Island Grill is classed as a fast food restaurant, but it offers more nutritious options than the usual burgers, fried chicken and fries and is reasonably priced compared to Burger King or KFC.
On offer are more substantial meals and the delicious choices include Jamaican favourites such as, ‘brown stew fish or chicken’ (cooked down in gravy), escovitched fish (fried fish, served with vinegar, sliced onion and hot pepper), jerk chicken and jerk roast fish, all of which are served with either plain boiled rice, pumpkin rice, or rice and peas, or you can have festival (sweet fried dumplings) or fries, side orders include amongst other things, fried plantain. They also offer hot soups and cold subs with for example, chicken and salad inside. They also offer unlimited refills of soda once you buy the cup, not so health conscious if you guzzle, but also means you can just order a smaller size cup and refill as necessary. It is also clean and has pleasant seating areas, try the upstairs balcony in Ocho Rios to people watch and eat out of the icy A.C.(accessed from outside) inside, the rest rooms had the necessary amenities.
I do eat at island grill and enjoy the food, (fried and brown stew fish needs to be bigger, as it is nice and you could eat it twice!), but if you want truly authentic Jamaican fare you should try one of the Jamaican owned (non chain) restaurants or street sellers, where you see the locals frequenting instead, order the same dish and taste the difference! You can get a large (feeds 2 adults for lunch) 'box meal' from these vendors for as little as JA$300 - JA$350
