It really was bliss. We just returned. I had a lot of reservations about going to Jamaica. I hadn't heard complimentary things from friends. Lots of people said it was a nasty place filled with nasty people, that they wouldn't go back if they were offered a trip free. (Yikes!)
However, I kept hearing great things about this hotel. I needed a place that would be warm and easy to reach. I wanted a beautiful beach. I wanted a place that had good food so we wouldn't have to bounce around at night searching for restaurants. I wanted gracious reliable service.
I found it all at this hotel. It was a joy.
It's not for anyone who needs to be entertained. It's not for kids under 12 (we left our little ones at home.) It's a place to kick back and relax and forget about the world for awhile. There are no TVs (hooray!) in the rooms or anywhere else that I could see. There are no tennis courts etc. The work out room is not terribly inviting.
We didn't care. We swam, kayacked, slept, and read all the books that'd been piling up by our bed.
It was wonderful. The staff was so gracious! The beach is lovely, nestled in a shallow cove, with thick, soft sand and a sprinkling of thatched huts beneath which are tables and lounges, complete with cushioned matts on top. You can kayack, sail, or simply drift on one of the many rafts that are scattered about. A cooler with water sits with cold glasses by the bar. And someone is always gently asking if you need anything. It's truly peaceful, quiet, with just the lapping water and an occasional interloper on a jet ski from a neighboring resort.
Our room was beautiful. The best part was the large terrace on which we ate breakfast every morning, often with a visiting cat. We said next time (this is being a bit picky) we'd get something farther from the road. At night on the weekends we could hear motor bikes going by. But it wasn't terrible, and we'e hyper sensitive because our main residence is on a very quiet street. The view of the ocean, gardens and grounds from our room was spectacular.
We took the meal plan for breakfast and dinner. There was entertainment, steel bands, every night. We dine out quite a bit and really enjoyed the food. It wasn't the best we'd ever had. Some dishes were a lot better than others. But nothing was bad. All we ate was good enough and they varied the menu enough to leave us feeling quite content; and thrilled when it came to the desserts!
The hotel is 90 minutes from the airport. To me that was the worst part. But that's because I get car sick. And, still, all things considered, that was a minor nuisance. The hotel really was worth it for the right folks - those who love the beach and the sea, great, gracious service, and fine food. It's for those who really want to get away and just relax. The books left behind in the reading/game room were among the most literary I've seen at a beach resort, which says a lot about the visitors, I think.
