My friend and I went to the Riu from the 7th of July -12th of July. We booked through Apple Vacations and they were there the minute we stepped off the plane. When we arrived at the hotel it was fabolous. Nice open lobby, beautiful view of the ocean, and nice hotel staff. When we went to check in, we were greeted by Chris the assistant manager. I told him it was my birthday so he upgraded us to a junior suite (we only paid for a standard room). We thought this was great! We immediately went to our room and checked out the beautiful hotel. The place was clean as ever except for ants that were everywhere but its the caribbean..who cares!! The staff and the ambience of this place was great. The next day, we went to the beach and did the reggae dance class on the beach. Very entertaining. The entertainment crew is fabulous here. There was always something to do or games to play even music and it made you feel as if this was a party place. That night we had reservations at Tushima, the japanese restuarant, and we planned on going to Margaritaville afterwards. Before we left for dinner, we surprisingly got a phone call from Chris the assistant manager asking if we were having a good time. He also asked if we had dinner reservations as well as if we were going to Margaritaville afterwards. My friend told him we did have reservations and that we were going to Margaritaville. Little did we know he was just confirming that we weren't going to be in the room. When we returned from margaritaville, our key cards didnt work. We went to the front desk and he reactivated them. We went back to the room and they still didnt work so we asked the front desk clerk to have an escort to the room. He told his co worker, Prince, to escort us. This time, Prince had a master key in his hand just in case we couldnt get in. When we still couldnt get in using the key cards, Prince opened the door and to our shock the power was off. We had to return to the front desk and wait for maintanence.

Once maintanence showed (which was about 10mins..no problem) he did something to turn the power on and that's when my friend noticed the tv in the room was gone. My lugguage was supposed to be closed and locked since I had a lock on the bag but the bag was open and I had clothes and things thrown around. Our safe was open as well with all our money missing, as well as our cell phones, and my friend's ipod. We immediately called security and when he came, he wrote a report and called the police. No police showed up. The front desk person gave us a new room to sleep in since it was late and the next day we would have to speak with the police.

The moment we woke up we went immediately to our apple vacations rep and told him the situation and he got the manager. The manager called the police and the police came within 15mins. The officers determined the room was not broken into since the door was broken. No one knew we werent going to be in the room except for Chris, the assistant manager who called our room. Out of all the suites, we were the only room to be broken into? Coincidence..i think not! The thieves even stole the damn tv out the room!! How does one not notice someone carrying a tv in their hands? The only way to explain this is if someone in the staff knew where to go to not be seen. Anyways, when we spoke to the manager demanding compensation, she said the most she could offer us was a taxi ride to whatever hotel we wanted to stay at as well as a 5 night free stay at whichever Riu hotel we wanted in the Caribbean. However, we would have to sign a piece of paper to say that the hotel was not liable for our stolen merchandise or money. My friend and I told her to shove it up her a**. She then got a staff member to drive us to the Riu in montego bay because we refused to stay there. If it wasnt for the entertainment and the bartenders..I would have given this place 1 star. We only stayed there 2 days because of the robbery but if it wasnt for the theft that took place, we would have rated it 4 stars. The entertainment was great, the food was good, and the cleanliness of the place was superb.

I traveled to Ocho Rios and stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios July 5-July 12. It was one of the best vacations I have had in my life. I traveled with my husband and two other couples. Besides the bus ride to/from the airport, we had a wonderful vacation.

The rooms were your basic hotel rooms, but very well maintained. Our housekeeper took great care of us and always made sure we had fresh towels and clean sheets.

We enjoyed the pool and beach. I never had a problem getting a drink during the day. I would recommend taking your own insulated mug to keep your drink cold and to keep you from having to go to the bar all day. The bartenders were always happy to fill up my extra-large mug.

The food was excellent. Breakfast was amazing and we loved the jerk chicken from the beach! The Plantation Buffet was repetitive for lunch, but it wasn't bad. We ate at two of the gourmet places for dinner, Mandalay and Mammee Bay (the steakhouse). We actually ate at the steakhouse twice. The food was excellent and the portions were decent size. I would order the mixed grill from there because you can try a little bit of everything that is served. Mandalay is Asian cuisine and it wasn't anything special. The St. Ann's buffet was great for dinner. There was always something different to try. I especially like trying the different types of seafood.

Entertainment was FABULOUS. With the exception of the Grease show, the girls and guys of the entertainment crew were great. They danced, sang, and really tried to interact with the crowd. On Saturday nights they have fire dancers/eaters on the beach, as well as a huge bonfire.

We did the Dunns River Booze Cruise with Cool Runnings. We snorkeled, cruised, hiked the Falls, and then cruised back. It was really fun and definitely worth the money we paid. Make sure you take cash if you do an excursion like this. There are some souvenirs/photos you can buy after you're done hiking if you're interested.

Overall, I was impressed with the resort. I have been to all-inclusive resorts in Aruba, Punta Cana, and Puerto Rico and was most pleased with the RIU Ocho Rios. My husband and I have already started talking about our next RIU vacation.

We stayed at the Riu Ocho Rios after 5 days at Breezes in Runaway Bay. We booked thru Discount All Inclusive for a great price and they gave us excellent advice in planning this vacation.

The Riu is big. I mean really big. About 900 rooms spread out over a large property. We liked the beach a lot. Clean, white sand. Calm on most days. The pools were also excellent. Big and varied. Riu is an excellent value for the money. It's also very cosmopolitan and this resort had guests from all over the world. About 60% are from the US. The rest are mostly European and Canadian.

We liked the specialty restaurants. The Sushi Restuarant and the Steak House were very good. We didn't try any others. The buffets were well stocked and replenished quickly. The guests were to put it diplomatically a bit aggressive in the buffet line, especially at breakfast if you didn't arrive early enough. Many don't realize you can go back for seconds and feel obliged to pile their plates high and often carry two at a time. Others seem to think it is ok to shout at the top of their lungs across the dining room , as long as it is in an uncommon foreign language. Not the fault of the hotel of course. Regardless we found the food to be high quality and varied. We also enjoyed the pizzeria.

If you'd like to try a local Jamaican hot spot try Scotchie's Jerk Center in Ocho Rios. $40 feeds 4 people very well with red stripe included.

We did the Bobsled run at Mystic mountain which was excellent. So was the Zip Line tour. Go on Saturday or Sunday though. The cruise ships dock during the week and they overwhelm Mystic mountain with guests. This hotel is also close to Dunn River which is a nice attraction to see.

The nightlife was fun and varied and appropriate for all ages.

My only complaint was the Air Conditioning. It just couldn't keep up. The repairman said it was an eco friendly cold water system and it doesn't really cool the room down all that much. We turned it on when we checked in and found it took at least 12 hours to get it down to 85F. Once it cooled off it was variable but never below 80F.

A word of caution. The end of the day featured a clean up of the pool deck area and beach. They cleaned up folks who passed out from drinking. Some of them were quiet comical. Others were comatose. We actually were quiet entertained by this nightly event but those with small children may want to avoid that area during this period.

This hotel has the wow factor. Immediately as you arrive you are made to feel welcome. I have only one complaint. This is directed at my self. I should have spent the whole of my holiday there instead of going to a below standard poor excuse for a hotel. I would recommend this hotel to eveyone who wants good service, courteous staff, clean stocked room.
