“Amazing Trip!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

I don't know why so many people have negative things to say about this resort! My fiancé and I went here back in July and I forgot to leave a comment about it then. We stayed on the Manor side of the resort (also known as the Ochi Beach Club or the Butler Side). The butler service is a little overrated, but it was nice to have someone do things for you if you wanted. It came with the our room which was one of the cheaper rooms, so its not like we splurged to get the butler, it came with it. Our butler Olmando was amazing! He helped me plan my proposal for my girlfriend during a candlelight dinner. He made my proposal memorable and he was more than happy to do this for us! Then as a surprise, when we got back to the room there were flower petals all over the bed with the word "Congratulations" on the bed in white petals. Then there was candles set up around the bath which was already filled with hot water and flower petals. VERY ROMANTIC and he did it all himself!

The staff in general were very nice except for a hostess at one of the morning buffet's, who was very rude when I requested an open, clean table along the balcony so we could see the beach and a server at Valentino's who gave me a hard time about everything I asked for. At the main pool, bartender Basil was amazing. If you do go here (which you should!) ask the pool bar for a basil special. Amazing drink! Some people said drinks were watered down, they aren't! The rum is amazing and they use plenty! Red Stripe beer is delicious! The food was amazing! We loved it! The Sushi bar was delicious as was the Sake drink they have there! Sadly we didn't go here until the day before we left otherwise we would have come here more often!!!

Only negatives here were the beach is very small, but the pool is great. So if you are okay hanging out by the pool and the bar instead of on the beach, you have nothing to worry about! The other negative is that if you need to go down to the ocean side of the resort (where the beach is and most dinner restaurants).

All in all, go here and enjoy the nice weather, nice people, great culture and of course, RUM!

Room Tip: Honeymoon bougainvillea hideaway is a cheap butler room with private plunge pool, free wifi and free...

Recently visited Sandals Grande Riviera in Ocho Rios from January 6-12th, 2014. We were visiting for a wedding and went a few days early to get in some R&R. This was my 3rd sandals to visit (St Lucia and Negril).

Overall, it was a very pleasant trip. There were not many negatives to our experience.

Upon arrival we were taken to the Sandals lounge in the MoBay airport. We were slightly disappointed in that there were no snacks and only beer and soda were the only beverage options. Saw some people with champagne, but they had to ask for it and the employees were not easy to track down. It was nice to sip on some beer after a long day of travel. The luggage handlers take care of you bags. Be prepared to tip as they will remind you very incessantly that they are not Sandals employees. Have smaller bills handy before you get there. Before getting on the bus, do yourself a favor and get a drink or two for the road from the bar just outside the airport. The driver stopped halfway at a local bar to allow us to get a drink but we were all just ready to get there so everyone declined and we kept going.

Transfer to the resort was long (about an hour and a half) but somewhat enjoyable. Our driver did a good job of giving neat facts and bits of information while interacting with the guests. Be prepared to tip the driver as well.

Check in went smoothly, if not a bit slow. By this point everyone was starving and wanted nothing more than to eat. We were taken to the concierge lounge where we filled out necessary paperwork. Looked like snacks were available but were never offered - nor were drinks. But no issues with luggage and our rooms were available upon arrival. It's just slightly annoying that you need to go through the concierge process.

Our room was very basic but nice and clean. We were in the Riviera Cottages just behind the Riviera building. A few minor annoyances - we did not have a bottle opener or corkscrew, our safe battery was dying so you had to go through the process of resetting the code each time you wanted to lock it, the hot water did not last terribly long ( plenty for two separate showers though, but during a longer shower it is noticeable), and it was very loud ( you could hear everybody outside of your room and workers seemed to start their groundskeeping very early). Everything was very clean and our room was visited multiple times a day by a cleaning person. Be aware the bathroom lights are set to motion sensors in the bedroom so any extended time spent in the shower (wink wink) may get a bit dark :)

Many reviewers on here expressed an annoyance with how far away the butler's villas are from the main part of the resort. We never found this to be an issue. For one, there is plenty to do on that side of the resort and two, the shuttle back and forth was very quick and easy to catch.

Bayside breakfast buffet - basic buffet. Good not great. Fresh fruit and omelet bar.

Valentinos - not our favorite. Too fancy for what you get. Octopus salad was more of an amuse (single bite). The lamb that wasn't extremely fatty was very good, but another small portion. Overall, just decent with small portion sizes.

Soy Sushi - again, TINY portions. We ordered five items each: miso soup, salad, two rolls, and nigiri. The soups did not come (waitress was struggling), and the rolls and nigiri were not enough to be considered a meal. The food we had was very good, but we ended up leaving and going to a different restaurant afterwards because we were still starving.

Neptunes - good food, right on the beach, nice view. The special of the night was a lobster tail that was delicious.

Manor House - Caribbean food. The mango glazed short rib was very good. No plantains which was a disappointment. Overall a very good meal.

Reef Terrace - by far our favorite. Both the tenderloin and the marlin were fantastic.

