GLN is a beautiful resort! We've been traveling to the Riviera Maya for the past 8 years and decided to try something new and the GLN compared nicely to the RM in most every way. The resort is very well layed-out with rooms very close to the beach. We stayed at the clothing optional side and had a very nice room overlooking the CO beach and pool. The room was average size with a flat-screen TV, sitting area and jacuzzi-tub/shower. The balcony was tiny, but if you shifted things around a bit, you could negotiate two chairs out there. A perfect place to begin/end your day. Housekeeping did a good job each day - with towel-art, flower-pedals on the bed, replacing towels/drinks, etc. The CO beach is well secluded - away from the larger and more expansive 7-mile stretch of beach. It was also tiny and too cramped for our liking. You're pretty much right next to everyone - which is a little overwhelming when you've got people prancing around without clothes all day. Would've been a quite bit nicer had the beach been bigger and better spread out. There were anywhere from 10-30 people on the beach at all times ranging from topless to fully unclad. People were pretty laid-back, mostly mid-aged (35-50) and it was pretty much accepted you could do whatever portion of CO you were comfortable with. It would also be nicer if they tolerated topless-only on the non-CO beach...so you didn't have to "expose yourself" to the full-nudity thing if you didn't want to. We chose to avoid the formal restuarants and stuck with the breakfast buffet and to two other restuarants (Reggae and Timberhouse). Both served very good food - the jerk chicken/pork and lamb chops were outta this world! Drinks everywhere were really watered down - which is very much unlike Mexico. Liquor brands stunk as did the selection of typical resort-like tropical drinks. The bartenders seemed very dis-interested in pleasing their patrons and could be pretty rude if you asked them to do anything out of their normal routine. With respect to other hotel staff, the guys at the CO pool serving up burgers and chicken at lunchtime were also extremely rude - - as was the bartender. Just not friendly nor giving a damn about providing normal good service. It was like they were teed-off at having to work at all. This is way, way different than Mexico - where the staff can't do enough for you! Hotel check-in was terrific - the best we've ever experienced!
Now here's the bad-rap regarding Apple Vacations. This was our second time using Apple in ten years of traveling - - it will also be our last! They initially screwed-up an online booking made via their website on a Saturday night which cost us about $600 more to book the following Monday. They claimed their computers were down and that they didn't receive the confirmation - - even though we had an e-mail print out showing the confirmation. We had to re-book, now there were no direct flights available and a non-direct flight was costing me more money than originally confirmed! Unbelievable! Next, with this new booking, they told us we would need to check-in at O'Hare at the USAirways counter for departure. We als re-confirmed this within 24 hours of departure through Apple. When we arrived at the airport 2.5 hours before our flight, we stood in line 90 minutes at US Air then when reaching the counter we were told the flight was switched to United and that we were in the worng line and terminal. Running to the next terminal we got there about 40 minutes before the flight was leaving - - the United folks initially told us we were too late and could not board the flight. After pleading with them, they agreed to let us on, but said we could not check any luggage (carry-on only)! They made us empty our suitcases into plastic bags and forfiet/dispose our luggage. Then, as all our toiletries were planned to be checked, we lost them too at security! Security was a long line too - - and after running all the way to the gate with two carry-ons and two plastic bags filled with clothes (each of us towing about 60 lbs each), we made the flight with only moments to spare! Needless to say, we were completely exhausted and stressed out! Add to all this we were out about $250 for the luggage and another $100 or so for the lost stuff. Upon arrival to the hotel, we met with the Apple rep there who was very apologetic and empathetic. We asked her to confirm our return flight(s) to avoid the same thing on the way back. We didn'e get a response from her until the next day - - when she said our return flight had also changed (about 2 hours later than what our itinerary said). Thanking her for checking into things, we went about our business thinking all was well. Then, for spits and giggles, I figured I'd have the hotel concierge double-check things - - when we found our flight time HAD NOT changed and all things on the itinerary were correct. She even asked US Air to follow-up their confirmation with an e-mail which we received a copy of. So, again, had we listed to the buffoon Apple Rep. we'd probably still be navigating our way back home.
Apple Vacations stink! I have no confidence that they have any clue to what they're doing. I doubt seriously that they'll do anything to bring us whole on this thing. And, I'll not schedule another vacation through them - ever! I hope everyone that reads this will consider what happened to us and think long and hard before booking a trip through them.
Finally, to provide a comparison between Mexico and Jamaica, we would choose Mexico hands-down over Jamaica. The beaches are prettier, the sand is nicer, the water blue-er, the people nicer, the hotels are comparable/slightly nicer and the drinks beat GLN hands down. Shopping in Mexico is better, the food selections (on resort and off) are better, and we felt alot safer in Playa Del Carmen than anywhere off the resort in Jamaica. The prices are pretty similar - - in our opinion, go to Mexico, it beats Jamaica hands-down!
