to hosting you again. And you are right, if you want to stay during the winter months, you better book way far in advance to get a room.
Cheers,

Stayed Feb 9 to 16 2013.

This is a great basic 2 star on a fantastic beach in a great location in Negril Ja.

Stayed in Junior suite. On beach side. Nice bedroom with flat screen. Basic washroom. Basic kitchen. Very basic living area - good for vegging. Relatively private.

The hotel rooms are are a great value -$55 - $70/night.

Go and enjoy!

Owners and staff very nice - no problems.

Highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: Away from road is best.

I hesitate to do this only because I don't want to ruin my chances of getting a reservation. This is my home away from home every January. I wait all year long to return to heaven on earth, Negril and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Francis and his staff are wonderful. I have nothing bad to say about this place. It is my favorite place on earth, wonderful staff, the people of Jamaica remind me of the joy and beauty in this world!!!!! Till next January my Jamaican family. Respect and love from Philadelphia

Room Tip: Garden side is quieter, you have to cross a road to get to the beach.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

We stayed at White Sands for 9 nights the first week in November 2012. It was just my husband and I. Our first impression was how quaint our room was (we stayed in a standard garden room not on the beach side). We really liked the exposed beams on the ceilings and the french doors opening to the wonderful balcony. The room was basic and functional. The room had bed with a night stand and lamp on each side, dresser with mirror, chair, armoire, stand and mini-fridge. We spent our first night in room 210 with a full size bed. After spending the night with my bum hanging off the bed and my husband's feet hanging off, we spoke to the Manager, Francis, after checking the availability offered us the room next to ours which had a king size bed (room 211). All was right with the world :)

Pros:
- Great Value: price is low for a perfect location as you are right in the middle of 7 Mile Beach.
- Better then an all-inclusive as you can pick and choose where you want to eat.
- On site restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. Food was excellent, good size portions, reasonable price. Horace is an awesome cook!!! Try the Aki and Salt Fish! Jennifer was very accomodating and always prompt with service and smile!
- Best drinks on the beach!!!! Great 2-for-1 drink specials.
- Office staff friendly and helpful!
- Owners are on-site and very involved. We had the opportunity to speak with Henry, the owner, on several occasions. He wanted us to be happy with our stay, even offered us a ride to the airport, so we didn't have to pay for a transfer, as he was flying out the same day. Shout out to Judy!!
- They have security on the beach during the day to ensure you are comfortable and not bothered by peddlers. Our stuff was always safe. Additional security at night.
- If you are staying on the garden side don't worry. The property is located on both sides of the street with access to the beach within several hundred feet.
- A/C in the rooms work great!
- Updates to the rooms were being done while we were there. This never impacted our stay. They actually waited until we left our room before they started.
- Walking distance to many great local restaurants and bars.

Cons:
- No wash clothes in bathroom.
- No microwave
- No inroom safe (there are actual safe deposit boxes in the office) FREE of charge.
- Lumpy pillows

All in all the cons are very minor for the value you receive. Depending on how you look at this, for us it didn't matter, there is no phone or TV in the room. We will definately stay there again.

Get more for your money and a more authentic experience by staying here versus an all-inclusive.

Thank you for your detailed trip report. We appreciate your Pros and Cons section ( very well stated ) Glad you were able to meet the owners and spend time chatting. It is what makes White Sands fun and relaxing. We appreciate your business and look forward to hosting you again.
Regards,
White Sands Negril

PS
Little comment about the washcloths. We have them, but so few people use them that we do not stock the rooms with them. But if you ask for them, housekeeping will bring them every day.

While the Jamaican tourist bureau has coined the phrase, it is also very specifically befitting WHITE SANDS.

Henry Moo-Young and his family offer a cozy haven in Negril for a multitude of return visitors. With a tidy 45 rooms, WHITE SANDS offers accommodations both on the beach side and across the street, in a lovely setting with garden views, that are comfortable and extremely reasonable.

There is a no-nonsense beachfront bar with daily 2 for 1 specials.

Sadly the White Sands restaurant is the weak link in this otherwise delightful, family-run operation but there are other options within easy walking distance.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and for your kind words. Our grill has limited service for breakfast and lunch. I agree that there is room for improvement with respect to getting food served more quickly. We appreciate your honest feedback, it shows you care, which is extremely important to us. I hope the property will work on this soon.
