We just returned from the Grand Lido, Negril. If you travel to the GLN with the proper expectations, you will truly enjoy your stay. Considering the mixed reviews on this site, I would say that many people visited the GLN with improper expectations.
First, we are talking about Jamaica, here. If you are expecting the opulence or tranquility of the South Pacific, Hawaii, or the more exclusive Caribbean islands, you will be sorely disappointed. However, travel to Jamaica can have its benefits, including direct flights, great air fares, numerous flights and the possibility of last-minute travel. By Jamaica standards, the GLN is an outstanding resort.
Second, this is not a five-star resort. If you are expecting marble, leather and fresh flowers and fruit in your room, GLN is not your resort and Jamaica is not your island. Your stay at the GLN will be very enjoyable if you have four-star expectations. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff is abundant and quite pleasant, and the grounds are beautiful. The food at most of the restaurants is very good, although certainly not five-star caliber.
An excellent example of our improper expectations was the French restaurant, Piacere. Having read the reviews on this site, we made reservations a week in advance, and traveled with the required attire. We heard other guests told that there were “no openings” on the reservation list for dinner, so we felt wise and privileged to dine there on Saturday night. However, a “look” at the reservation list revealed less than twenty reservations for that entire evening, and two-thirds of the tables were empty during our two-hour visit. The food and service were outstanding – if you were comparing them to a typical four-star restaurant at an all-inclusive resort. If you have ever dined at a fine French restaurant in a large American City, or any fine restaurant in a major city, for that matter, you will be sorely disappointed if you expect the same food and service. The staff at Piacere can neither explain nor pronounce most of the items on the menu, much less the wine list (despite the fact that the wines were available only at extra charge, most of the few listed wines were not available, and only one red French wine was in stock on our visit). The raspberry crème brulee, however, was awesome by any standards.
One pleasant surprise at the GLN, which I did not see mentioned in any review here, is the entertainment. It was terrific! A wonderful cellist performed every morning at the buffet breakfast, as well as in the early evening. A solo saxophonist roamed the various courtyards in the afternoon. Excellent bands and singers performed each evening.
For the full advertised price, or by five-star standards, we would rate the GLN only average, at best. However, if part of a discounted package, or if Jamaica fits best into your travel plans and you are only expecting a four-star resort, you will be very satisfied.
