“Had A Blast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

Travelled to Sandals Grande Riviera as a group of 12 "The Tartan Clan" March 22-31, our trip didn't start out too well as we had a 3 hour delay in Toronto due to mechanical problems with the aircraft. Once this was all sorted we were off, flying West Jet the flight was fine, breezed through customs and then off to the Sandals lounge, less than 10 minutes later the 12 of us boarded a small bus for the journey to Ocho Rios.

Once we arrived at Sandals we were greeted, registered and then off to our rooms, although it was a little difficult at first trying to seat 12 people for meals things went very smoothly after we contacted Ingrid. The service at all of the restaurants was very good as were the meals. If you go onto the Sandals facebook page you will see the Operations Manager Radu coming out of the water with a tray after serving our group out on the floating raft, now that is customer service.

We golfed 3 times (2 golfed 4 times) with caddies Mark and Yellow, be sure to ask for these two as they are very good caddies. Also if you wish to get to and from the course ahead of the shuttle you can contact Homa the cabby caddie who will get you to and from the course ahead of the shuttle for a very reasonable price.

Special shout out to Natallia who kept us entertained all week, and Brandon who looked after us every morning for breakfast. We also had a blast with Oliver in Miss Ethyl's piano bar.

Overall very good vacation.

Room Tip: Stayed in Villa 2061 on the Riviera side, great location close to everything

We just returned from this resort and found the property to be beautiful (and huge!) and the service excellent. We found that there were a lot of staff there to assist with anything you needed and everyone was always very friendly. We had a hillside butler suite with a semi private pool. We would highly recommend both Charlette and Anna for not only their excellent service as butlers but also for their warm and friendly personalities. One feature we found nice with the butler service was that they provided a cell phone to contact your butlers from anywhere if you required anything. The hillside of the resort has more private rooms and it was nice to enjoy the quiet of our own pool. The beach side is more lively with lots of music. We loved both valentino's and the reef restaurants but the food was very good everywhere except kimonos. We also booked a candlelit dinner on the beach which was excellent. We spent a lot of time on the beach side of the resort and found the shuttle service to be very good. We never waited for more than a few minutes and the jitney service on the hillside made the rooms very convenient to get to. Overall we really this resort.

Room Tip: Beach side is noisier but is where a lot of the restaurants and entertainment is located. The hills...

We travelled to the Sandals Grante Riviera Beach & Villa Golf Resort from March 21 - 28th. Our trip was a little unique as we were travelling with 3 other couples. We stayed in the Riviera Honeymoon Bougainvillea Hideaway Butler Suite. What made this trip amazing was that all 4 couples were in the same Villa, we shared many many laughs, late nights swims, champagne and good music by the pool - every day, late afternoon after a day by the pool/beach there was always champagne chilling in ice buckets, cold bottled red stripe beer in the coolers and pizza to snack on. .

While each couple were allocated their own butlers they soon realized they inherited a group of 8 - they were so accomodating to everyone. Sandals is very lucky to have Rochester, Stanford, Richardo, Joseph, Ladana and Tizane on staff. They were always professional, great humor and always greeted us with a smile either first thing in the morning or late at night - they truly made our vacation. Our team would bring us breakfast by the pool which always included champagne and orange juice. They booked our reservations (8 people is never easy - but they always made it work); they picked us up every evening and escorted all of us to dinner and booked golf for the boys. Our team always made sure that all rooms, were neat and tidy at all times, the fridge was always stocked with the right types of liquor (Baileys, Champagne, Peach Scnapps, lots of beer for the boys and wine for the ladies), fruit/cheese/desert plates, they had the candles lit in our rooms, flowers on the bed and around the bath and bubbles in the bath tub - far to many special extra touches to list. They'll also give you a private cell phone to reach them for anything. The butlers work so hard and have up to 9 rooms at a time (the resort was 100% booked the week we went) so generous tips are always appreciated.

Food and drinks were available at all times. I would suggest trying a different restaurant every night. Our favorites would be Kimonos (hoepfully you will get Tex as your chef and Carlando as your waiter) a special shout out to Tex and Carlando - you put on a great show, amazing service -you made our evening; Valentinos (white glove service and amazing food) and Bayside (our butlers and the staff went out of their way to make a very special evening).

