Well, what is there to say. This was our second time to The Inn in two years. Last time for our friend's wedding, this time for our honeymoon.
This place is by far the best escape I've seen. I would recommend it to any one, no matter how wealthy they may be. The place is so quaint, that some of the staff and management actually remembered us from the previous year. You want to party and make noise? Go somewhere else. This is a place to do little or nothing and be peaceful. Only 45 rooms in the whole place says it all.
Anyway, on with the review (second).
Without doubt I recommend the beach front suites. There is only a knee high ballastered railing separating you from the sand. You cannot beat it. Get hot on the beach? 10 steps and your on your veranda to grab a beer out of the fridge that you so smartly stocked with red strip on your way from the airport, hint, hint. As seen in all of the reviews, the rooms are kept perfectly clean and are visited by the staff twice per day- one to clean, one for turn down service. I recommend 47 or 46, which are just about at the end of the wing for even more privacy
Tip. If you are down on that wing (or anywhere, I would think), open up your front door and leave it open, along with the door to the veranda- the breeze will flow through your room and onto the veranda in a most wonderful fashion. We even left it open when we were on the beach, we felt that safe at all times, but I leave that to you. I mean, everything of value fits into the room safe so please, take my wet bathing suit if you want it! Also, keep your eyes on the open sea during the night. During summer, almost nightly lighting shows. Wow.
Veranda. The best thing I have ever seen. Huge open aired room connected to the living quarters by wonderful shutters (no glass windows) that open up, a wonderful white slip covered sofa and two lounge chairs, a desk, a fridge, a small tub of water to wash your feet when you come back from the beach, a small towel rack, and a little eating table and chairs. The most wonderful part of the room for sure. Go and you'll understand.
Food. Hum, five course meals anyone, with a menu that changes daily and is wonderfully presented on thick parchment type paper in script writing that are made each day (they are dated)? The only downfall is that is all you can order- five courses. Of course there are selections for each course, but if your not too hungry that night, you are out of luck if you JUST want an entree or salad. Well, you can just have that, but you still pay full price. I'm not a big eater but my wife is, so we frequently ordered dinner for one and split it. It was pleanty of food for both. Same for breakfast. We particularly liked eating on our veranda and as the other review state, china, silver and white linens everytime. But, you can eat in shorts and no shirt if you want. The restaurant is pants and collared shirt for men. You still need to go up and eat there at least once, and when there be sure to have a drink with Mary (manager) and Terri (assistant manager), as they are wonderful. Also, if you are a snacker, beware. There are times in the day, i.e. between meals, where there is no food available. So, watch those naps to not oversleep lunch or you will be waiting for dinner before you eat. Finally, lunch was great. I really do not recall them actually having lunch service last year, only afternoon tea and crumpets (english owners). Anyway, everything on that menu was great and we had it every day.
Eating out. Well, two years, and haven't gone to a restaurant out of the hotel yet. I hear there are good ones, but why leave this wonderful place with a changing dinner menu everyday? We are big "jerk chicken" fans, and we did go to the local jerk shack aka "the ranch" which is right down the street and picked us some wonderful chicken, rice and beans which we had for lunch on the beach. Highly recommended and dirt cheap.
The hotel had a beach bbq w/bonfire one day. Don't know if that is a weekly thing or not, but if it is happening when you are there, do it. Great food served buffet style, music and drinks right on the beach. You have to pay for it, but they have a meet the staff for appetizers and drinks event before that which was free.
There really is a tacit agreement between (most) guest and between guests and the staff (likley because of the huge number of repeat vistitors): everyone is quite and will interact with you if you want or will simply leave you alone. Try and keep it that way. Loud and lame are not appreciated and very hard to find at this place, but there was a few near us for two days. But, you dull the pain with red stripe, and go on doing nothing. We met some folks who were wonderful and had just purchased a time share at the end of the beach (new thing, but fear not, it is only like 4 beautiful bungaolos overlooking the beach). We bbq on their deck one night and cooked a regular dinned another night. Very wonderful people and good memories.
Tours. Once you get here, you won't want to leave. Trust me. But if you must (and you should) go anywhere, go to Dunns River Falls, a complete tourist trap. However, you must go by boat which is parked right off the beach. Ask Gary (boat mon) to take you. He will set you up bigtime. He knows when to go to avoid the crowds and gets you a private guide to take care of you. No buses, no crowds just you and a truly wonderful spot. Also go to "laughing waters", another great place. You can do both in a couple of hours and be back on the beach in no time, having actually done something so people don't think you are crazy. It is a tourist trap, but doing it this way makes this must see attraction entirely wonderful.
Drinks. What else can be said about free planter's punch delivered to you beach lounge every morning at 11:30 a.m. sharp everyday other than wonderful? You don't order it, they just bring it to you. You go, Patrice!
Word to the wise. If you drink, have your driver stop on the way in from the airport and pick up some booze. Beers in the fridge and a bottle of your favorite in your room is very nice. Drinks at the Inn are expensive and you drink a lot of them because of the heat. And the bar closes at 11p.m. Run out of booze? have a driver take you to town to the market to restock.
Staff. Best in the business. Friendly, helpful, funny, etc. Any and every request is taken with the utmost seriousness and pretty much is accomodated. Mary is a most wonderful host. Terri is, da bomb. The owner is wonderfully nice, although I cannot remember his name at this moment. Patrice is also the bomb, and was very prompt about those planter punches in the morning. Gary the boat man rocks (as does his first mate, another name that escapes me at this time). The "beach man", another treasure (been there for decades). Rupert and Teddy- funny, warm and make great drinks. Teddy's been there since time began (I think) and he has stories-o-pleanty to tell. Andrew our driver- will do anything for you.
Finally, either fly to Ochos from Montego Bay or without question use the hotel's private car deal. It's like a $100 buck but well worth it. Its just you and whoever you are with, red strip and waters awaiting, on time, nice car, air conditioning, etc. Do it.
Well, I thank you all for allowing me to relive my honeymoon. Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have.
