“GOOD DEAL”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

Hotel staff very helpful and friendly and lots of activities to do during the day. Food was adequate and typical of all inclusive. Best part was meeting up with Leroy Decosta on the beach for the glass bottom boat tour through to Dunns River Falls (private falls guide), Dolphin Cove (2 kids went free) and into town for authentic Jamaican seafood. A quarter of the price going through the tours with the hotel ..Just look for the glass bottom boat on the left of the beach fence line. Well worth it. BRING WATER SHOES ...sea urchins get washed up close to shore and you can get stung (happened 2x to guests when we were there and you need them for Dunns River Falls)

Room Tip: Quieter in the south tower. Bar and entertainment centre is beside the North tower. Ask for renovate...

We was very apprehensive about the hotel after reading the many negative reviews..But it turned out to be a good choice and a memorable holiday. We arrived a day after the hurricane, and our initially impressions was very pleasing, then we had a extremely long wait before checking in. with no explanation from any one why the delays, it was most annoying, especially after 10 hours of travelling. I would like to put this down to the difficulties and chaos caused by the storm and guest having to extended their holidays. We was given a room in the North tower, which was completely unsuitable, in need of updating and very noisy, but managed to get a room change the following morning to the South Tower, which was a lot better in all respects. With regards to the staff team, we came across a couple of staff who we felt we very unhelpful and need to be trained in customer relations, but there are many many more who were good at their jobs, friendly and polite and added to the positive experiences. I read a lot about SONIA this and SONIA that, SONIA.... and was surprised that she actually existed and true to all the comments she was very helpful and extremely good at her job - she always had a pleasant and welcoming smile. A true asset to the hotel. FOOD - it was very pleasing to see so much local food included in the buffet, giving us a taste of caribbean food - I can still taste the lovely Stew peas. We also checked out the three speciality restuarants and our favourite was the fusion of Caribbean and American foods. The hotel has plenty of entertainment during the day and evening, but we enjoyed the evening entertainment most, there was a mixture of singers, comedy and talent shows and even a late night disco. The hotel is centrally located in Ocho and a short distance from Dunns River falls, Mystic mountains and other attractions. We came away from the hotel feeling very pleased with our choice, and WOULD RECOMMENDED IT TO OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WITHOUT HESITATION and one where we would definitely return.

Room Tip: South Tower room a MUST.

Had an absolutely wonderful time when I went in August. The hotel is really nice, the pools are beautiful! The food was pretty good as well. The A La Carte's were very good. We had an issue with the first room we were given because it was on the ground floor and there was an ant nest that got disturbed and ants started flying out of our AC (random but ya...) They were extremely good about it and gave us the upgrade to the top floor. Apart from the issue with ants the room was really nice. The service was really good all around. The beach was alright... I wasn't Wow'ed by it. There was a lot of seaweed and after 5 minutes of being in the water my mom was stung by a jellyfish. Honestly, don't be afraid though, I truly believe we just had bad luck as nobody else had any complaints. The entertainment at night was alright, but I mean really, who expects a lot?
Overall a really enjoyable vacation! We booked for 915 per person and that was money well spent!

Room Tip: Choose a room that is NOT on ground or even second floor, reptiles, bugs and crabs can get in!

I would like to say a special “THANK YOU” to every staff member who worked during the hurricane. I felt that we were well informed about what was happening. We had letters delivered to our rooms informing us about the hurricane, and during the hurricane guests were informed where they could and could not go. Meals were moved to a safer area and message boards informed guests when and where to go for meals. Our rooms had some water leaking into the room, but as soon as we informed the room maids they came to the rooms and started to clean up. I observed staff working throughout the day and night to ensure that guests were comfortable and cannot praise them enough especially the 11th floor cleaning supervisor (north). People have moaned on their reviews about performance during the hurricane, but guests’ safety was put before anything else. So some of you had to wait ages for a room….we were in the middle of a hurricane that has killed numerous amounts of people…you were in the lobby where you were SAFE and had access to food and drinks. What more did you expect. During the hurricane I approached a manager with a query. He was extremely helpful and saw my request through to the end himself even though he was extremely busy…That is excellent customer service, so a big ‘THANK YOU’ to Mr Lingo.

Me and my family of 6 stayed at this hotel from 14.10.12 until 29.10.12. When we arrived, we had to wait for approximately 45 mins to complete checking in, but were offered refreshments whilst we waited. Our room was on the 11th floor of the North Tower (1153, 1149, 1147) and were really nice. The rooms were spacious and clean and there was space to pack out your clothing. The room maids were amazing. Our rooms were cleaned nicely every day and fresh towels replaced daily. All 3 rooms had flat screen TV’s. Anything that we requested from the room maids was always dealt with straight away. I was worried about the reviews relating to the North Tower, but had no complaints about smells, mould etc. The music is a little louder in the North Tower, but this is because the entertainment lobby is on the North side, but you cannot please everybody and it only goes on until about 11pm. It did not really bother me as I was downstairs enjoying it most of the time. If the hotel did not have entertainment, then people would still complain.

