“Relaxation at it's finest!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

This was our first trip to a Couples resort and our 3rd time to Jamaica. We arrived at Sans Souci 3 days after Sandy hit for a much needed 10 day vacation. While there was still a lot of work to do around the resort, we were pleasantly surprised at how far they had come with the cleanup and were just excited to be somplace warm together.
There were a few minor things that kept us from rating this resort 5 stars, but let's start with the positives first.

1 br beachfront suite A block - very nice room, kept clean by the staff fixtures were a little dated, but no big deal. Great hot water and water pressure.

Most employees were extremely nice and helpful. Tanisha was our favorite bartender and took great care of us each day.

Food was very good for an AI resort. Cassanova food quality was excellent. Pasta bar and breakfast omlets at Palazina was superb. Don't miss the fish tacos for lunch at the main beach. The Starlight Gala was the best buffet we have ever experienced. Room service was timely, the food was good, but the menu is very limited. We did not make it to Bella Vista for dinner.

Main Beach & Pool were clean and looked very nice although we did not spend time there during our stay. No comparison to the beach in Negril, but there were no vendors bothering you either.

Sunset Beach & Pool: We spent most of our days at Sunset Beach. While the beach is a little on the small side, there was plenty of room for everyone. The first 7 days of our trip, 80% of the people at the resort seemed to be at SSB! The main beach and pool were not crowded at all. Unfortunately, the beach was in pretty bad shape from Sandy, but we can't hold that against CSS as they were there cleaning up every day that we were at the resort. I'm sure it will be back in shape soon. The pool was awesome, and the people at the AN beach were some of the friendliest people we have ever met. This was the first AN experience together for us and after 10 minutes we knew where we would be spending most of our time. All I can say is "Once you go, you'll know". The best part is that it is not clothing optional. Everyone is nude so there is nothing to be afraid of. Do not wait til your last day to experience a beach the natural way. You will not have any regrets.

The resort propery overall was beautiful. Again, Sandy did wreak a little havoc, but everything was very well maintained and the landscaping was beautiful.

Mini bar selection very limited without paying extra.

Room service menu limited.

Service at Casanova with a late reservation (8:30) was very slow as it seemed that the staff was more interested in getting their closing chores done than serving the guests. After the first time, we thought this might be a fluke, but we experienced the same thing 2 other nights. Earlier reservations were no problem, service was prompt and friendly.

The smell!! - This may have been due to Sandy, but each night at about the same time, the smell of septic/sewer would permiate the air around A block and invade our room. This made some of our evenings not so enjoyable. We wrote this off to drain field problems due to Sandy as we have not seen any other reviews that mentioned it.

Too many employees "hanging around" at Sunset Beach. We understand that there were a lot of people needed to clean up after the hurricane, but at times it could be uncomfortable with the number of employees that were at the bar or just standing around.

Sandals glass bottom boat. Are you kidding me???? Each day, sometimes multiple times, a boat from Sandals Resorts would cruise past the nude beach and even stop for a short period. This did not really bother me, but my spouse and other people on the beach were made uncomfortable by it. We are Sandal's Select members, and have been to several of their resorts, but due to this immature behavior and lack of respect for their neighbors, we will probably never return to a Sandals resort again. Some of us did have fun waving to them and walking right out to the boat to give them a piece of our mind.

That's about it. We did not partake in any excursions, the spa or watersports, but many people did and it looked like fun.

We will definitely consider returning to Couples Sans Souci. It's a great resort with great people! We had a wonderful, carefree stay.

Room Tip: Beachfront for level access - Ocean view has many steps to the beach. All locations have a great vi...

This was our second stay with Couples (the first was at Couples Negril) and it did not disappoint. In fact, our experience was so wonderful that we would never even consider coming to Jamaica and not staying with Couples. A few highlights:

Service: The guest experience was very smooth. Being whisked into the comfort of the Couples lounge at the airport was so refreshing and stress-free. And we were provided with a private, free taxi to the hotel. Top notch. Check-in was a breeze. The staff here are so thoughtful, helpful and genuine. Two examples: One night we were at the bar and asked for a drink we’d had the night before. The bartender didn’t know what had been in it, so Alecia from Guest Services called the previous day’s bartender and not only found out what was in the drink, but also invited him down to tell us about it personally. Just incredible. Second, the cappuccino machine was broken in the restaurant at dinner but our server, Keishen, took it upon himself to make us two from scratch, despite being busy with his regular duties.