The only few negatives would be - as the resort is so large - we spent most days at the Grande pool and not at the beach club - even though the shuttles were very regular, it was easier (or maybe we were getting lazier by the day) to stay by the pool. Another suggestion would be that the management should spend more time circulating with guests - during our evening a Kimonos the manager and assistant manager held a meeting at the front entrance for over an hour - when we went to give them our compliments to the chef (Tex) and waiter (Carlando) we had to interupt their ongoing discussion -we also had the same experience when we asked to speak to the head of the bulter team again to give our compliments - they never bothered to come see us - but we were able to give our compliments to the General Manager and the Operations Manager.

Overall - we would highly recommed this resort - and yes go for the bulter service. This is our 4 trip to a Sandals resort and will definitely be back. A special thank you again to Standford, Rochester, Joseph, Richardo, Ladana, Tizane, Carlando and Raquel (our little spitfire - playmaker) who actually got us out of our beach chairs - Sandals is lucky to have each and every one of you as part of their team.

Lucky 8 from Canada

My wife booked a vacation tp our favorite all inclusive resort in Ochi (Ocho Rios) Jamaica ad a birthday gift for me. It had been 5 years since we last stepped through the Riviera Building and sighed at the blue ocean lapping at beach sand. The renovations complete (adding Kimonos and Soy- Sushi bar), we were welcomed to the Concierge desk. We met Kerian, Holly, Shanie and Bertoni....all falling over themselves to help make our stay more pleasant. The room was exquisite. The view breath taking. The food at the Sundowner grille amazing as ever. The jerk chicken and the made to order hamburgers. Yummy!! The beach party in the evening was galant and better than we remembered, the food, not so much. Morning brought the realization that Hurricane Sandy had done a lot if damage to the each in front of the resort and hat we had picked the wrong time for a quiet vacation. Seems all of Canada had descended on the property. Kimonos meal left much to be desired, we were seated on e wrong table.....seems Tex is the only chef who can make bland food more entertaining. Valentino's was awesome as we remembered, except no creme bruele....we noticed a disturbing trend of a priced wine list added to each restaurants menu.....wait, i thought this was an all-inclusive???? The kicker came when we got our invite for the returning guests dinner....please wear all white....ummm...errrr, an excuse for the Mrs to go shopping for an overpriced white dress at the gift shop. Thanks a lot!!! Could have told us in the 15 page pamphlet we got with the confirmation. Then came the dinner itself, after the trillion intros and the Gen.Manager hitting on each of the young interns we were served a slab of meat, with some steamed veggies and potatoes.....wow, i got better variety at the grille at 3:00 am. Where was the choice if i did not want to eat steak? For dessert, lets walk over to the chocolate buffet that the whole resort was participating in....feel Special yet???? The peace de resistance.....selling , yes selling the pics clicked on arrival at the dinner for $15. I mean come on, you're giving away T shirts, bottles of rum and spa credits and...... Selling pics to returning guests????? Tacky!!!!!!

Why does the resort keep running out of mint to make me a Mojito? Who is stealing all the mint?

These were not just lapses in hospitality that we saw, but was commented on by other guests we befriended. We rented a cabana for the day, but the concierge forgot to put it in, we had to remind housekeeping at our room had not been cleaned till 2:00 pm. We usually got upgrades as returning guests and Sandals Select Members...we got nothing. Except warm smiles and No Problem.

Sandals In Ochi has a lot of vacation memories for me attached to it. Seeing it always makes me smile and think of warm breezes and sun soaked beaches. Seems we might need to start to look elsewhere to make those memories.

Room Tip: Dint travel during peak season here, try July and August when its still warm, and less packed.

We just returned from our first ever trip outside the States, and got exactly what we were hoping for - paradise! We went to celebrate our 20th anniversary, and were absolutely blown away! It was everything we'd dreamed. We reserved the resorts top room, the Ocean's Edge Riviera Honeymoon Beachfront One Bedroom Butler Suite - HP1, and while the top price, still felt it was a bargain after staying for the week. After talking with others there, we know we made the best choice. There isn't enough space to tell all the great experiences, but suffice it to say, we were spoiled rotten.

Our two butlers made our trip amazing. Stanford and Joseph brought us breakfast on our patio each morning, tidied our room, booked all our dining, took care of crazy special requests, made sure we were always where we needed to be when we needed to be there, and became like family during our stay! Their genuine enjoyment of their jobs was evident, and we couldn't have asked for better hosts! Not sure when we'll go back, we don't do big trips like this very often, but if we do, we will hope to get the same team to be sure!

