The hotel has all the makings of a four star all-inculsive, but a few key things need someone's attention.
Pros: the property is nice and well kept, the beach is pleasant, the staff is friendly and caring, the rooms are good sized, proximity to ocho rios and dunn's falls is a plus, breakfast is good, the entertainment staff is very energetic and goes out of their way to include people in activities, the jerk shack serves delicious pork and chicken, the bar tenders are efficient and generous.
Cons: the asian restaurant should be closed asap as it serves the worse rice i and the other 7 people sitting at the tepanyaki grill have ever tasted and the "chef" had a routine that was more fit for spring break, we paid for concierge/room service and waited 45 mins for delivery before giving up and getting our own breakfast, dinner on the pier was so meager that my wife and i and another couple at our table went to another restaurant for dinner after eating there.

Stayed here week of Oct 7, 2012 and had a perfect vacation.
Short version of my review (i.e., all you need to know):
- food was out of this world delicious
- service couldn't have been better
- grounds are beautiful and well maintained
- room was spacious and comfortable

Now as for more details (i.e. I couldn't resist sharing)
- food was absolutely amazing everywhere we ate: the buffet has good variety, especially with a number of local dishes offered daily, and really really high quality food, inc. desserts (bread pudding in particular!); Japanese is great & very entertaining; pizza restaurant has amazing dough; 6-course dinner under the stars was to die for -- it was like going to a fancy wedding!
- the beach is small, but there was always enough space for us and plenty of loungers available; you just can't go for very long strolls down the beach because it's private so it ends
- for the nature-lovers and gardeners in particular, a nature walk with Leabert is not to be missed: the grounds have a wide variety of vegetation and he gives a really informative tour
- our room faced the RIU resort, which had a very annoying record of bird sounds playing about 16 hrs/day, very loudly; I'm sure it's hard for Jewel to control what the RIU does, but this was the one bothersome thing during our stay

Caveat: as much as I loved my vacation and would certainly return, I do have to say this resort may not be for everyone.
- It is very romantic and fairly quiet: if you're looking for a wild party, this is not the place.
- If you're going to the Caribbean to eat a lot of seafood/shellfish, you might be disappointed. They have a wide selection of food, and there is always some fish available, but shellfish (lobster, shrimp, oysters, etc.) is minimal. But again, the food they do offer is amazing!

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review and delighted that you had a fantastic stay with us, and enjoyed all that the resort had to offer. I thank you for your understanding with regards to the RIU next door, which we have no control of. I am happy that the food was to your expectation and fully appreciate the feedback with regards to variety. This is something that we will use to enhance our product. Thanks again and see you soon.

This trip was my group's 7th annual trip to Jamaica. We stayed at Jewel Dunn's River Falls from October 21 - 26, 2012 and although Hurricane Sandy tried to wreck the vacation, she could not! The property was intimate unlike the many large Spanish style hotels on the island. All amenities were within easy walking distance, the rooms were large with the exception of the bathroom which were extremely small but was very clean. The staff was very friendly, helpful and courteous, especially Peggy (restaurant), Clarence (chef), Ms. Davis (front desk) and all the entertainment staff (Marlon, Stacia {hope I'm spelling her name correct}, Cat, etc). The choices of Jamaican cuisine each day was adequate but could have been better, one must have is the "Jerk chicken or jerk pork wraps". The beach was great! Due to hurricane Sandy, we had to stay indoors for two full day however the time went by extremely fast due to the interaction of the entertainment staff. Overall the trip was Amazing and I would definitely recommend this hotel!

We had read so many great review about this hotel and were definitely disappointed. I should mention that we were there when hurricane Sandy hit and I do have to give the hotel credit for keeping it's guests safe and providing food and drink but that's where the good review ends.

There was just nothing impressive about this hotel. The rooms were nice but nothing spectacular. The services was poor. Due to the hurricane we had to switch rooms because our room flooded (no big deal) but the new room was a down-graded room (again, no big deal) but we didn't even receive a full set of towels in this room. We had to call housekeeping 3 times to get towels delivered.

The staff was friendly but not very informative. Every time we asked a question at the front desk they told us we had to ask someone else. We had to ask 3 different people about which restaurants were open. This leads me to the food which was ok but not great and not all the restaurants were open every day which was frustrating.

We were probably most disappointed with their activities desk. After the hurricane went through we arranged to go on an excursion that we arranged through the activities desk. We showed up in the lobby at the time we were supposed to board the bus but when no bus came we went to the activities desk and found out that the tour had been cancelled. The tour wasn't to begin until 12pm and we had spent most of the morning in our room and no one even tried to call us to tell us that it was cancelled. Then when we asked if there was something else we could do, the staff person told us that nothing else was available. We later found out that several other excursions were available and we could have done them if we had known earlier that our excursion was cancelled or if the activities staff person cared about finding us something else.

We will definitely not go back to a Jewel resort.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review, and I am happy that we took care of your safety during the passage of Hurricane Sandy. Let me apologise if we downgraded your room, for your safety, based on the circumstance. We would never deliberately downgrade any guest, but again based on the circumstance we made sure all our guest were safe as safety is a priority for us here at The Jewel Dunns River.

I also want to extend my apologies if the Tour desk, did not rely in a timely manner, re the cancellations of tours, they do not work directly with the tour companies, and as such, based on the passage of Hurricane Sandy, their were difficulties at times with getting through to companies and even airlines to pass on information. Again my apologies, if we did not let your vacation seems as memorable as you would have wanted it to be and fully understand.

If we had control of the weather, I gurantee you that we would not have asked for the Hurricane to visit us here in Jamaica and espeially at The Jewel Dunns River Beach Resort & Spa.
