“A truly romantic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

Couples San Souci was a different kind of trip for us. We have always chosen much newer, upscale resorts... jokingly they could be called marble palaces. The ones with the huge, posh lobby etc. As many have eluded, Couples San Souci is not that type of resort. Yes it is older, yes the rooms could use an update, but the place has an atmosphere. This is really tough to describe in a review but it is what made this trip incredible. We knew in advance that this resort would be different but wanted to see if it would deliver the romance factor. It did and therefore earned the excellent review.

The grounds and views were absolutely breathtaking and we saw staff continuously performing upkeep to maintain the lush surroundings. Exploring all the hidden spots of the resort was a lot of fun. We liked that we could explore and often have gorgeous areas, hot tubs, etc all to ourselves. We booked a 1 bedroom ocean suite. We specifically wanted a room up in the cliffs. Many prefer the beachfront rooms and not having to navigate the stairs. For us, it was our location in the cliff area that made our trip so romantic and memorable. I feel fairly certain that had we booked the beachfront, I may not have liked the resort that well. I didn't get the same ambiance down there but everyone has different preferences.

Our room was F8 and the location and views were excellent. F8 is above the photo shop and had a great oceanview as well as a view of casanova and the evening entertainment. It also has a large balcony with a double lounger and table with chairs. The room was dated but we felt that the staff did a great job of keeping everything spotless - probably one of the best cleaning staff experiences at an all inclusive in our experience. We loved sitting out on our balcony listening to the evening entertainment. Some may actually find that a problem due to noise but for us, it was awesome and we absolutely loved it! The music is over prior to or at 11pm.

We ate at each of the restaurants and thought that all of them are were very good for both quality and service. Casanova was our favorite. We loved the escargot and also liked the wine choice to have sauvignon blanc rather than chardonnay. We also really liked the jerk chicken at lunch at the beach grill. The sauce was great and better jerk than we have had at some other resorts.

We were there for the new years party and thought couples went all out. The walk from our room to the managers cocktail party was gorgeous with candles lining the walkways. The cocktail party was well done and very fun. Then it was on to the main event. The gala was set very nice and we really enjoyed it. The first and the last entertainer were fantastic and we loved ringing in the new year in Jamaica. I did notice at both events during the week that some couples were able to reserve tables in advance with signage and take the prime seating. At the beach party, we were running about 15 minutes late and had a hard time finding a seat that wasn't marked reserved or that another guest wasn't saving. However, an employee saw us wandering and promptly offered to find us a great spot. Very nice!

We have always felt like the Jamaicans are very kind, friendly, fun people. The employees at couples sans souci are certainly that way and we were treated extremely well during our stay. Guest services hunted down my lost luggage and got pretty aggressive with the airline. We really appreciated this. Also, everyday we had to go by the bell desk to get to and from our room. Earl was always there with a smile and a hello. Kenesha in the photo shop made sure we had some great pictures to take home and she was very enjoyable to talk with.

We had an amazing stay and although we have never gone to the same resort twice, we have decided that we will revisit this resort. Whether you love it or hate it is in the ambiance and the romance. If you feel it, you will be hooked.

1st time to this resort & we loved it. We had a beach front room & it was right in front of the swim up pool, so you could just walk out the door to the pool or beach. Richard at the pool & beach was always working to keep the chairs clean & beach area raked up, & always willing to help you in any way! What a doll! Also Dave the bartender at the swimup bar &other bars was great! He went out of his way to serve us! Thanks to him! We loved this resort because it was on a smaller scale. More laid back. There is alot of stairs to go up to the lobby & other resturants, but that did not bother us, we needed that after all the great food we had all week! We were there for New Years & wow what a party they put on! The food was out of this world! Yes the resort is a little dated & could use some repairs, but overall we loved it & would go back. The staff was great & we had no complaints.

Room Tip: We had room A-7 Beach front in the Azaela building. Any rooms in that building I think would be O.K...

Fabulous vacation ... we returned to Sans Souci in December. Have you ever been disappointed in your room but encountered "reluctance" from the staff to move you ... well not here. We have a corner veranda room we love and within 2 days we were moved without hesitation. The staff are amazing and we were so pleased to see trainees from previous visit now staff. The food and presentation are excellent, and the quiet intimate spaces are a delight for us. We spent a day at the other Couples in Ocho Rios ... Tower Isle ... and the views, renovations and beach are fabulous ... but we think the food remains better at Sans Souci. We will be back!

Room Tip: Corner rooms with veranda are fab.

We spent New years week at this resort in a Beachfront room and liked it but couldn't say we loved it. First let me say as a Travel Agent I do get to experience a wide variety of properties. This one was a little disappointing with regards to the rooms which as previous reviewers have told you are very shabby. Two drawers for clothes but big room so that makes no sense that they wouldn't add more storage space. Service was hit and miss. Some meals took up to 3 hours while others were served promptly. Lunch at the beach grill was very slow. Having been to all of the Sandals & Beaches resorts through out the Caribbean, I was expecting more from Couples who are supposed to be their competion.
I have to give the resort full credit however for the fabulous New Years Eve Party they threw. It was one of the best we have been to in the Caribbean and we go south every year at this time. The activities staff were also amazing. Katy Ann & Shelly Ann great job.
This is a 4 star small resort so if that is what you expect when you go then you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: if you are a fitness buff this is the resort for you. there are 128 stairs to climb to your room fr...