While there, we recommend getting the top end of everything, for instance, the Ultimate Dolphin Swim (take an extra 100 bucks with you...you'll want it for the DVD and hundreds of pictures on disc that they'll take - and its a deal) and the Honeymoon Horseback Ride - private guide, neat snack on the beach, the photo disk included, and riding in the ocean.

The only negative I'd guess we could say is the food at Kelly's dockside...it wasn't great, though the appetizer platter was really good. The ambience was great, but food, not so much. Everywhere else though was really good, with a lot of unique offerings. With the exception of Kimono's (where you'll have trouble finishing!), the portions are smaller than you're probably used to, so don't hesitate to order multiple entries - just remember to order them on separate plates or they'll all be even smaller! Learned that the hard way!

The toughest vacation we've ever had to leave, and one we will never, ever forget. We lived the dream for a week and it was worth every penny - once again in great part to our amazing butler team of Stanford and Joseph...a better pair you'll be tough to find!

Room Tip: Regardless of what you may read elsewhere, unless you've been there before and really know your...

We travelled to Sandals Grande Riviera from March 9-16 2013. This was our 6th trip to a Sandals or Beaches resort and went with mixed expectations based on our past travel experiences (all good) and reviews on here (some bad).
The Arrival: We arrived 45 minutes early! YAY!! We only waited about 30 minutes through customs and immigration and then we were off to the Sandals lounge where we filled our Bubba Kegs with beer and had a quick sandwich. Then we were off to the bus (about 10 minutes). There were four couples on the bus and we chose not to stop on the way to the resort. We arrived in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. I fell asleep on the bus ride (we had been to Ocho last year). Our driver pointed out some interesting sights on the way to the resort to pass the time.

Check in: We stayed on the Beach side and the entrance is nothing spectacular but is clean, and gives you that resort/beach feeling. Having stayed in concierge before, this check-in was a little lack-lustre. Pretty much, sign the papers and off you go. We did get some champagne and a cool towel upon our arrival.

Room: We booked a Bamboo Grove room and requested to NOT be on the ground floor. Well sure enough upon our arrival we were on the ground floor – the closest to the entrance for the building. I thought that it would be VERY noisy. The room was nice but quite small. We walked around the resort for a while and then decided to ask if there was an upper floor room for us. Within 20 minutes they had us on the second floor, in a much bigger room – I was very happy here.

The Beach: There is very little beach to walk here but what they do have is kept extremely clean. The Ochi Beach club is a great place because it has the beach with great loungers and a pool with a swim-up bar. The bathrooms are right around the corner and Neptunes to eat lunch is right there as well. There are shuffleboard, bocce and a volleyball court at the Beach club too. This is where we spent most of our days and would probably do the same if we were to go back.

The Beach Side: The beach side is amazing. There are so many different little spots for you to hang out – many hot tubs, little alcoves, hammocks, bars, beach areas etc. I think that this part of the resort really feels like you are in the Caribbean. On this side you will find the Sundowner bar which is very nice at night – it looks out to the ocean and has gas firepits. The bartenders here are great too. This side also houses the amphitheatre, where there is nightly entertainment (we really enjoyed the reggae night with Peter Lloyd).

The Manor Side: We frequented the Manor side of the resort as well. The main pool here is very large with a big hot tub. There is a rock climbing wall here too (which we tried – it’s much harder than it looks). This side feels more like a hotel rather than a resort but the staff is just as nice and it is very well kept. There are white tents at this side of the resort where they held the returning guests dinner and the “beach” party because it was windy down by the beach.

The Food: We found the food very good. We ate at most of the restaurants with our favourites being Sabrina’s (great anti-pasto bar) and stuffed lobster and Valentino’s (there was a 45 minute wait here). We also ate at The Reef Terrace, Soy (for appetizers), The Bayside, the beach party (buffet – but VERY good), the SSG dinner. All the food was very tasty and we thought the portion sizes were enough but if you don’t – just ask for another one – no problem!

Activities: We went snorkelling, did some paddleboards, played outdoor games and caught many night shows. There is a lot to do if you choose, or you can do nothing (also a favourite of mine!)

Overall: We loved this resort and would definitely go again. There were some people that made our time there extra special and fun. A thanks goes out to TYRONE at the Soon Come Back desk – he was awesome. We sat with him at the SSG dinner and made sure to catch up with him everyday after that. Erroll at the Sundowner bar mixes great drinks and is a great guy to talk to. We had a great time and can’t wait to go back. The drivers from the beach side to the manor side are great too and we NEVER had to wait longer than 3 minutes for a shuttle to come.

