This was our first time to the resort- we went here on our honeymoon using the groupon deal. We were here 12-16 August. I was informed by one of the resort workers that the resort is currently undergoing renovations and will be expanded later on. These include the pool, rooms, and the main dining area. I believe after these changes the place will be much better.
Our room was very old. I wish the only problem with the room was the ugly, outdated decor, but I am afraid not. During our short stay we killed 4 spiders in our room, all about the size of a half dollar. We also learned quickly not to leave any of our used glasses in our room, otherwise the whole area would be crawling with little sugar ants.
The TV was also outdated and very small- not a major concern, obviously, but the times we decided to cool off from outside, it would have been nice to have a better tv.
The room cleaning staff would not clean our room around the same time-frame each day so sometimes we would return to our room after lunch and still not have clean towels for the day. We would have just reused the towels from the day before, but with the high humidity, the towels never dry once they become wet.
This was also very outdated, which would have been fine, except that there were other problems. The shower door did not prevent water from leaking out, so our bathroom floor would always be wet after showering, and using towels to try to soak up the water would only work so well.
Some days the hot water was fine, while other days we had no hot water at all.
The bathrooms have "windows" which are at eye level, so if you cannot get them to close completely, people passing by your room can see into your bathroom.
We could hear our neighbors when they were in their shower, usually singing. Maybe the renovations will try to soundproof the bathroom better.
The food overall was really great. We ate at all of the restaurants except for the French. The Japanese restaurant is a must! It is Hibachi style and if you have Ricardo as your chef you are in for some great entertainment and singing while your food is being cooked. Ricardo and our food/wine made this dinner our favorite by far, and possible our favorite experience at the resort. Just make sure you make a reservation upon your arrival for the Japanese restaurant. It is only open on certain days.
The only food experience I had which was negative was the breakfast each morning. There was variety, however, I found that the quality was just not there. I resorted to eating the muesli, and while I was eating it, looked down at my spoon and saw a bug in it. I removed the bug, and continued to eat. My next spoonful had a bug in it too. I ended up finding about 10 bugs in my entire bowl. My advice is to just be weary of the food that is sitting out with no cover (most of it) because the bugs flying around do land on the food and with something like muesli, they aren't going to be going anywhere.
With all drinks being included, we tried a variety of drinks. My favorite was the Bob Marley (frozen). Make sure you try it at least once! On our last night we sat at the bar in the main dining area and talked with one of the bar tenders. We had a great time learning about Jamica from him.
The beach is nothing to get excited about. The chairs are gross and the sand is not impressive at all. I have seen much better beaches on the US's east coast. The water is amazing though! You can see straight through to the bottom. There is a guy on a jet ski who constantly harasses you, though, trying to get you to "go for a ride". There is also a guy right by the beach entrance form the resort who will ask you to buy weed. This got really annoying. We just wanted to enjoy ourselves without being bothered. Another downside is that you cannot just go for a stroll along the beach without being stopped every 2 minutes either to be asked to buy weed or to buy something from the locals. So if are like me, and enjoy taking a beach walk, this is not the place for that.
Besides the room service previously mentioned, the service was what made our stay tolerable despite the resort's shortfalls. Everyone was friendly, and it all seemed very genuine. Our bag was lost at the airport and the concierge, Renae, helped us talk with the airport to get our bag delivered to us.
Don't bother unless you are into cheesy stuff. Once the entertainment started we would leave because it was just cringe worthy.
I don't know if we will ever go back here, but with renovations, it could be a possibility.