We have been to all 4 Couples resorts with CSS being the first in 2006. We are Couples fans and have always promoted the resorts to anyone who would listen.
We decided to return to CSS and were there from 12/16-12/23. We booked a one-bedroom ocean suite but were up-graded to a Penthouse in Bldg. E. We loved the room, view and building location. However, from there on things were not as perfect as we remembered from our previous trip. To be fair, some of the issues were not the fault of Couples; water main break in town, very windy weather which closed down all water sports, etc. but many were service related which surprised and disappointed us.
We will probably not return to CSS but are thinking about a return trip to CN.

Room Tip: If stairs are not an issue request a top floor room if possible in Bldg E,F,or G for the best views.

We have been to Jamaica 4 other times. We had very high hopes in regards to this stay. We had seen other reviews about this resort and were very excited about our stay. Arrival at the airport and being escorted into their waiting room was very nice and very painless. Drinks were provided as were restroom facilities. We only had to wait not even a 1/2 hour. The drive to the resort was very nice since they have finally finished with the road work.

Upon arrival at the property we were greeted with the customary glass of champagne and checked in. At the same time we booked our restaurant reservations. A gentleman took us to our room in a little taxi like vehicle because we would have had to walk a bit of a distance with our luggage. We had to wait a bit more then we would have liked, but they did finally come and showed us our room which was right on the beach overlooking a small yard.

Upon first entering the room you are greeted with a mini-fridge, mini-bar and coffee maker, etc... I immediately noticed that the furniture was nicked and had pot marks in it. The door to the cabinet that housed the mini bar did not even close all the way. Further inspection of the room was nice, but showed some shabby furniture that really needs to be replaced about 5 years ago. The bed was VERY comfortable though and they get 5 stars on that respect. The bathroom was nice and the shower and jetted tub are separate. We never used the jetted tub.

Later on in the week though the bathroom seemed to be over run with these little ants all over the place. There were little ants all over the counter tops and in the floor. Also in the shower you could see mildew in the shower grout. We unloaded and relaxed for a minute, took in the view and off we went on our grand adventure.

The beach is quite nice, but small and we are okay with that. just be reminded that this report's beach is located in a cove and the water is MUCH COLDER then out in the actual ocean. If you want warm water in the ocean you are better to stay at a resort that is directly on the ocean and not located off in a cove area. This resort is MUCH more laid back then any of the others we have stayed at and for that we give this resort 5 stars for its laid back, small atmosphere.

Later in the evening we visited the Bella Vista Restaurant as it was our 1st night and we had no reservations anywhere. Service at this restaurant was HORRIBLE!!! We were seated by the nice lady, but it took them OVER 10 minutes to even come to take our order. We had to finally get up and ask someone if they could come take our order. I understand island time, but this is unacceptable in customer service. The food was so/so and we decided to NOT go back to Bella Vista during our stay.

We did go to the au-natural beach the entire time we were there. It was much more quite and not nearly as many people as the other beach. BUT be warned the au-natural beach is not as private as the regular beach. Yes it is private from the property, but NOT from the people on the public beach just about 80 yards away or the people that go up and down the river that empties out right next to the au-natural beach. We ended up hanging out at the swimming pool the entire time. I even saw people in a boat come by with a camera and the security did nothing about it. Be warned this resort has a TON of steps.

Depending on where your room is you may to hike a bit to get to the nice restaurant and even the lobby. But if you are in to nooks, crannies and hidden places this resort is for you. We found so many little places that made me think of pirates and treasure. Very unique in that sense. Internet connection is free, but is VERY spotty at best. You eat at the same restaurant for breakfast every day unless you do room service.

We stayed during the new year parties and what they tried to pass off as entertainment was absurd. It was embarrasing for me to watch these kids pass off something they called Latin Dancing. It was far from it and I could shake my hips better then that. They had this girl that was supposed to do acrobatics in sheets (I don't know the technical term for it). Bless her, but it was terrible! She did one pose and NEVER did any acrobatics in the sheets. The entertainment for their New Year party was horribly lacking and I wonder if even their entertainment director had screened these people before they booked them. On the way back to the aiport the entire bus was talking about how horrible and embarassing to watch the new year's "entertainment".

Overall we had a good time, but we were VERY dissapointed in this resort and we cannot understand how this resort has 5 stars and all the praise it gets. We will not be coming back to this resort and we cannot in our right mind recommend it to anyone. The only way we would come back is if they made some major upgrades to their rooms and service improved. And they got rid of the ants in the room.

Room Tip: We stayed in B building (B19) and it is right on the beach. Get a third floor room and you will hav...

We booked this holiday as a special treat for our silver wedding and although overall we had a great holiday I would not rush back to this hotel. The journey time from the airport is almost two hours and we had THE WORST driver on the planet, we did complain when we arrived at the hotel and our return journey was much safer. Our first room was disappointing based on what we paid and how it was described in the brouchure however the staff did move us to a better room with stunning view of the sea. We have stayed at Rui Palace in Mexico and in comparison the decor and attention to detail at Couples falls short. The staff are very friendly and laid back, spa was absolutely brilliant and this was a very chilled out and relaxing holiday.
