This was an excellent Hotel in which to have my first all-inclusive holiday in Jamaica. I stayed with my son and mother-in-law for 2 weeks at the Riu, Ocho Rios and it was the best holiday I have been on yet. It came highly recommended by a couple of colleagues and I was not disappointed!
Best bits: the BEACH - clean, turquoise-coloured, shallow sea that my 7 year old son loved exploring with his snorkle and mask; FOOD - the Jerk Hut is highly recommended, overall decent variety to choose from although somewhat repetitive by week 2; CLEANLINESS of resort - excellent, even in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in October, the staff had the grounds, beach and pools cleaned up by the following day! ENTERTAINMENT STAFF - hard working, friendly team with good variety of daytime activities & nightime entertainment with no pressure to join in (although that is the fun part - Brady & Pim need a special mention here, the steel band and Michael Jackson impersonator were all terrific); LOCATION - Dunns River, Mystic Mountain, Dolphin Cove are all 10 minutes away - cheapest to take a local 'taxi' from the main road for US$2 (approx), Ocho Rios craft market for souvenirs and local supermarket for best priced Rum is only 15 minutes away by taxi. Everyone wants you to buy from their stall but if you are polite but firm, there are no problems.
ROOMS were fine: decor slightly dated but spacious and clean. Slight musty smell when first got to room - probably due to air-conditioning - but soon went away. As I didn't go on holiday to stay indoors, I didn't have a problem. Minibar in the room was well stocked at all times; though I missed having tea and coffee-making facilities in the room especially first thing in the morning. The Sports Bar is open 24hrs so you can get around this but its a long walk if your room is at the opposite end of the resort and was my least favourite place in the resort.
CHILDRENS CLUB - there is one there and the team will look after kids upto 4:30pm-ish but at the time I went (Oct/Nov 2012), there were only kids under 5 attending. My 7 year old son soon made friends with kids his age and older so lived by the 'lively' pool as I called it (nearest the gym). For those in search of peace and quiet, there is always the beach and a 'quite' pool at the other end of the resort.
EXCURSIONS - these seemed expensive when bought through the holiday rep. You can get better deals from legitimate companies if you are willing to take the long walk to the front gate and are prepared to haggle.
OVERALL - a great holiday. Friendly staff, plenty to do on the resort, lots to see nearby. I enjoyed the little bit of paradise I saw so much, my bags are packed ready to go back and explore more of the island in May with a group of friends! Yeah mon!!!
TIP: Take a small amount of US$ to start off with for spending money but you will get the best JA$ exchange from local stores/banks when you get over there.
