“Beautiful, but thought it would be better..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

I know this reveiw is going to come off as negative, but the resort really wasn't bad. We just paid alot more more this holiday than we have for better experiences elsewhere. We were looking for a 5 star resort to share with friends. This was our first trip to Jamaica.
The room was clean, though we had a bug problem three nights. Housekeeping came and sprayed twice which helped. We found it noisy in the hallway outside our room, which we found out later was right beside the service elevator and ice machine. We had to be careful with our safe, or it wouldn't open. We had to have the handyman come and beat on it to get it open. Our friends two floors above us had no problems with bugs or noise.
Our complaints were addressed quickly and politely," no problem mon".
The buffets were great, tonnes of selection. We were disappointed with the a la cartes which were just themed buffets. We were only able to book two of our three due to excursions, the Asian and the Steak house. We have been to other 5 star resorts in Mexico and the Dominican and found the a la cartes in Jamaica to be quite disapointing. Riu Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is my comparison point where the a la cartes were fabulous. Where you actually order three courses and they are brought to your table. I don't feel like I am being spoiled if I have to get up and schlep along a buffet line.
The pools were clean and always easy to find a chair as long as you didn't wait until the afternoon, as they would all be saved by then. Chairs on the beach were always easy to find. This is a large beach, with beautiful sand, crystal clear water and the best snorkeling we have ever had on hotel grounds, my husband saw a ray! The beach was covered in seaweed for a couple of days, we were surprised is wasn't cleaned up sooner.
Bar service was quick, with few line ups.
The Jerk chicken shack is so good, don't miss it. Usually each day from noon to 2.
One of the best assets of this resort is it's entertainment staff, they are really earning their pay. They were friendly throughout the day, and work really hard to make sure that everyone is having a great time.
Again, due to the cost of this vacation we had high expectations. We would go back again if we got a better price.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor, away from ice machine and elevators. Your travel representative at the resor...

All I can say is that it was amazing. Staff was great, Scuba Caribe staff were expecially great. If you see them, tell them Paige says hi!

The rooms ceilings were weird.

Great entertainment!

Food was amazing anywhere you went!
Booked with Sunwing.
I suggest you should do Mystic Mountain, Dunn's river falls, but don't do it through Cool Runnings, do it through Scuba Caribe! Way cheaper, same experience! Also, go into town!

Coffee is amazing there!

We have just come back from a family wedding at the ClubHotel RIU Ocho Rius. The wedding went off without a hitch and the weather was perfect on the day. The couple were married on the beach (you have a choice of two locations garden or beach) a nice touch was the fact that the wedding area was roped off and the staff prevented random people in the shorts and swim wear from wandering into your photos. If you are using the local photography service for your wedding please keep an eye on what they are doing as lots of photos were taken with people’s eyes closed, half looking at the camera and half looking elsewhere etc.. some of the poses they wanted were also a bit cheesy..

The food at the hotel was excellent, I lost count of how many places there were at the resort to eat during the day and night (all serving a comprehensive international cuisine) equally, there is a bar around every corner. All the staff were friendly and contrary to the negative reports good service was not dependent on a tip!! The jerk hut on the beach was also very good. If you know your Jamaican cuisine you will think the jerk chicken served on the beach was not up to scratch however, mild or spicy sauces were available for you ‘jerk’ your chicken to your taste which I think is the right thing to do as the real traditional jerk spice can be an acquired taste - for the Brits the nearest comparison is similar to eating a strong vindaloo. The hotel has two main pools one very boisterous, the other more sedate. It also has it’s own sandy beach which is right on your door step. One of the good things that has happened here is that the local hawkers are only allowed to sell their wares from the sea so these guys can walk along the beach but they can’t leave the water to sell you anything, that way you don’t have people pestering you whilst you are laying on your sun bed.

During our time there the Brits were vastly outnumbered by the Canadians and Americans who clearly partake in the local Rum to excess... but don’t let that put you off it’s worth observing for the amusement factor. There is a choice of restaurants to eat in during the evening (no cover charge) you can book as many as you want from 10.00am each day in the main foyer. Get there early as the queue does get long..

The hotel is clean all the public areas were constantly being swept or mopped. The bedrooms were clean - no bugs or ants to be found. I do agree with some of the comments that the rooms are now looking a bit dated in terms of decor and furniture.

We booked with Thomson’s but flew in a First Choice aeroplane. It is a 10 hour flight and I recommend that if your budget can take it that you upgrade to Premium Class on the flight as it does make a world of difference to your flying experience. NB: It is a two hour transfer from the Airport but made all the more pleasant by the coach driver pumping out the Bob Marley classics on the journey.

Overall this was a really good break in terms of the resort and hotel and if you do decide to go there leave the stiff upper lip behind and go with the flow and you will be guaranteed a really great holiday. Try the rum punch with extra rum it numbs any pain.....

NB: There is a departure tax of $22US or £15. (at the time of writing) Payable at the check in desk at the airport. Despite me asking about this in my local Thomson travel agency told me this was included in the price of the holiday which it is not.

Returned home from a week in paradise on 2/10/13. We traveled with 2 other couples to Jamaica on an 5 Apple Square Deal. Stayed at the Riu Ocho Rios. This was our second stay here. Had a wonderful time. Would return to this resort again in a heartbeat! The resort was very well kept. The grounds were beautiful and well taken taken care of. The resort is very clean and the staff is very friendly. Housekeeping was great and rooms were very comfortable. Food was great and steakhouse was delicious. Did not have trouble finding something delicious to eat. Must try the jerk chicken cooked on the beach near the Plantation restaurant . We enjoyed the pool near the sports bar more this trip. Great service for getting drinks by the pool? Must try Keneisha,s Sexy K . There were plenty of chairs at the beach and pool each day and was no need to save them in the morning even though some guests did! There did a beach bar that makes delicious drinks. The week we were there, there at least 2 to 3 weddings a day. Several of the weddings had the receptions on the beach in front of where the nightly entertainment was. This created a very noisy environment. It was very difficult to enjoy the entertainment. They should move the receptions to another location. Try the ocean kayaks and paddle boats that the hotel offers. Had a great week with friends.

We stayed at Riu Ocho Rios is 2008, we purchased the Apple 5 star Jamaica deal agiain and this is where we ended up again. We were generally satisfied then and were again this time. The breakfasts are very good all the expected choices. Lunches also were good, the jerk chicken was fine and they had a cook make paninis or wraps while you waited. Dinner though was a little bit of a disapointment. I seemed to remember more choices for dinner then , even a lobster night. The specialty restaurants were inconsistent, one night I had a excellent steak and when we managed to return there later in the week, it was not very good. The reservations for the restaurants were not as difficult to obtain as some have claimed. Rooms were clean and the safes and the door locks worked properly, be careful although you can accidentally trigger deadbolt and not be able to reenter room. Drinks were not watered down and service was very fast. We do tip maids, waiters and bartnders, don't know if that is why we get such good service but I noticed many others do not and I saw noone waiting very long. Snorkeled right of the beach over the grassy areas and did see some fish, used the kayaks and that was fine also. Overall the weather was fantastic, the pools warm, service excellent and the food just a little less than last time.

Had a great time at the ClubHotel Riu. Quick check-in and warm welcome with Kerri Ann, Verona from the Entertainment staff was amazing, and Tasha Marie made breakfast enjoyable. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Make reservations and try the different resturants for dinner. Everyone on staff was friendly and did everything to make our stay enjoyable. Long bus ride from the airport, but if you didn't take the ride you'd miss a great experience at this hotel.

Room Tip: Deluxe wing is quiet but a further distance from resturaunts.
