“Awesome...Awesome...Awesome...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2011

We stayed at the Jewel from June 21-25, 2011. Absolutely loved it. First, the bus ride isn't that bad. It gives you a chance to see the coast line and see some of the towns heading to Ocho Rios. When you get off the bus, you're greeted by a friendly, smiling staff member with an ice cold towel to cool you off, and followed by the drink of the day. What a great way to start. Check in goes very quick, and you head to your room with a bellman in tow with your luggage.
The room was beautiful. We had a one bedroom butler suite overlooking the ocean and the pool. Fantastic view from both balconies. It was very clean and spacious. Housekeeping did a fabulous job each and every day, ensuring that everything was crisp and clean, even going as far as folding and stacking any clothing we accidentally left out. And turndown service left us cute little towel visitors each night.
Room service was great. The food was delicious and the server even set the table for us complete with a tablecloth. Liquor dispenser and mini bar in the room was convenient too, although the drinks from any of the bars were great too.
The Butlers were very attentive also. Kudos to Keoni and Oren. They even had a couple of lounge chairs reserved for us at poolside in the morning and checked in on us to see if we needed dinner reservations, or anything in general.
The restaurants are also top notch. The cafe for breakfast and lunch was great and Shawn was very personable each morning. The view from the cafe is also fantastic. Moonstone was also very nice. Great service from Rachelle. And the Jade Samurai was excellent also, with Blackie Chang showing us an awesome Tepanyaki experience. Conrad (AKA Eddie) at the pool bar was very attentive and funny every day. Made the pool experience worth while.
The Hotel Manager Scott Robbins sets the example of what a manager should be. I can't say enough good things about him. He does an awesome job to communicate with the guests and goes out of his way to check in on them and make sure they are enjoying their stay. We felt welcomed and at home from the first minute to the last. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay and impressed with the property and the service.
The daily activities in and around the pool are a lot of fun with Jason on the mic, and the evening activities leave a lasting impression.
I would definitely recommend the Jewel as a great place to stay. Much more personable and friendly that the Riu next door. We attended a wedding there one night and it seemed like no one took the time to greet you or offer to help. We literally had to chase a lady down to ask where to go. We walked around for almost and hour, attended the wedding, and then walked out and we were not greeted by a single employee the whole time. It was nowhere near the attentiveness of the staff at the Jewel. Everyone smiles and greets you there.

The entire staff bent over backwards to ensure that our vacation went perfectly. Once they learn your names, they will greet you by name regularly. If you are subdued and want quiet, they seem to be aware of that and leave those people to themselves. We highly recommend this resort, especially if you are of the outgoing/partying type, but it did work for the others too. The onlr reason we didn't give the restaurants the highest rating was we've had better food. But it was still very good and for the price the food , service, variety, and overall satisfaction, we were very pleased. You can also play beach volleyball daily, pool games and activities were ok. The sailboats were awesome, included in the deal, after a 15 min lesson, if you handle the boat with the instructor onboard, you can use them in 30 min increments for the rest of your trip, very cool. The evening entertainment was also very enjoyable. Our favorite was the steel drum band on Sun. evening. If your trip includes Sunday evening it's a must see. All the other shows/beach parties and dinners were very good as well. Have Fun, we sure did!!!

My wife and I stayed at the Jewel May 23-30 for our Honeymoon. We arrived late because of some complications in Atlanta. Once we got there there was a gentlemen waiting for us at the entrance who took care of everything for check-in, he also gave us drinks as we waited. So with that said the service here is excellent. They really do try to pay attention to their guest to offer a wonderful time! We loved the food and it always filled us up. I went down their thinking they would have American beer, I was wrong. It's only Red Stripe and Red Stripe light, but it is honestly great beer, It is the King of beers for Jamaica just like Bud is here. I never had it but loved it. The bartenders are excellent!!! mostly Conrad, He is a true Jamaican with his lively spirit, you will find him quickly as he loves to talk loud saying "I'm READY!!!" Try a Dirty Banana too, its like a milkshake with rum... mmmm YUM!!! The beach is nice it is very quaint but not too small. It was my first time to Jamaica and I had a blast. Keep in mind it rained everyday for about 4 hours on average and I can still say I had a blast. That says a lot about a resort. The room was very well kept up as the service everywhere is excellent. Watch for when moonstream sets up tables out side right beside the beach with the sounds of the Caribbean within feet. This was the best romantic dinner we had there. If you have read this far then choose this resort and go have fun. It is very reasonably priced and you receive 5star service!!!

Room Tip: mountain view, very beautiful,&more private

All the reviews explain everything so well it is hard to come up with something new! Reality check: This resort makes everyone feel like a King or Queen during their visit. One review mentioned, "If you don't see, it just ask." So true! I asked for a drink the first day we were there and they didn't stock a certain ingredient needed for my request, but the bartender said, "We will have it tomorrow" OMG! The next day I noticed EVERY bar I visited had what I requested the night before! WOW!

The staff is WONDERFUL! Conrad and Chadwick at the main pool are great. When Conrad is not at the pool bar the energy dies a little unfortunately. The other pool bartenders are not nearly as talented; this statement is more a testament to Conrad than a slight on the other staffers. The Entertainment staff is another WOW factor. I think they are always on the job. Seriously, they were there all the time! When do they ever go home? Sasha and Starr were my favorites. They were able to work on-the-fly and be funny, yet stay professional.

The other guests are open and friendly. We made great friends during our trip and we are not normally "social butterflies." Something at the resort brought happiness out in everyone (and it wasn't just the alcohol consumption!) Someone mention the word "homey" and think this is the best way to describe it!