Food: AMAZING. You will be so glad that there are stairs everywhere because you will need them to walk off all the delicious food you eat. The pumpkin soup was the best I’ve ever had, as was the lobster tail. The only downside is that there are only two a la carte restaurants (our favourite was by far The Casanova).

Excursions: Dunn’s River Falls (included in the resort perks) is a can’t-miss. One of the coolest things we have ever done. Water shoes are a MUST for this excursion (sandals won’t cut it; you will get rocks in them). We also paid to go to Dolphin Cove, which aside from the terrible check-in/reception system was a lot of fun. For $95 I got to swim with a dolphin, sting-rays, hold lovebirds, an iguana, African Gray bird, etc. Pretty cool. Beware that food costs extra here and is NOT worth it. Head back to the hotel for real food. Glass bottom boat ride is neat (free), and my husband went wakeboarding every chance he got (also free). The latter is a fantastic perk that you normally pay a fortune for at other hotels.

Rooms: We found the layout and amenities differed from room to room, but every room looked great. We really liked the location of ours (D Block) because it was perfectly situated; close walk to beach, lobby and performance areas, but also quite secluded and private.

Grounds: The beach is a lot nicer at Couples Negril, but we loved the lush layout at San Souci with all the hidden stairwells, romantic views and little extras, such as the mineral pool. As previous reviewers have pointed out, they could certainly stand to give the resort a facelift, as it looks rough around the edges in places. That said, it is immaculate and quaint. Be sure to check out the view of the chessboard and ocean from the tower above the spa! Also, we loved feeding the blind duck (hand-fed!) and turtles that are in the pond near the Au Naturel beach path. The tree overlooking that pond looks like it belongs in a Tim Burton movie. Loved it!

Overall: Absolutely perfect stay. We can’t wait to come back! (I should also note that they spoil the heck out of repeat guests, so loyalty has its privileges). Thank you to everyone who made our stay so special. They even gave us a free anniversary Photoshoot, with no obligation to purchase images. Where else can you get that??? Incredible.

Room Tip: We enjoyed D-Block. Great location.

We arrived just after hurricane sandy, whilst the staff did a great job in making the resort safe. There were some major areas they left.
This was our second visit to couples, we stayed at swept away last year? Sadly this resort is not up to swept away standards, with the staff having a too casual approach to everything. There is nothing wrong with being layed back, but for us the paying guests, not the staff.

The restaurants, food standard is poor, repetitive lunch menus, and to many buffett. Don't go expecting the food you see on the website, A L Carte only available from Casanovas, and that only open 4 days a week.

Mini bar is a joke, you have to wait for it to be delivered and most times it's wrong.

No drinks menus available, you have to guess your drinks and cocktails, and they have cut back on the high brand labels, mainly local drinks.

There are some positives, the rooms were cleaned well, and the evening entertainment near the piano bar is very good.

I've stopped is some 4 & 5 star resorts before. Couplese swept away, 5 stars, couples Sans Souci I would only give 3 stars.

We arrived a few days after Sandy. They did an outstanding job of cleaning up the grounds and making everything usable. We spent a lot of time at the AuNatural Beach. It was our second trip to the resort. I sorta felt like a second class guest this time at the AuNatural Beach. We had to use Porta Johns for the entire 7 days. One day it was so muddy, housekeeping said she couldn't clean until they did something about it. They brought in a few boards and some sand to reduce the mud hole. We were satisfied with the bar and the food. However, there were many times we couldn't sit at the bar because there were so many lifequards and other employees of the resort occupying the seats. One time I counted over 7 employees "hanging around" guests or just hanging around. On another time I had to wait for the chef working the food bar to serve employees before attending to my needs. They were also lax in enforcing the "no clothing" rule. Before booking our next trip we will ask if these issues have been resolved. If not, we will probably not go back.