Tips: One day a Cruise ship came into port and there were some rowdy guests at the resort – this kind of turned us off a little but they were gone by dinner, so no harm done there. If you are staying on the Manor side, looking onto the tennis courts can be very noisy as this is where the butler golf carts are parked and they are beeping constantly to back up. Don’t miss the chocolate buffet on Wednesday night – YUMMY – it was really the only dessert I ate all week – besides all the fruity drinks and it was well worth it.

Have fun at this resort and don’t believe the bad reviews. If you are relaxed, you’ll have a great time.

Room Tip: The Bamboo Grove is close to everything on the Seaside but very quiet both night and day

We stayed in a Bougainvillea Hideaway Butler Suite for 7 nights and paid $3260 with a $270 spa credit. The beachside rooms were cheaper but unless you’re a spring break college student you'll be more comfortable in a butler suite. The views, the landscaping, everything is amazing! Transportation to and from the beach side is super easy thus shouldn't be a factor in your decision.

Our butlers were Andrew and Ray and they were amazing. They had the perfect blend of friendliness, humor and professionalism. You should rely on your butlers to escort you to dinners as you'll get the best tables with no waiting. You can use them for anything from unpacking/packing to arranging excursions. These are also the guys that make sure your room is stocked with the right types of liquor and fruit/cheese/desert plates. They'll also give you a private cell phone to reach them for anything. The butlers by the way are the only Sandals employees you should tip. I tipped them $100 each. Keep in mind the minimum wage in Jamaica is $70/week and the butlers take care of 4 couples minimum at a time.

The food and drinks are perfect and plentiful. If you want authentic jerked chicken then you'll need to see Creda down at the beachside Bistro grill. She makes her special jerk sauce and if you give her a smile and a pleasant please you can get extra sauce. What a sweet woman.

We had sushi at Soy's 6 of the 7 nights as our pre-dinner dinner. Yea, I know...we made pigs of ourselves. Try the fried ice cream there.

I would suggest trying a different restaurant every night. Oh, Kelly's Dockside is an extra charge unless you're staying in a butler suite. Dining there free is just one more of the many perks you get from staying at a butler suite.

The first day you should explore the property and go to the 10:00am orientation at the beachside lobby. We found several cool things that not too many people know about. For example you can use the spa's sauna, steam room and plunge pool as often as you like free of charge. China Doll's is open for breakfast and you can get fillet mignon and fruit smoothies. Try the Blue Mountain espresso rather than coffee americano. It's a nice change. There's also a tennis pro on staff.

I've stayed at many upscale hotels including two Ritz Carlton's and I must say that the staff and facilities at Sandals Grande Rivera are as good if not better that anything I've found. We tried to find negatives about this place and could only come up with the reverse alarms on the golf carts the staff use being too loud. They sound just like a smoke alarm going off. Trying to sleep in past 8:00am is tough if one of these carts backs up near your window.

The second and biggest con is the airline that Sandals chooses for you. I would highly recommend that you make flight arrangements yourself and spend the money on a direct flight or a better airline. Whatever you do, DON'T LET SANDLALS BOOK YOU ON SPIRIT AIRLINE!!! You have been warned. They are the ghetto of the airline industry. Everything short of crashing that could go wrong did go wrong. On top of that the employees were awful, especially Ricardo at Ft. Lauderdale Spirit gate. We witnessed him extort $100 from a kid with a FAA certified 45 linear inch personal bag that was specifically designed to fit under the seat. When the passenger placed the bag into the size measuring rack at the gate, the soft leather handle stuck up past the top of the rack about half an inch. The bag itself fit perfectly as it was designed. When the kid pushed the handle down it fit but Ricardo didn't allow the kid to hold down the handle thus charged him $100 for an oversized personal item. To make it worse Ricardo threatened to have the kid arrested if he argued about it as he would have been interfering with a flight crew. I could go on about $250 one bag fee and the 4 hour delay going and the canceled flight on the way back but I'll just leave it at "YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ABOUT FLYING SPIRIT".

All in all I would highly recommend this resort to couples that want a romantic vacation to reconnect with the one you love. Oh, one more tip....try to bring candles and an iPod with romantic music as there is a bedside iPod docking station.

Room Tip: Without a doubt go for the butler suites on the hillside rather than the beachside rooms. That is un...