We split our days between the main house pool and the ochi beach area. Both equally nice. The pool was nice as it offered easy access to drinks and activities by the staff. The beach offered you the view with easy enough access to the ochi pool bar.

Evenings were mostly spent at Jamies sports bar. This is where most people ended up after the evening's festivities concluded. Good vibe, DJ, beachfront.

Enjoyed the resort fesivities in the evening. The reggae fest was excellent.

We went on the Dunn's River Falls Catamaran Cruise. We thoroughly enjoyed it. You go out on the catamaran to a snorkel spot where you are able to swim around a reef for about 45 minutes. Not the greatest snorkeling but it was enjoyable. Then you get back on the boat and go to the mouth of the falls. Here you get in groups and hike up the falls in human chains. I do have to say I did not expect much from the pictures online, but I was very impressed with the falls. Beautiful falls with naturally chilled water and they seem to just keep going and going. When you get to what you think is the top - it just keeps going. Slightly annoyed with how crowded it was, but whatever...I'm a tourist too. Then you get back on the boat and sail back to the resort. On the way back they have a stocked bar, beer, and rum punch with small bites to eat. The ride back saw rough seas which made for a very fun, stomach churning (in a good way) ride. Pulling up to port the boat staff made sure it was a dance party to ensure everyone at the resort saw what a good time we were having. And to be fair, it was a very good time (and I'm not a dancer)

Overall, very pleasant experience. We never ran across an employee who wasn't looking to have a good time. The "playmakers" even got a soccer team together to play our group in a friendly game.

The things that kept me from giving it a better score would be the some of the food and some annoyances with our room mentioned above.

This was our 4th trip to a Sandals property and once again experienced a first class holiday. The Grande Riviera is actually 2 resorts, Riviera Seaside which is directly on the beach and the Great House which is on the other side of the road and is predominately Butler service villas. This is also where the main Sandals pool is located however there are 2 pools as well, located on the beachside as well. Although there are 2 small beach areas, if you like to take long walks on the beach, I would suggest you look at Sandals Emerald Bay.
There are numerous restaurants to choose from in both locations and shuttle buses run every 5 minutes all day long. It takes less than 5 minutes to get from one side to the other.
This is a very lush property and like all Sandals properties is very well mainta

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view, you need to book a suite in the Riviera Seaside building. If you choose B...

Beware of the baggage handlers at MBJ. They will take anything of value. They turned my bag upside down looking an decided they needed my wife's watch and 2 gold pendants/neclaces more than she did. Also took a half-filled bottle of Polo cologne from me. This pretty much soured the trip and my desire to return to Jamaica. That being said, the resort was nice, the staff so-so with a few exceptions. The food was ok. I wish I could tell others to visit this resort, but I think the resort owners take advantage of the people of Jamaica for cheap labor and bigger profits.

Jermaine in Kimono best evening server. Made sure we always had topped up refreshments. Excellent entertainer at the end. Sang with Steve and had the entire table singing and laughing. Helped us secure our pre ordered deep fried ice cream from Soy before the restaurant closed. Instead of us going over to pick dessert up he brought it over to us at the Kimonos hibachi table.

Hank also deserves special mention, though we saw him more at breakfast, than dinner! Personal service and a great sense of humour!

Nadine and Simone are wonderful butlers. Took care of our needs and we always had fun with the ladies. Enjoyed the personal touches they had. The towel animals and hand written notes. Drawing a romantic bubble bath with chilled champagne without being asked. Ensuring our bar had the special requests such as specific wines, cheese and fruit plates and extra water and diet cokes stocked. Making our reservations and escorting us to our dinner reservations.

We had mentioned to Patrick (food and beverage manager) last year that the rice pudding at Kimonos needed to be revamped. This visit the rice pudding was delicious. He listened to our suggestion and improved the dessert. Fitzroy is just as attentive to our comments.

Ricardo in the Polo lounge... Best bartender. We're not heavy drinkers, so a bartender that recognizes us and knows our drinks is a rare occasion. A charming gentleman indeed.

Speaking of Ricardos... Ricardo the bellman remembered us from a year ago! Are our bags that heavy? Are we that annoying that we'd stand out in a Bellman’s mind? I think he just really pays attention to the guests. A surprising welcome upon our return.

Camille and Jennifer in Spa. Camille can give the strongest and best sports massage I’ve ever had! Great with pedicures and facials as well. Jennifer has the magic touch for massage and facial.

Dwayne, the Omlette King at Sabrina’s in the Great House made fantastic egg-white omlettes every morning without a wait. Fast service and delicious! Egg white omlettes are "No problem, mon!"

Wade and his dive crew have turned this PADI shop into the friendliest and most welcoming group that I've ever dived with. They certified a lot of new divers during our stay, and took great care of a friend who was nervous after not diving for 12 years. Had a great time underwater!

We had a great chat with Brian Roper the General Manager… incredible how involved he is with every detail of the operation! He is the final interview for all 970 employees at the resort… mention any employee and he knows where they’re working, and who with. Stunning.