Room Tip: We generally stay in Block A or B because it is flat and close to both beaches. Many of our friend...

We spent eight days at Couples San Souci (CSS). This was our 16th all-inclusive (AI) Jamaica vacation with previous visits divided among Couples Tower Isle, Sandals and SuperClubs. Nobody does AI better than Jamaica. Our comments are based on comparison with other Jamaica AI resorts since we have some very good choices. Our comments also reflect appreciation for the job the CSS team did cleaning up after Sandy. We arrived five days after the storm and things were in generally good shape.

The unique thing about Couples is the couples only format which does make a difference compared to other resorts even different from other adult only resorts. There are no business meetings, no extended family groups, no singles. Even though there are features at other resorts that are better this format difference is worth bring CSS to the front when considering where to stay.

We had a room in Block A which is beachfront. All room settings are good at CSS and room choice largely comes down to preference about beach level versus view-focused hillside. Our room was spacious and well-appointed. The large whirlpool tub was very nice and actually worked. Room housekeeping was excellent. On the positive, CSS offers room service which some don't. Our room service breakfast orders were all exact and on time. On the negative, small item, but the mini-fridge has no Red stripe unless you pay extra...This is Jamaica, mon, come on! The resort grounds are larger than most resorts of this size--I believe about 150 rooms on 35 acres. This provides an open feeling amidst very beautiful grounds. This is a plus. The place is peaceful. No booming noise from neighboring resorts.

Our judgment of beach quality is somewhat tempered by residual Sandy impact. The main beach was clean and is in a very nice setting. It is not the same quality as Negril and has more of a fine sand, almost muddy character compared to the grainy sand of Negril. This could have been residual storm impact. However, the beach is much more private and secluded than most. The main beach is bounded on both sides by rock outcrops that eliminate any walk on traffic. The AN beach, or Sunset Beach, is secluded from the main beach but has some exposure to local fisherman and boat traffic from a river on the property edge. When we were there this beach was not swimmable due to debris and flow from the river. Sunset beach itself is nice and includes adequate sun shades to make it pleasant. Unique at Couples also is that the AN beach and pool area is mandatory AN--not CO. This is a positive differentiator. One mediocre point about the pool area is that the hot tub is relatively small and above ground like a back yard hot tub. It does not provide the social potential that we have experienced at other places.

The bar setup at the AN pool and main pool are good and well serviced. The food service at Sunset Beach is not up to what we have seen at other resorts. In case you are a lamb chop fan, this beach bar is not the place to get them. Food service at the main pool area restaurant, Buena Vista was mixed. The food was limited in selection but what was there was very good. The big problem we experienced was poor service. On several occasions we were mid-meal and a server would be standing within twenty feet and not make a move to fill an empty wine glass. We also had an abnormally amount of wrong orders. We honestly were mystified by a paradox in apparent willingness to serve but lack of follow through. All through the resort staff will greet you and ask how you are...this is great and they have that culture embedded. The problem we saw was follow through on things like coffee service at breakfast or water/wine or other drinks at lunch. This service was not up to what we have experienced at this level of resort elsewhere on the island.

The evening events, especially the Friday gala, standout as among the best we have seen anywhere. Food is fantastic and abundant. Entertainment is better than many of the standard shows at resorts around the island.

All things considered CSS is an excellent resort with its format being the main differentiator. No resort we have found on the island has everything. Good luck making your choice. If you temper your expectations a bit and let yourself be surprised by what is uniquely Couples, you will have a great time.

Room Tip: If you like AN beaches, choose Block A. If you cannot climb stairs to a great extent, select beach...

Arrived at Sans Souce a few days after Sandy struck. Although there were lots of trees down, efforts were well under way to clean up. Service , rooms, food were all first rate. Tennis was fun, beach was clean and pools were in good shape. This was our second trip to Sans Souci and we are booked for the same time next year.