Scott, the manager, is a godsend to this place! I truly believe he sets the tone for the Jewel. He is always willing to chat and really listens. He wants to know the what his guests are experiencing at the resort and will make adjustments (good or bad) from your feedback. I would LOVE to have a boss like him!!!!!!!!!!!! I must send a HUGE THANK YOU to Scott for everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For future guests:

1. The rooms appear a bit smaller than most rooms you find in the US. It surprised us a little, but overall is it is fine! They are clean and that is MUCH more important! Besides, we were in the room to sleep and shower. The room size is more than ample.
2. Keep in mind they are still updating the resort. There are some things that are not perfect yet, but you will see that they are working on it every day. So, if you are looking for the perfection of the Ritz, go to the Ritz!!! Maybe there, you can pay someone to reserve the perfect chair by the pool for you. Please don't annoy the rest of the guests with your complaints about things that are trivial in the grand scheme of things. If you decide to come to the Jewel and have a concern, tell Scott and he WILL help you... his goal is to ensure that all of his guests are happy.
3. Get involved and you will have more fun (and sometimes they give out prizes!) Again, we are introverts by nature, but we pushed ourselves to get involved and we were very happy that we did! (We won a bottle of rum and a spa treatment!) One couple won extra days at the resort to use whenever and another couple received a room upgrade!
4. I am still seeing comments about the night life on here. Again, look back at number three... Get involved!!!
5. In the early morning 5-6am and late at night, be aware when you are walking around the beach area. There was nothing "bad" but be alert. I went out alone in the early morning to take photos and was "cat called" by someone at the pier and another couple sitting on the deck near the beach was approached even as security was asking him to move along. I mentioned something to the couple after he left and they said, "That’s Jamaica." They have been to Jamaica multiple times and simply said the same thing, "be aware and all will be good mon!"
6. When you arrive at the airport in Montego Bay be prepared for a long wait at immigration and be prepared for a long wait for the JTL bus to leave the airport and be prepared for a long drive to the resort. BUT also be prepared that IT MAY NOT HAPPEN! Our plane arrived at the gate in Jamaica at 2:00pm and we were at the resort with drink in hand by 5pm. That was getting off the plane, processed through immigration, collected our bags, processed through customs, onto the JTL bus,(the bus makes a 10 minute stop for a restroom break), other travelers dropped at other resorts, and lastly arrival at the Jewel. By the way we saw people get off at 3 other resorts and the Jewel was the only one that welcomed guests as they got off the bus, helped with the bags, offered a cold towel to refresh oneself and a drink!!! By the way, if it is your first time to Jamaica, don’t let what you see at the other resorts taint your expectations. The Jewel sparkles far more brilliantly than any of the other resorts we saw during the shuttle ride.
7. Food. I hate to use the term “Foodie” so I will say that my husband enjoys being creative when he cooks. We enjoy being gastronomically adventurous. There is food for everyone here. If plain and simple is your cup of tea, they have it. If you want to try local favorites, those are available too. If the thought of mixing hot peppers with chocolate intrigues or even excites you, this resort will not disappoint.
8. Snorkeling is close and a fun event. Taking a boat out will net you the best results. The reef has seen better days but there are lots if interesting fish to watch. The fish will come very close to you as they are accustomed to being fed by the snorkelers. I saw a Lionfish; others said they saw small stingrays, rock fish, flounder and many other colorful varieties. However, if you are an experienced snorkeler, Jamaica may not rank as one of the better snorkeling destinations.
Here’s the bottom line folks. Unless you are never really satisfied with anything and look down your nose at everyone (Read that as a “Pain In The Butt”), you will enjoy your stay at The Jewel!

I guess I had more say that I first thought...

We were seeking an all-inclusive resort for a very relaxing vacation and got what we were looking for. This resort is small, quiet and very laid back. But after staying here for a week, I'd say the resort is just average. There wasn't anything terrible, but there wasn't anything to lead me to believe it should be rated 5 stars on tripadvisor. Maybe all the rave reviews I read beforehand gave me high expectatations.

I'll start off with the highlights: The grounds and rooms were very well maintained and clean. The nature walk is a must do. Leabert, the gardener, was by far the best employee we encountered and he was very knowledgeable about the plants and eager to answer questions. He sang well too at the talent show. Nightly entertainment was good most nights. We loved the Silver Birds steel drum band, the beach party and the talent show. The free wi-fi in the lobby was a big bonus. The food was hit and miss. The omelets from the breakfast buffet were great. The pizza was good when they got our order correct. The jerk chicken from the grill was fantastic. Platinum had the best jerk chicken spring rolls. Jade was entertaining but the wait in the hot lobby for dessert was horrible. Two of the guests we ate with left early due to the wait and heat.

This leads me to some issues we had.

The majority of the staff wasn't the friendliest unless you were tipping which is included in the all-inclusive. We did tip those that were courteous and gave great service. Two out five days, the towel hut was out of towels midday and the attendent was rude when we asked when there would be more. Even though the food was generally good, there was limited selection and we were eating the same things after 3 days. I struggled to find anything to eat at the lunch buffet. Service was slow at the restaurants, but since we were on vacation and didn't have anything else to do, we didn't mind. During our visit to Moonstone, there was only one woman waiting on the whole restaurant so service took a long time. Most of the time, our water glasses sat empty after the initial fill. I wish there had been drink menus at the bars. Half the time we didn't know what we were drinking, but the gem of the days were great. Some may say weak, but I thought they were perfect. I also wish the daily newsletter was a little better. I had no idea there was food served at the beach party and when activities were cancelled due to weather we weren't sure what would be done instead. Also a map of the resort in the room, would be nice. The orientation didn't cover all areas of the resort.

Overall, we had a good vacation but it could have been better.
