Let me start off by saying that the RIU Ochos Rios was not our first choice of stay. Last year we went to Cancun and stayed at the Marriot CasaMagna (beautiful hotel), and the RIU didn’t seem to match up. It was also the first time we were staying in an all inclusive resort (we usually like to venture away from the hotel and experience the real deal). We went ahead with it anyways after reading many good reviews of the hotel, and we are so glad that we did! The RIU made my trip to Jamaica the best vacation I have ever had. Whether you are 6 or 60, this hotel has something for you.
THE HOTEL – the hotel was amazing. Pictures truly do not do it justice; you need to see it in person! The resort is huge, with two pools on opposite sides, 7 restaurants, a kiddie area, central theater, sports bar, swim up bars, disco, you name it. The hotel and beach were kept very clean and the grounds are beautiful. The hotel is very OPEN, meaning there are barely any windows around. We were a little surprised by this at first, but it grows on you. You get to actually feel the nice breeze from the ocean, and it makes you feel more connected to the beautiful beach around you. The rooms were pretty nice, an ok size. The towels are replaced everyday if you put your towels in the tub (if you just hang them up they think you want to reuse to save water) and the mini bar is restocked every 2 days. WARNING – keep your balcony door shut or else the AC turns off automatically. It is lovely to hear the waves of the ocean at night.
THE FOOD – The food was pretty good, great variety. Although, if you befriend the chefs, they also make special orders for your party. There is a continental breakfast every morning at ST Ann with everything you can imagine. For lunch the Italian pizzeria is open from 12 pm to about 6. There is also a poolside eatery. For dinner you can reserve a place at the restaurants (there is a steakhouse, gourmet, Chinese, and Japanese restaurant). These places require a reservation the DAY OF between a certain time period (the earlier the better) and all it takes is a phone call. Every night there is also a buffet at St Anns. The food takes a little getting used to. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t bad by any means, but it tastes a little different. Some people don’t even notice it, but I could. Despite that, I ate my heart out while staying at the RIU
TH STAFF- Awesome people! I must say, Jamaicans are the friendliest people I have ever met. They come up to talk to you all the time, and are so carefree. They truly do their best to please everyone. I am fairly young (upper teens) so I did have some people flirt around with me, but never to a point where it was bothersome. It was all in good fun. One thing about tipping: no one there expects you to tip them, but they greatly appreciate it if you do. They take even better care of you (if that’s possible). However, if you choose not to tip, you will NEVER receive bad service. Everything there is really “no problem”. My aunt was not happy with her room, so they switched her into another one by that afternoon.
THE ENTERTAINMENT – THE BEST PART OF MY TRIP. I met some amazing people from the animation team. From water aerobics, to dance lessons, to volleyball tournaments and games, they made sure everyone had something to do. They also put on shows every night for us in the central theater. I loved the African show, however I heard the Michael Jackson show and beach party are the best (unfortunately I missed those two). Before the shows they have an hour set aside for pre-show activities. The entertainment people ask guests to come up and dance with them, and there is also some sort of activity going on on stage (usually games and competition). BEWARE- if you befriend people from the entertainment crew, they will pull you up to participate. However, they will never forcefully drag you up there, so if you sternly say no they will leave. There is something different every night, and they work very hard to try and interact with everyone. There are some talented dancers in that crew that can do ballet, jazz, hip hop, stunts and flips, everything! Although the animation crew is new (most of the older team that was there left for whatever reasons) they are quickly catching up to the older team. Special Shout-outs to Jerome, Rohan, and Mikhail,,,great people!
THINGS TO DO – There are plenty things to doin the resort itself. There is paddle boating, kayaking, snorkeling, and wind sailing all for free. For an additional charge you can also go scuba diving, parasailing, jet skiing, etc. As for nightlife, there is the famous Margaritaville not too far from the resort. There is also a disco PACHA in the resort itself. The club is nice; it doesn’t get full until around 1 in the morning. The DJ does a great job with the music, its basically everything you hear back home, plus the reggae of course.
EXCUSIONS – We did three things in Jamaica: horseback riding, canopy tour, and dunns river falls
The horseback riding we did wit hooves tours, and they were great. There is a part of 8 people, with 2 guides. The guides take you through a forest like area, down to the beach and into the water. Riding the horses in the water is magnificent! There is a lady that takes pics of you on the horses, and they are actually worth the money to purchase ( I believe only 10 US dollars). The guides also do not mind videotaping your whole journey for you if you give them your video camera. Just make sure to tip them well because they do an excellent job.
The canopy tour we did with Chukka Tours. I have always wanted to go ziplining, so this was awesome for me. We went onto 9 different lines, all through the forest. The equipment is modern and very safe. There are also multiple employees at each station to make sure the ride goes smoothly
The one thing you CAN NOT SKIP, is the Dunns River Falls. You will never experience anything like this anywhere else. You get to actually climb a waterfall! It is such a beautiful scene, and the water is very clean. The guides know the falls very well so they take you through the safest route. NOTE – they took a professional video of the group the whole time, and we bought it. But it honestly was not worth it. We also had a guide video tape the whole journey for us and he did a GREAT job. He only focused on my family, rather then the other 20-25 people also there. I think the better bet is to give your video camera to the guide ( and they will not get it wet at all) and give it to him to tape rather then purchasing the professional video. He captured everything for us, from the slips and falls, to the climbing. Just make sure to tip that person well, because they do a great job, and if they are saving you some money, then why not?
ALSO, you need water shoes, we bought ours in Jamaica for about 5 bucks on Main Street, and it was a lot cheaper then what we find here.
Overall, I had the best time of my life. I forgot about everything while I was there. The week went by so quickly, and I was not ready to go back home at all. If I could, I would hop on a plane right now and go back! This island is truly paradise, and honestly, its what you make of it. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for some fun in the sun =).
If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact.
ALSO PLEASE READ- for anyone that has been to the RIU recently, if you have any contact information of the entertainment staff, please send it to me. Particularly, Jerome, Rohan, and Mikhail. I really wanted to send them pictures and unfortunately I never got a chance to get emails. Also, I would love to know who is still working there for when I go back!