The buffet restaurant had plenty of food and the staff were amazing and very attentive. I must be honest and say that I think the food was very bland. We were in Jamaica where the food is supposed to be flavoursome…it does not have to be hot of pepper to be well seasoned. I understand that the hotel has to cater for different people’s taste buds, but if you go to Jamaica, then you should eat what the Jamaican’s eat. I was disappointed that there was no curry mutton on the menu, as this for me, is a traditional dish. I have to say that I was very impressed with the bar staff and their amazing cocktails. The alcohol is PROPER alcohol, not like Egypt where the spirits all taste like turps. I read a previous comment where somebody stated that black guests were given preferential treatment at the hotel lobby bar. I totally disagree with this and was a guest at the hotel at the same time as they were. The guests in the hotel were served on a first come first served basis. At no time did I observe ANYBODY getting special treatment from ANY bar. The jerk chicken hut was great and the chicken tasted really nice.

The grounds of the hotel are amazing and always kept clean and tidy. The pools are also amazing and we had plenty of fun in them. The bar in the pool is a very nice touch. The entertainment team were great, especially Tanesha and Nara Kay. They kept us all entertained and made our time at the hotel even more special. Thanks to Nara Kay for beating the boys with one hand at table tennis, that shut them up!! The DJ was also good and played some nice reggae music around the pool. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to the nurse who gave me some medical treatment. Very nice and attentive lady.

We have been home for 5 days and missing Jamaica already. I will definitely be returning back to SJG in June 2013 and would definitely recommend this hotel to others

Room Tip: North tower higher floor rooms okay. 11th Floor 1147, 1149 and 1153 all nice rooms.

Initially I had a few problems with this hotel in terms of being put in the north tower instead of the cabana that I had paid for. Once switched to the cabana, I had to move to another cabana because the pipes busted in the bathroom ceiling and the next morning water was everywhere!
To say the least, I was inconvenienced for a couple of days, however the staff at Jamaica Grande made up for the inconveniences. The staff is awesome, in particular are three people in the main dining room, Dwayne, Charmaine and Tenelle. They made me feel so welcome and were very accommodating. Also, the young ladies in the Spa, Novelette and Marsha did a fabulous job with my massage and mani/pedi. The food is very good, nice beach and lots of activities. I never had another thought of my inconveniences. I love the people of Jamaica and Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort!

Room Tip: If you like peace and quiet, choose the south side.

Took a mini family vacation. We always stayed at the Montego Bay property(SJBR) and decide to try the sister property (SJG). It was a good deal. Food was always good. We all had a good time, the kids loved, though the smaller kids (5 & 6yrs) could not go on the water slide so that was a major disappointment for them, they wanted to go back to Montego Bay for this reason.

The property is close to alot of major attractions (Dunn's River, Dolplhin Cove, Mistic Mountains etc) so that is a huge plus for us too.

Overall good experience and value for money.

We read a lot of the reviews before we chose to go to the SJG and noticed that there were quite a few negative reviews. But having traveled to other locations it seems like there are always some people that just have to find something to complain about. Anyway here is our opinion:
CHECK IN
We arrived a day after Sandy so the communication systems were affected. As a result, the check in was longer than we are used to. It seemed quite disorganized and confusing. It took well over one hour. Having said that the front desk staff were doing the best they could and were very calm even with some upset people due to the waiting time.

ROOMS
We found the rooms typical of all-inclusives we have stayed at in Mexico and Cuba with one exception. The beds were excellent being really comfortable unlike Mexico and Cuba where they are like rocks. The room was clean and we have no complaints.

FOOD
The buffet did not have as great a selection as we are accustomed to but we thought the food was very good. We received excellent service as well. We want to make special mention of Sonia that works in the buffet. She remembered what we liked to drink at meals and she would set it up for us as soon as she saw us walk in.
The ala cartes are the best we have ever experienced - service and food. Great job!

ENTERTAINMENT
There was usually a singer performing just outside the buffet and he was very good. He sang older songs and was really enjoyable. The entertainment on the main stage was ok and on par with what we have experienced at other resorts.

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
The gym was good. It was open 24 hours/day which was cool. We used it everyday and had no problems except sometimes the AC was not on and it could get very warm; but hey it is Jamaica. We don't have young kids but the facilities seemed to be very good for kids with the slides, programs, kids pool, etc etc. The slides only had one working while we were there.

OVERALL AND OTHER FACTORS
We strongly recommend this resort if you want a resort with great value. Overall the staff are very friendly and accommodating. It is close to some of the major attractions which is nice. You only have a short drive to Dunn's Falls or the Dolphin Cove. Also you can just walk off the resort and be in the town centre for shopping. One of the problems in Jamaica is all of the vendors and beggars who can be quite persistent. Don't be taken in by someone saying they want to help you - they are looking for money no matter how friendly they are. But all you need to do is acknowledge them and say no thank you. We walked for hours around Ocho Rios and never felt unsafe at any time.

DON'T BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS - THIS PLACE IS GREAT.
